The family of Stephen Lawrence, the murdered black teenager, was said to be "devastated" tonight after a £10 million architectural centre dedicated to his memory was vandalised in an apparent racial attack just one week after it opened.
Stephen's mother Doreen Lawrence was too upset to speak to the press following the incident at the Stephen Lawrence Centre in Deptford, south-east London, last night. She visited the building to survey the damage after eight large windows designed by Chris Ofili, the Turner Prize-winning artist and said to be worth around £15,000 each, were shattered with bricks in an attack that police said appeared to be racially motivated.
Karin Woodley, the chief executive of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust said on behalf of the family: “They are devastated, but this won’t hinder the work of the charity.
“She [Ms Lawrence] feels great sadness like we all do but this has also reinforced her determination,” Ms Woodley said.
The latest in a string of attacks on the centre, the vandalism comes on the 11th anniversary of the inquest which pronounced the killing of Mr Lawrence an unprovoked racist murder.
It was met with expressions of outrage from across the capital. Hazel Blears, Communities Minister, branded the perpetrators "twisted" while Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, described it as an “outrageous act of racism”.
Mr Livingstone said: “I am disgusted by this racist attack on the Stephen Lawrence Centre, which comes only one week after it officially opened.
“This latest outrageous act of racism follows several others over the past few months on the centre.
“It also comes on the anniversary of the inquest that confirmed Stephen’s death to be an unprovoked racist murder, and will be even more distressing for his mother Doreen, who has fought to establish this cultural landmark for the whole community.”
The London Development Agency, which helped fund the centre, would assist with repairs if required, he said.
Police were called to the centre on Brookmill Road in Deptford, south-east London at 5.45am following reports that vandals had destroyed the large front windows with bricks.
It is thought that the bricks were thrown from behind a 2.5 metre high metal fence surrounding the three-storey building. A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: “The incident is being treated as racial. That follows an allegation by a member of public.

This may or may not have had a racial element. But while not in any way condoning this or any other vandalism it is not hard to see why those who, are shall I say less sophisticated ,get fed up with being patronised by opportunists like the odious Ken Livingstone while their own problems go un- noticed. And now this has happened the insults continue with the usual supects falling over themselves to get attached to this unfortunate incident. We ought not to be surprised if the next on the list is Ian Blair promising to divert massive resources to find what are at the end of the day just yet more vandals, like all the others who go untouched. Have they no sense at all?
D.L. Stephens, York, England
The words, racist, racism & racially, appear no less than 10 times in this article. This is no less than hysteria and is in itself likely to cause divisiveness and tension within a mostly settled community.
Why are the police treating it as a "racially motivated" attack? Because a member of the public, who didn't even witness the attack alledges that it was so, even though it may well have been perpetrated by a person or persons of any ethnic background, whatsoever. The Police are then duty bound to treat it as a "hate crime", even though it is more likely to be a wanton act of vandalism.
Any large area of glass is likely to be treated in the same way by opportunist thugs.
The Lunatics have taken over the asylum, methinks!

I have now read this story on a good half a dozen different newspaper/news websites, and I have yet to find anything to suggest this attack was racially motivated.
Just because the centre was named after a black person, does not mean that vandalism of it is automatically racially motivated. Mind you, I'd question whether the poor boys murder really was - the perpetrators would have gladly attacked a non black person just as readily.
Shame on Ken for trying to jump on yet another bandwagon.

Deptford is not predominantly white, it is overwhelmingly black.

Sorry, misread your post

I 'm very uneasy about Ken Livingstone calling this a "racist attack" because at the moment we don't know who was to blame. It could just be mindless idiots (plenty of them around)and yes I know that it follows an allegation by a member of the public, but I still feel that his statement could stir up trouble which is the last thing we want. With the election coming up I think Livingstone was after some cheap vote winning headlines.I think he should hold fire until the culprits are caught and we know the motives.
Mike, Dunstable, England
I'm absolutely not saying we shouldn't have these sorts buildings dedicated to the memory of individuals, but you have to think about the logic of building an expensive glass building with the knowledge that it will be a target for idiots. £15,000 per window when kids need supplies in schools seems foolish to say the least and the aim to "provide thousands of deprived young people with opportunities in fields of architecture, urban design and building" is wishful thinking to say the least. As with all things, a bit of common sense at the outset would have reduced the chances of this. This does not justify what has happened - it goes without saying that all forms of racism and discrimination are disgusting.
Contractor , London, England
I love how people are very quick to say this wasn't racially motivated - if you actually READ the article you'd see that the attack came on the anniversary of the inquest that confirmed Stephenâs death to be an unprovoked racist murder.
Use your heads, cretins.
Ryan, London,
And the evidence is?
Peterr, Northants, England
I am sincerely sorry for those racist people. As a white person I am proud to be living with the who represent different races because this is how God created us, this is how it should be.
I can only say that those vandalists are simply sick and are trying to support the racial disintegration of our society!
Grigol Gegelia, London,
I wonder what CCTV picked up...
Farrukh, Woking, UK
Unless racist people are actually proven to have smashed the windows for racist reasons how on earth can this be labled a racist attack? Surely more likely if the centre has been attacked a number of times is that it was just mindless yobs with nothing better to do.
Elroy, Bethlehem, USA
England or Spain? It's the same everywhere?. No, it isn't. This is worse than Montmelo, Barcelona.
JL Sharp, Suffolk,
I can say that mr livingstone makes these remarks but he does not know deptford people has they do get there backs up when these things happen what about kids having some fun but then what about a pay out for those who were said to have done this crime but the lawrence family have had more money than any other case is this english city my great grand father came from deptford who won a lot of medals but who cares he only lost hes life for england but when i go to deptford i do not even see his name so the council who fail the lewisham past Have a nice day its a long way from welling but you have more things in hand like i fell sorry but the lawrence family came from greenwich
alan, lewisham, u/k
Obviously a very sad incident... however vandalism occurs all over the country on a regular basis, so this incident is hardly newsworthy, except that the target was on this ocassion higher profile than the local shops, or school. In addition, what evidence is their that this attack was racially motivated? It would be nice if politicians like ken Livingstone got so irrate about the anti-social behaviour that blights the lives of so many people in the Uk on a regular basis.
Andrew brown, derby, uk
Somebody just threw a brick through my window in an area that is predominately white - racist of course.
Frederick, London, UK
Disgusting.
I can't think of ANYTHING else to say.
