More than 300 troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan marched through the streets of Winchester to the sound of drums, cheers and heartfelt applause today in an emotional homecoming parade, one of the first such events since the start of the 2003 war.
Thousands of people turned out to welcome the service personnel – from all three branches of the Armed Forces – as they paraded through the historic Hampshire town accompanied by brass bands and fluttering flags. Two Chinook helicopters from nearby RAF Odiham saluted the troops with a flypast.
After marching up the medieval High Street, the men and women were treated to a reception in their honour hosted by the county council, where they were presented with a glass tankard and bottle of local beer each and ceremonial scrolls for each unit.
Attending the march were troops from the Rifles and the King’s Royal Hussars, the 1st Battalion Irish Guards, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, the frigate HMS Richmond, RAF Odiham and the 4 General Support (Medical) Regiment.
Some of the regiments have long associations with Winchester or are Hampshire-based with many stationed at the home of the British Army in Aldershot. There are more service personnel and their families stationed in Hampshire than in Scotland, according to the county council.
The parade is the latest in a series of high profile events since local authorities were criticised by senior military figures for not doing enough to recognise forces who have completed perilous operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Unlike in the United States, where returning service personnel are regularly treated to heroes' welcomes, public anger at Britain's involvement in the conflicts - particularly Iraq - has discouraged many councils from publicly honouring troops.
The dearth of such events led General Sir Richard Dannatt, the head of the Army, to complain in September that the life-endangering work carried out by troops was not being properly appreciated.
The Government too has drawn fire for allegedly mistreating returning personnel, with the Royal British Legion in September launching a campaign calling on ministers to mend the "broken military covenant."
But today, Bob Ainsworth, the Armed Forces minister, urged the public to demonstrate their gratitude, saying: “Our armed forces really are man for man, woman for woman, the best in the world.
“We should do our utmost to show how proud we are of them, to acknowledge their bravery and the sacrifices which they and their families make on our behalf.”

My beloved Winchester and Two Guards Regiments - wonderful ! The "Micks" and The "Grens" .

The men and women of the Armed Forces deserve better, not from the people of the UK, who unreservedly support their commitment to public service, but from politicians who consistently fail to identify and address their pressing needs. Why, for instance, does it require the dedicated efforts of a BBC Top Gear presenter to identify and then address the need for proper health care and physiotherapy for wounded service members? Is this the first military operation that the UK has been involved in?
Andrew Verrall , Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany
Well done to our girls and boys, Glad to have you back home!
Andrew, Cardiff, UK
This country and this government doesnt deserve its armed forces.
p phillips, coventry,
Phoenix Skyharbor airport has a permanent hospitality suite for US Servicemen with complimentary beverages etc - a heartwarming gesture which it would be good to see introduced at BAA-controlled airports in the UK. Most air passengers are not aware that included in the "taxes and charges" added to an airline tickets is a "UK Airport Service Charge" of £9.50p. This must produce a tidal wave of money every day of the year - you do the maths ! Where is all this money going ?
David, Slough, Berks UK
Good to see the UK troops getting a well deserved welcome home. If you love freedom thank a soldier, (or an airman, sailor, or marine) and maybe buy him a drink.
Joe Thornton, Warrenton VA, USA
Well done Winchester council, lets hope more councils do this and are not afraid of celebrating the armed forces for fear of offending a very small minority.
I definitely feel a wind a change coming against all this PC rubbish. We are British and we are proud!!!!
Andrew Doyle, Manchester,
About time too.

Finally, some council has shown some guts and put on some small show of appreciation for the hard risky work our armed services put in.
Whether you agree with the war or not, these brave men and women are doing what they are ordered to, and protecting us around the world.
Listen up councils around the country, and make sure all our troops are welcomed back home.
Paul, LEEDS,
Wish I'd known - I'd have driven there to welcome back our brave boys and girls from war. Best wishes to you all !!!
miles, London,
Although not all may agree with Iraq and Afghanistan our armed forces put their lives at risk for the every Britain the least we can do is recognise their efforts and sacrifices and support them to the best of our abilities.
D. Barnes, London,
Very glad to have our guys and girls home again. They must have often wondered what the hell they were doing there. They have performed a sterling service to Mr. Blair. Now the question we should ask is, "How many innocent Iraqis have died or suffered through our warmongering?", and "How can we ever redress this?"
