Two killed in helicopter crash
Two people were killed yesterday when a helicopter crashed in woods in the
grounds of a luxury hotel in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. The helicopter was
said to have come down shortly after taking off from the Rudding Park hotel
at about 4pm. The victims, a middle-aged man and woman, were thought to be
from the West Yorkshire area, but had not been formally identified last
night.
Palestinian hijacker dies at 81
The Palestinian terrorist who pioneered airline hijacking died yesterday aged
81. George Habash, who led the PLO’s second-largest faction, had a heart
attack in Jordan. Habash and his group gained notoriety for the hijackings
in 1970 of four western airliners and the seizure of an Air France flight to
Entebbe, Uganda. Four civilians died during a rescue by Israeli
paratroopers.
Teen murdered
A teenager died in hospital yesterday after being attacked in a park in west
London, left. Fuad Buraleh, 19, from Hayes, was found in west Ealing early
yesterday. He is thought to have been hit with a blunt instrument after
getting off a bus. In Nottingham, two youths were injured in a shooting and
two more were shot and wounded in Preston.
Missing agoraphobic man found dead
An agoraphobic man who went missing after leaving his home for the first time
in 30 years was found dead last night. Duncan Gibb, 49, failed to return to
his house in Montrose, Angus, earlier this month. His family said that when
he left his home it had been the first time he had set foot outside since he
was 18.
Peril of 120,000 unfilled potholes
No-win, no-fee lawyers have been blamed for a looming crisis on Britain’s
roads as 120,000 potholes are left unfilled each year. Figures released
yesterday by the AA revealed that councils do not have enough money to
repair 12% of Britain’s 1m potholes.
Annan condemns Kenya abuse
Kofi Annan, former United Nations secretary-general, yesterday condemned
“gross and systematic abuses of human rights” in Kenya after visiting the
country. He said conflict may have been triggered by disputed polls but had
evolved into “something else”.
