Starbucks is peddling the worst coffee at the highest prices according to a survey of the big three coffee houses on Britain's high streets.
A report published today calculates that choosing the world’s largest coffee chain instead of an independent shop for your cappuccino three mornings a week will cost you £126 a year.
The Which? Magazine survey did not stop at lamenting the cost of a Starbucks, it also placed the global brand at the bottom of its taste test. It concluded that when it came to too much water in an Americano and a surfeit of froth on a cappuccino, “Starbucks was the worst offender”.
Despite a difficult year in which revenue fell for the first time since 1992, Starbucks is still by far the biggest coffee chain on the planet with more than 15,000 stores in 44 countries.
Caffe Nero came top of the survey with the cheapest coffee and the highest score for taste. The independent UK chain proved cheaper than Starbucks and Costa for a cappuccino and a pastry. Despite its lower prices, Nero also used twice as much coffee as standard in its regular and large drinks. Costa and Starbucks used a single shot of espresso and more water as opposed to the double shot in Nero coffees.
The report also examined the calorie content of coffees across the big three. The full range of drinks ran from 17 calories in a black Americano to a white chocolate mocha with whip and whole milk from Starbuck that came in at 628 calories – more than a quarter of recommended daily calorie intake.
The sandwiches available in the coffee shops also came under scrutiny, with several found to contain more calories, fat and salt than a McDonald’s Big Mac.
Four sandwiches at Starbucks and four at Costa exceeded the 495 calories in a Big Mac. Fat content in four Costa sandwiches, five from Starbucks and one from Caffe Nero was higher than the burger and 32 sandwiches from the three shops had more salt than a Big Mac.

I <3 Costa. Starbucks isn't a scratch on the almighty C. I think hough it's part attatchment as well because I've loved them since I was 14 and I used to hang out in the one in town whilst waiting for ballet or my bus writing or reading. Starbcusk for coffee coffee though, sucks!

I love Starbucks, actually their cakes, pastries and paninis are simply the best for me - way better than Costa - awful dry fare. I also like their coffee. My only criticism would be the staff in some of the stores, who don't clean up very quickly.

I agree Starbucks make the worst and yet most expensive coffee. They also have the worst always refrigerated and never fresh tasting pastries.Another example of "The emperor has no clothes."

Like everything in life a lot of this is down to personal taste. What appeals to one will not appeal to another, having said that the cofee chains must be doing something right or they wouldn't be proliferating at such a rate.

I drink my coffee black so taste really is important to me. Starbucks tastes as if it has milk in, even if I ask for it in a paper cup. It is also very bitter. The best coffee I have tasted in a long while is at Baristas in Bristol. Great coffee and friendly staff.
Liz Read, Bristol,
i've never been a coffee lover ,, however while visiting india i sampled the local coffee in puntaparthi -it is delicious and only 40 rupees. ---70 rupees =£1.00 so very good value.
why then why can't others supply good coffee all the time .

I've been a regular at Nero for a while now. It's coffee is far superior, the taste is more intense, and they always use semi-skimmed milk, and they give you a royality card! Viva Nero i say, Starbucks are a bit of a Moby Dick...
Tom, London,
it is always nice to go from time to time in starbuck for a coffee
but not as daily thing tho
it is nice to chill there with a cup and a paper
it all depends which coffee you choose as well they do a lovely skinny
