The man, the films, those blondes. Free DVD collection starting this Sunday

The television prankster Jeremy Beadle has died after a short battle with pneumonia, aged 59.
Once dubbed the “most hated man in Britain” by critics, Beadle regularly attracted television audiences of more than 15 million for his programmes Beadle’s About and You’ve Been Framed. The programmes, which aired video clips sent in by viewers and pranks on unsuspecting members of the public, often disguised the ITV stalwart’s intellectual fascination with trivia and the history of practical jokes.
Beadle had leukaemia diagnosed in 2005 after developing cancer of the kidney, but he refused to use his condition as a reason to stop working. Last autumn he released three new books and before his illness he was working on some new television formats.
Beadle, a former editor at Time Out magazine, was catapulted to fame in 1981 by the success of Game for a Laugh, the hit ITV show that used hidden camera set-ups. Henry Kelly, his co-presenter, said: “Jeremy and I were firm friends for nearly 30 years. I loved and admired him and I shall miss him desperately. Not only was he a terrific colleague in our Game for a Laugh days and beyond, but he was a most wonderful friend to have and the most entertaining company you could possibly imagine.”
The entrepreneur Sir Alan Sugar, a close friend of Beadle, described him as “one of the most charitably minded and generous people I have ever come across”. He said: “He was also one of the greatest comedy talents of our generation. He made millions laugh and he will never be forgotten.”
When the ratings for Beadle’s About and You’ve Been Framed faded, Beadle published a series of trivia books, showcasing his knowledge of dates and events, which sold in their millions. He also appeared in numerous pantomimes and as circus ringmaster for Gerry Cottle.
Television fame brought Beadle considerable wealth, which he invested in his home in Hertfordshire with its library of 22,000 books.
Beadle’s charitable efforts included helping children with Poland’s syndrome, which he suffered from and which left him with a withered right hand. He was a significant fundraiser for Children with Leukaemia throughout his life and is estimated to have raised more than £100 million for charities. In 1998 he disclosed that he had helped a friend dying of motor neuron disease to commit suicide. He was appointed MBE in 2001.
Describing his role as a prankster to some, irritant to others, he once said: “I’m the Fouche, Talleyrand and Cardinal Wolsey.”
He once said: “People feel guilty about enjoying the cruelty of comedy which is at someone else’s expense. They transfer their guilt on to me. But I say let them hate me . . . as long as they watch.”

May God be with you.

Rest in Peace, Jeremy. You made me laugh, a lot. Thanks.

Jeremy Beadle. Well what really can we say - a true supremo of saturday night cachinnation, who will, no doubt, be deeply missed by his fans of yesteryear.
He brought so much jocularity to our screens with his comical pranks and tricks, we have lost a great legend of televisual entetainment - heartfelt condolences to all his family, from all his fans.
mark, coventry, coventry
You almost expect him to rise from the coffin with a microphone to give the whole congregation a shock and a laugh!
Rest in peace and thanks for brightening up my saturday evenings and sundays on LBC.
Joe, London,
Rest in Peace Beadle. Remember watching your show with the family when I was a kid. You did many more great things than I'll ever do. A great man. Deepest sympathy to the family. If only there were more like him.

He was the People's Prankster.
Bradley Hotson, London, England
Like the now returned Doctor Who Jeremy Beadle was about family entertainment. Family & friends getting together around the TV and sharing something good. Reading his obituaries has brought a tear to my eye and made me wish I'd posted appreciative comments when he was still with us. I didn't realise that some of the things printed about him were so nasty and unkind. His charity work was amazing. He has left a truly remarkable legacy. My heartfelt condolances to his family.
Dawn, Manchester,
Does anyone remember the night on LBC when he decided to do his show out in the street, he went on buses, lost the signal in the tube, interviewed people in the street, it was fantastic radio. Then he told us it was all a spoof, all done from the studio. What a brilliantly clever man, we shall miss him.
Ray Greenwood, Bedford,
They say he died at the stroke of midnight (When the little hand touches the big hand).
tom, london,
First listened to him when he was LBC presenterin 1970s. His phone in show was full of laughter and it was amazing how knew almost everything. His extraordinary talents and knowledge were under -used and often underestimated by calling him a prankster. A self-educated man he was a singular phenomenon. May his soul rest in peace
Gary Smith, LONDON,
You help raise £7,000 for the Leicester Royal Infirmary Cancer unit from one of your fantastic quiz nights..........Thank you

Like many, I had no idea how much of his life he committed to charity. Just look how many posts there are here today compared to the top worldwide or national news item. It says all you need to know. Touched an awful lot of lives at a time when this country meant something to those who lived here! I hope his family find some solace in the kind words that ordinary people, who he invariably never met, have taken the time to post here. God Bless.
Mr James, Sutton , Surrey
I guess all up there in heaven are now laughing uproariously at your brilliant humour and wonderful anecdotes . But please go easy on the pranks, Jeremy! You will be greatly missed. R.I.P.

Sad he's passed. Wanted to pay my respects. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.
Jon, Gatley, Cheshire
A key part of my childhood, i remember as a child the whole family all gathering round to watch Beadles about and You've been framed. He made us roll around with laughter, but at the same time you could really tell what an intelligent man he was with all his historical facts and figures. I am sad to learn of his passing, but rest safe in the knowledge that his legendary career will never be forgotten, he did some great work for charities and so forth. My thoughts go out to his family and friends. xx
Joanne Birkinshaw, Belper, Derbyshire

Maria, Southampton,
A sad loss to showbiz and his fans. Many years ago I briefly met him at an Ideal Home Exhibition in London. He was then a Radio Presenter with one of the London Stations. I watched his transition over the years into the nations chief practical joker with interest. We won't see his like again. Thanks Jeremy.

Best watch out now world, Beadle's REALLY about!
Like previous posters have mentioned, I remember growing up watching him with my Mum and Dad (both gone now), very fond memories that will keep me warm when I think of them long into my dotage.

An amazing talent which shall be sadly missed. One of my fondest childhood memories is of been back home on a saturday night watching beadles about! brings tears to my eyes thinking about the laughs we had as a family. On the one occasion I met him, at a charity dinner, he was charming, funny and most of all genuine. If you could laugh at yourself, you loved him
bg, london,
It's said that there is no direct translation of the German "schadenfreude". However, may I suggest that "Beadle" would be a good enough one for most.
Philip, Hong Kong,
One of my most enduring memories from my childhood is, however it may be considered now, sitting at around 7.00pm with my mum, dad and brother, in the living room to watch 'you've been framed'. It was a real treat for myself and my brother, truely entertaining. I don't think it is important what the 'general pubic' thought of him, or how he was considered. There are things that are far more valuable than that. I don't judge his qualities or abilities, but he was a mainstay of the popular culture of my childhood.
Marie, Cambridge,,
His creativity with the jokes he played was amazing. He brightened up many a life, despite suffering his own adversity. Shall never forget him celebrating he league with the rest of the Arsenal fans at Highbury in 1991.

Shurely it is only a mater of time before a gold statue, 12 feet high, is erected in his honour in his beloved home town of Edgbaston. he would have wept with joy! the statue could be put up in someone's garden whilst they were at work or something - it's what he would have wanted!
MJ Swinton, Birmingham,
I was never a huge fan of the late Jeremy Beadle the TV showman but my respect for him through his charitable efforts is immeasurable. The man was immense and an example to us all. Few manage to raise 1% of his totals in their lifetime but £100 million speaks volumes about him.
If one can imagine his funeral and a rather suspicious policeman were to join the congregation it would be most fitting that, to an unsuspecting audience, he whip out a microphone and ask the mourners to move their cars as they are double parked. Not unlike our Jeremy!
God bless you Mr Beadle and we all will miss you in our onw ways..

Shocked indeed, I was a contestant on Jeremy's quiz show "Chain Letters" in 1987 and remember him well. Lively, entertaining and witty ... no idea he did so much for charity, to be commended for his caring. The world needs more like him.

I'm really shocked to hear of your passing. I was lucky enough to meet you in the early nineties during a circus you did at Wembley. I bragged about that so much! I also remember watching You've Been Framed all the time as a kid. It was truly one of my favourite programmes back in those days.
Thanks for the laughs and may you rest in peace.

Jeremy was a hugely intelligent an knowledgeable man who had a great sense of fun.
Some of the pranks may have seemed cruel, but it was easy to see from his reactions that he got the most satisfaction from the revealing of the pranks and the relief of the person who was being tricked.
He did a great deal for charity and he was a warm and kind-hearted man who cared deeply for others.
He will be greatly missed.
Gareth Edwards, Stoke on Trent, UK
Jeremy was lege - i remember him from when i was a kid, the whole family would sit around a watch beadles about on a saturday evening... the best bit was when he turned up to reveal to the "victim" wearing some dodgy disguise. A true comic of his time, and as mentioned a devoted charity worker.

I was never a fan of Mr Beadle but any premature death is a very sad affair. After reading this article I feel it is a shame that I (and many others) never knew of his charitable works and the fondness he instilled in those that knew him personally. But It is a testament to his memory that I shall always think of him with a new found respect and a knowing that once again a very special soul has so very briefly touch so many lives, but the mark he leaves will never fade.
My deepest sympathy to all that were close to him

Shocked and upset to hear of this great man's death at such an early age. He was an icon and his tv shows were so much a part of the fabric of my childhood. I never understood why he was "hated"-how can anyone who wants to make people laugh be disliked? I always thought of him as a very likeable, if mischievous, chap. He will be sadly missed and my prayers and condolences go out to his family.

Is there any chance that The Times can still carry on the tradition of referring to Jeremy Beadle, who has received an MBE as 'Jeremy Beadle MBE'? It would seem to be a fitting tribute to use his full well earned title, particularly in something as significant as an obituary.
Matt Brown, London, UK
I didnt' know you Jeremy only from the TV, therefore you did not figure in my daily thoughts. However I feel so sad and shocked at your passing, this can only be testiment to the influence you have had on me by the happy memories of Saturday nights with my family when I was a child and my recognition of you as a wonderful human being you were away from the TV.

What a great guy he was. Quietly raising over £100 million for charities over such a long period of time, and just an MBE? People (especially politicians) have been knighted for far less.
Pity the press didn't make more of his virtues and his good works during his lifetime, instead of just treating him as a figure of fun.
A man is not defined by what he does for a living, but by who he is, and what he stands for.
This was a man we couldn't afford to have lost so soon. Rest in peace.

If you knew how he obtained some of it you'd say a fat one.
However, he did give those of us fortunate enough to be there the awesome Bickershaw festival for which I shall be forever Grateful, not to mention The New Riders, Dr. John, Cheech & Chong and host of American artists that I never expected to see live in my lifetime, let alone the early 70's.

Nobody was at good at pranking. He outshines the current Jackass generation of 'comedians'. I love Sasha Baron Cohen and its clear that British pranking has always been the best and still is. I think we owe Beadle a great debt of gratitude for modern prank icons such as Ali G, Borat and Dom Jolie's set of 'characters'.
Miss him everyone, he was the best even though we 'loved to hate' him - that really means 'hate to admit we loved him'.
Rest well Jeremy

Quite simply a pioneer. One only need look at the shows which spawned from Beadles ideas, Jackass, Trigger Happy TV, Punk'd. It all started with Beadle's About!
An entertainer and a great Englishman.
Our thoughts go out to his family, he will be missed.
Lee Nicholson, Swieqi, Malta
I had the privilege of working with Jeremy and found him one of the most generous and warm-hearted people I worked with. He cared for every person in a stage production, treating dancers and stage crew as being equally, if not more important than the tops of the bill. He did so much genuine charity work with no oublicity and would always remember people he had met and worked with. A real star of the entertainment world which now burns bright in heaven. St Peter wonlt know what's hit him when Beadle (as we all knew him) gets settled in!
God Bless you Jeremy, you left a mark on humanity which will never be erased and a legacy which will never be forgotten by your friends and colleagues.
My deepest sympathy to Sue, Cassie & Bonnie, and also Leo & Claire.
