In quotes: Mohamed Al Fayed on Diana
A vast conspiracy to murder Diana, Princess of Wales, at the behest of the Duke of Edinburgh was outlined today by Mohamed al Fayed as he took the witness stand at the inquests of the princess and of his son, Dodi.
The alleged plot involved Prince Philip, Prince Charles, British, French and American security services, the French judiciary, ambulance staff, pathologists, newspaper editors, two former Metropolitan police commissioners, the Princess’s sister and brother-in-law, the former British ambassador to France, and the Princess’s lawyer, among others, and it was sanctioned by Tony Blair.
The motive was racist, asserted the Harrods owner. The Duke could not abide the thought of the Princess marrying Dodi Fayed because he was “of a different religion [and] who was naturally tanned [with] curly hair”, Mr Al Fayed said.
He himself had learnt that his son was to marry the Princess an hour before they died, he said. He told the jury that his son had telephoned him to say he had bought the ring, and that they were shortly to announce their engagement.
Ian Burnett QC, for the inquest asked: “It must have been momentous news, who did you share it with?”
Mr Al Fayed said he could not remember. “This was an hour before they were killed, how can I be Mr Happy when they have been murdered the next day?” he said.
As well as Prince Philip, the Prince of Wales was also involved in the plot “because he would like to marry…his crocodile wife.”
The Princess and Dodi Fayed were killed when the Mercedes they were travelling in crashed into a pillar in the Alma Tunnel in Paris in August 1997. The driver, Henri Paul, who as acting head of security at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, was an employee of Fayed, was also killed in the crash.
French and British police investigations both concluded the deaths were tragic accidents caused by their speeding driver, who was found to be drunk.
Today Mr Al Fayed claimed that the blood samples from the driver upon which these conclusions were based were false. He said he had first become convinced of a plot when Lord Condon and Lord Stevens, two former commissioners of the Metropolitan Police, had failed to pass on a note from Lord Mishcon, the Princess’s lawyer, describing her fears that she would be assassinated.
Previous witnesses at the inquests have refuted the idea that the Princess of Wales planned to marry his son, as well as the allegation, which he repeated today, that the Princess was pregnant with his grandson.

grief can make you do strange things, but this rant is inexcusable. and he was making up stories long before dodi died. I wonder how he would feel if the spotlight remained so long on his acquisition of harrods or his approaches to female employees.
he's about as credible as mohammed saeed al shahaf saying "there are no tanks in our streets" as they roll by in the background.
how can he be so desperate to get hold of a british passport and at the same time be so anti-establishment? seems to be rather a common theme among a certain section of our society, of course. willing conspiracy theorists all.
jack - the answer to your question about who shops at harrods is americans, arabs and japs. ie - tourists with more money than sense. americans don't mind being ripped off if they feel they bought into some historic culture, even if it's just ersatz glitz. there was a time when harrods offered something different, but you can get their stuff everywhere (and cheaper) now.
jem, london, uk
ok, kim, I've asked myself why diana's protection was removed. I'm going with the obvious â it's because she was no longer officially a member of the royal family and had distanced herself from the establishment. given that she spent half her time denigrating them and the other half promoting herself, it's not surprising. I don't think she was a target for anyone. as far as I know, there was no fatwa against being a mooning fantasist.
if I'm wrong, al fayed had better watch out.
jem, london, uk
a tragic event, one would hope the Royal Family could now put it behind them and move on.
paul, Cambridge, UK
I feel sick that some contributors actually agree with Fayed that she was murdered. Honestly, God knows why and, if you ask Fayed himself, he will be ashamed to insist that Allah is with him on this.
Diana was NOT pregnant; Diana was NOT engaged to anyone; Diana was on the rebound; Diana would never, ever, inform anyone but her sons of important decisions! Somewhat rules out sudden engagement let alone pregnancy to Dodi
If Fayed believes in Allah; he would, by now know, he is on a road to nowhere, however sad. Don't know why he is so insistent in prolonging the agony for our Princes, her sons, who would, before anybody else, would have been asked by their mum if they minded their new stepdad let alone, and incredibly, a pregnancy!
Anyone believing she'd tell Fayed before consulting her sons should be the sole beacon of reason why this case is insane and a huge question mark as to why we have to pay anything towards it. Devastating for Fayed - Yes! Affordable to him - Quite
LT, Warminster, UK
Simon of Hitchin. Yours was precisely the point I was trying to make to Ash, if you read between the lines.
But thanks for your comment anyway.
Louise, Mirfield, England
The best transport, security and a skilled advanced driver at the wheel, yet Diana still ended up dead....exactly as she predicted she would!
That does not smell, it absolutely reeks of conspiracy. But I expect the decision of 'accidental death' will still prevail.
roger hayes, gt yarmouth, england norfolk
After 9/11, 7/7, the London Nailbombings, Dr David Kelly, the million+ dead Iraqis and the rest, there is no reason to doubt this was a murder by the 'hand of god'. The first question Roman judges used to ask in court was "Who benefits?", if the establishment benefitted from the convenient accident it should be the prime suspect, not a protected scapegoat.
John, Sheffield, England
Accident or no accident there was a lot more to this than has or will ever come out and I can fully understand why a grieving (and probably guiltridden) father with the financial clout to be able to, to rock the establishment boat for answers.
Cameras were NOT switched off - enough drivers received tickets on the night to demonstrate that. Infact the Mercedes itself was recorded on one camera as doing 64mph.
Everything was and has since been pinned on a conveniently drunk driver. A plausable explanation of the huge amounts of carbon monoxide in his blood has to date not been given. The initial justification given that it was due to the airbags was disproven by Mercedies itself who denied that carbon monoxide was used in its airbags. HP was supposedly have drank the equivalent of eight whiskies, the fact he seemed absolutely unaffected by that was explained away by saying he had also traces of drugs given to alcoholics in his system.... yet his liver was in perfect working order.
JOAN, newcastle, uk
Louise, Mirfield, and Ash, Sheffield. You both need to do your homework. HRH is only a title which confers rank on princes and princesses ( although it is not always applied or taken ). It plays no part in the succession to the throne as succession is along lineage and sex ( males taken precedence over females ) and irrespective of taken title i.e HRH.
So any child she would have had with Fayed or anyone else that is not a direct member/bloodline of the Royal family would be ineligible to succeed to the throne. Furthermore any future monarch must be of the faith of the Church of England. So a Muslim, Catholic or Hindu etc would be ineligible.
Why that should cause any division between anyone other than one very delusional man 'not of good character', ( the reason given by both Tory and Labour Governments for the rejection of his numerous applications for a UK passport) is beyond me.
Simon, Hitchin,
Why not send both AF (+Co) and the Royals back to germany as suggested and end this farcical waste of tax payers money.
They are dead and that is that.
Steve, London,
If Diana and Dodi had been wearing their seatbelts, then they would both almost certainly have survived with only minor injuries if any, I am surprised that no one ever mentions this.
Bernard Crouch, London, UK
I'm quite tempted to picket Harrods this weekend. Anyone keen?
His constant slander against the monarchy is frankly disgusting, at what point can we dredge out the law book on treason...
Ben , London, UK
And furthermore, the Royal Family had taken away Diana's police protection.
She was the future King of England's mother, an extremely important person in the future King of England's life.
Why would they take away her protection? Why would they leave her unprotected?
ASk yourselves.
Kim, London,
I am a firm believer in freedom of speech afterall this is a democracy. Mind you only just !
If Al Fayed believes something then let him, I am sure we all have our own views and opinions about this however bulletin boards like this are the opportunity we have.
I am under the impression that Al-Fayed is footing the bill for all this anyway. The TV principle applies here, if you don't like him or what he says, turn off !
Stephen, Cheshire, UK
Ash of Sheffield. Diana was the mother of the future King. Just because Diana divorced an adulter does not make her role of mother become defunct anymore than it makes Williams role of futrue King become defunct.
Kim, London,
Ash, if you do your homework, you will discover that the stripping of Diana's HRH title did not and will not jepordise William becoming future King. Period.
Your comment regarding "further creating a divide between British Muslims and the rest of us" confuses me.
I wasn't aware that a divide existed or was about to........?
Louise, Mirfield, England
I note support from Muslims here, that is Ok but aren't Muslims supposed to grieve with dignity? Not like some East Enders barrow boy character.
He even has his demons mixed up. Frankenstein the fictional creator of the monster has no connection with the fictional Dracula who was a vampire. The authors were Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker respectively.
Further the Duke's ancestry is Danish and Russian, not German as Fayed claims. The queen's ancestry is German in part
If you wanted to murder someone why choose the method least likely to bring success? There is no guarantee that all will die in a crash especially if wearing seat belts, as the supposedly responsible Diana was not. Even the passenger in the 'death seat' survived. If Diana had been shot or poisoned there would have been room for speculation indeed.
If a car bomb had been used the outcome would have been more certain. I am sure the alleged secret agents are well versed in ways of killing people
plato, ely, uk
Why are people and al-Fayed speaking of this 'future king'? Diana lost her HRH status when she got divorced, therefore no longer a royal and so any supposed child would have no claim to the throne. So enough of this 'killed them because did not want future king to be half muslim' rubbish. All it is doing is further creating a divide between British Muslims and the rest of us.
Ash, Sheffield,
Of course it isn't true but that is not the point. My main feeling is sadness for the grieving Mohammed Al Fayed. Here is a man who was viciously snubbed by the British Establishment and who experienced abrupt and shocking bereavement. Instead of being included in the nation's grief, he was ostracised and ridiculed. Brooding on this for the last 10 years, he has come up with an extraordinary conspiracy theory. This is a man who is surrounded by sycophants who do not challenge him. What he needed was someone to take him aside and put their arm round him. I suspect that person does not exist and in his loneliness and grief, he has embroidered and expanded this theory until it has unbalanced him. I think it is desperately sad and there are some people who, instead of laughing, should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
David, Guildford,
Perhaps there was a plot, but the crash was, as seems most likely, an accident, rendering the plot no longer necessary.
David, Matlock, UK
There's a lot doesn't add up about the death of Diana, but this is just plain crackers
Richard, Bexhill, UK
I am horrified and angry that al-Fayed is allowed to get away with the tirade of abuse he has flung at all and sundry. Doesn't it show how absolutely insane he is accusing a journalist of being in M16, Tony Blair of conspiracy to murder and the Duke of Edinburgh of plotting murder, to name but a few. It is our money, as tax payers, paying for this ridiculous farce of a court case and it is obvious, unless the jury are mad as well, that he will lose the battle. In the circumstances, therefore, who will pay the court costs? British subjects or the man who is not even a British subject? If he is not forced to pay all the costs, then, as we all know this case has been brought to trial for nothing and is a total waste of time, money and energy. Not to mention the distress it has probably caused the Royal family and the two Princes. Make Mr al-Fayed pay the all court costs and lets all boycott Harrods at the same time!
Judith Avis, Broadway, Worcestershire
How could the alleged plotters have known that a large solid sturdy Mercedes was going to be driven so fast that passengers would die and not merely be injured in a crash?
wonderer, London,
Why he is gone insane, He has the right to find his son's death. I am not suprised to hear that form PM Tony Blair had a hand on it specially when had two aweful wars and he is now ''a peace envoy'', isn't funny!!!?
Hamdi, Brisbane, Australia
Isn't it a bit fishy that all these comments are against Mohamed Al Fayad?
The people really in the know, know the truth and the truth will prevail in the end!
I wish Mohamed Al Fayad success and with help from God he will prevail in battling against these dark forces with such an incredibly strong media manipulation machine that is being used against him.
Thair El Heri, Benghazi, Libya
Ed Ward, Bristol. You took the words right out of my mouth.
The perpetrators of this plot would have surely silenced Mr Al Fayed long since, if they were infact guilty as accused.......
A very sad situation here.
Louise, Mirfield, England
I watched on BBC that Al Fayed slammed journalists as well, accusing them as MI6. 'Al' must be able to prove his (baseless) accusations. Otherwise, 'Al' stands for 'Alzheimer's'...
Israr Ardiansyah, Jakarta, Indonesia
Poor Mr Al Fayed's claims are so preposterously far fetched and lacking any evidence whatsoever; and his only rebuttal to all the other evidence is the assertion that whoever is delivering information which supports a contrary view to his conspiracy theory is that they're part of the conspiracy. Hmm...
Tom Dickin, Cornwall, England
Exactly how many thousand people are involved in this conspiracy spreading across Europe. And exactly how many millions of pounds has this ridiculous charade cost the British people.
This is the consequence of our celebrity culture and obsession with the life of a not very bright woman who happened to look good in an evening dress.
Pathetic.
Mark, Berkhamsted, UK
This case has all the markings of a classic X File. Questions that will never be answered by the inquest at the High Court include:
- Why were the roadside CCTV cameras en route and in the tunnel not working that fateful night?
- What caused the blinding flash of light in the tunnel described by some witnesses?
- Why exactly was the Chauffeur in the employ of the Security Services.
- Why is the driver of the White Fiat Uno dead?
- What happended to Diana's wooden box and its contents?
- What does the Butler really know?
The truth is out there, be we mere mortals will never know!
Manicured Man, St Albans, Herts
A lot of people might agree with the headline.
F Cockburn, London, UK
These are the ravings of a bitter old man. He's just venting his anger against the UK establishment having been refused a UK passport time and time again by successive governments.
Jake, London,
Grief and guilt can push people over the edge.
From all accounts, Mr. Fayed encouraged his son to develop a relationship with Diana, hoping to enhance his own status in the UK. He knows there was no planned engagement, no pregnancy, indeed no real relationship. These two barely knew one another.
Mr. Fayed is right to grieve for his son, but he must also live the rest of his days surrounded by his own guilt stemming from pushing his son to date the mother of a future king and from having employed the driver who drank too much and drove too fast.
Andrea, Fort Wayne, Indiana USA
I don't think that Mr Al Fayed is committing libel: I think he has gone insane.
His son's death happened years ago now. If Mr Al Fayed was going to recover on his own, there would be clear signs by now.
Is nobody going to get Mr Al Fayed the psychiatric help he needs?
Keith T, Winnipeg, Canada
So, let's review...
According to 'Al' -- (thanx Kevin in Orlando), the love birds were murdered because Di was pregnant
According to 'Al' - he was the only one they told
Did Al really think this through? Does he really want criminal charges pressed? Assuming statements A&B above are correct (which is a wild assumption), Fayed is the only one for the dock. Of course those statements, along with his other rantings, are from the fevered brain of a man who's grip on reality has relaxed a bit too much.
For those who can even begin to entertain this theory, please remember that the papparazzi were ever-present. If Her Majesty's finest were going to kill anyone, they would have done so with a higher-probability approach, and NOT in the presence of dozens of snoops with cameras.
If you're not convinced, try this experiment: get drunk, forget seat-belts, race through Paris at night, with you eyes glued to high-beams in your rear-view mirror.
Arrange to have your next of kin report back.
Dan'l, Portland, US/Maine
Sadly, the poor, unbalanced Princess's own actions made this pawing through personal lives necessary.
It is a circus, but then so was much of her life.
John Chuckman, toronto, Canada
Agreed, agreed agreed John. Unbelivable!
Lizzie, London, Uk
I was one of at least two 13 year old boys, back in
1981, who were so jealous when watching the wedding of that fair, sweet beauty, that they were absolutely prepared to shoot the rival husband. Since then, naturally, things have cooled off a bit and one had gradually lost interest. Being a fellow country-man of the alleged nazi-duke, I watched the british tabloid focus on the royal family with the raised eyebrow of one who fails to get the point entirely.
Picture my astonishment, therefore, when I found myself crying buckets in front of the TV in that summer night of 1997.
I have been following the case ever since, finally drawing the
same conclusions as most of the others have:
The drunk driver, scared of the reprimand by the big junior-boss, the feudal corporate culture that puts obedience before common sense, the inevitable disaster.
So, indeed, this hearing is probably a waste of time and money.
We have learnt something of value though:
Who is M. Al Fayed.
Dr. Matthias Messer, Essen, Germany
i'm sure that it was tony blair in the conservative with the lead piping
tom irving, bristol,
I've never organised a murder, but if I did I'm not sure I'd involve this cast of thousands. They've all managed to keep the secret very well up till now, haven't they? Not one person going to the media about it.
In the end Diana's death came down to her not wearing a seat belt. So in fact the "organised murder" happened through a stroke of bad luck/vanity or stupidity on her part (unless the bodyguard deliberately undid her seat belt before the crash!) .
If the security services really wanted to kill someone, surely they could have done so with a more reliable method than driving a car into a tunnel support while being chased by a bunch of people on motorbikes?
David, Teddington, UK
Reading the transcripts, I was amazed at the undisguised contempt the coroner's attorney displayed for al Fayed, and his transparent bias against him. All of his questions presumed al Fayed was ridiculous and were designed to confirm that. This damaged the counsel's credibility to me. I wondered why an objective investigation was so anxious to prove a preconceived point.
In 45 years we still have not proven who killed our president, and we have not been so concerned with the monetary cost of our pursuit. We didn't find it. Neither will you. Of course, few of you seem to care.
Catherine, Chicago,
You forgot to include Rocky and Bullwinkle amongst the alleged assassins
Michael , Sydney, Australia
Al Fayed was warned by Diana in advance that she had proof her life was in danger/at risk. She even provided a few names and scenarios.
So why did Mohammed Al Fayed still permit his son Dodi to engage in a serious relationship with Diana? Al Fayed knew his son's life would also be at risk if he became attached to Diana. Perhaps Al Fayed was preoccupied with stoking controversy given the colourful history of relationships in GB.
Al Fayed needs to ponder for a very long minute. Diana's warnings are key in this inquest.
Bobby, Ryde, Isle of Wight,
If you think Muhammed Fayed's comments about the Royal Family are crazy, they pale in comparison to David Icke's!!!
Howard, London, UK
If there were any truth in Mr al-Fayed's accusations, he would not be around now to make them.
Ed Ward, Bristol, UK
Fayed needs to move on. Here are the rantings of a man who, obviously, in part, feels guilty for the death of his beloved son. If he had provided more security for Diana and Dodi, perhaps things would have been different. But his way of dealing with it is to blame everybody else.
But enough is enough. He has crossed the line.
I and many others find Fayed's comments concerning the Royal family and MI6 highly offensive.
The Home Office should do us all a favour by stripping Fayed of his UK citizenship and kicking him out of the UK!
Anna Stevens, Oxford,
Why not go the whole hog? The driver was Elvis in disguise; it wasn't a car, it was a carriage drawn by Shergar; and they were killed as they had found out the truth about JFK.
Rob, Warwick,
This man is a complete nutter, if you were in a jury listening to this bizarre nonsense would you believe it?
The principle of Occam's Razor applies here I think, in any given situation, all things being equal, the simplest answer is usually the correct one. In this case, the driver, who was employed by Fayed, was loaded on booze and drugs and crashed the car. How can anyone with any modicum of commonsense not believe this to be the simple truth.
J Roberts, Manchester, UK
I am surprised that the Lord Justice hasn't himself broken in guffaws of laughter. The Duke of Edinburgh served with distinction in the Royal Navy, and attended school in Scotland -- and was raised by his uncle, the Marquess of Milford Haven, who was his official guardian.
Marlene, Alexandria, VA, USA
Frankly, I'm shocked, but I have to register my respect and admiration of the British legal system, who allows a non-citizen to say all what he said about the heads of the state, and then be allowed to go home free.
As someone who lived in Egypt under the Naser regime in the 1960's, Al Fayed should thank his luckey stars, that he lives in a country that let him say what he said, without being roughed up,or taken behind the Sun!!!.
Sam, dallas, USA
Mr Al-Fayed appears to be from the school of thought, that contends that if you say something often enough, that makes it true. Whatever the evidence to the contrary.
Paul Francis, Brisbane, Australia
Can we now please re-open the enquiry into this person's acquisition of Harrods, an enquiry that made Lord Hutton's seem inordinately thorough?
David Williams, Eastnor, England
In fact, the entire world is lying. A terrible plot entirely against him...
Also, didn't he claim that the motive for the supposed engagement was love? And yet he throws aside the idea of Diana being in love with a surgeon because he was poor?
Leave the poor woman to rest in peace, what kind of justice is all this bringing to her, or to anyone?
Meg, Pembs,
Those who criticise Mr Fayed could answer why there is an inquest TEN full years after her death.
Nothing fishy, eh?
K Urban, London, UK
Looking at the list of those 'involved' why was I not invited.
What an absolute scandalous waste of our taxes .
W J Watkin, Andover, England
What motive would this Fayed fellow have for saying all this publicly. If it is false, he removes all remaining respect for his son. The motive-what is the motive? That is the key to this entire hearing.
Jeff Dunham, Yacol, WA USA
When will this man stop whittering on with his stupid conspiracy theories or be told to shut up?
When he runs out of money, which he won't any time soon. Please can we use taxpayer's money to try him for these slanderous/libellous accusations against members of the Royal Family and a former Prime Minister, who wasn't perfect but is hardly responsible for this.
Mike, Runcorn, United Kingdom
This is beyond ludicrous now.
Even IF the members of the royal family etc. were involved in this somewhat far-fetched and downright elaborate plot...
What are the chances of anyone actually being convicted?
Little or no chance.
So let's stop wasting our taxes; nothing will come of this.
Paul Shephard, Birmingham, UK
Surely these wild, unsubstantiated remarks by this twisted man are libelous? Perhaps legal action will bring him to his senses.
It is unconscionable that so much public money is being spent on this charade.
Bob Tomlin, Scottsdale, Arizona, USA
hilarious
ahmed, london, uk
I deplore the amount of time and money spent on this inquest -but I know of no other country in the world where people are so free to speak their minds. I am and always will be very proud to be British.
Geoff Skuse, Vancouver, B.C. Canada
I could call Mr Al Fayed lots of things, but the voice of reason? No, that's not one that springs to mind.
The man has embroiled and nurtured the whole conspiracy theory, and if I was being kind I would say it's through some misguided loyalty to his son, although I doubt it. We will never know what happened, so perhaps Mr Al Fayed should grieve for his son in private?
Has he never wondered how so many people could have kept such a secret after all these years? No doubt, now that I have contradicted Mr Al Fayed too, I should add myself to the list of people involved in this accident!
Monica, Newbury,
This has to be one ridiculous joke, this case is more about Dodi's mental state (which seems pretty unstable) than about anything else.
Louox, Paris,
IF they were going to kill someone a car accident would be the worse way to do it because theres always a chance they can survive like the body guard did. If they wanted them dead would'nt a mid air explosion on a plane be a much bettter way as theres no chance anyone could surivie.
Jim, melbourne, Australia
We have no right to simply reject what he is saying, the truth is we will never know what really happened because the evidence is not sufficient for a conclusion.
Also is it not worth notice that the government/secret service failed to a Princess. In what is supposed to be a relatively secure part of Europe? It seems strange that she was even able to get into that vehicle with those people, as a princess it would follow that her movements were constantly monitered, and so she protected?
Anita , Staffordshire, England
I am now taking bets on how long it will be before Al-Fayed blames one of the following; The Knights Templars, The Illuminati, the military-industrial complex, the Martians, a secret Jewish dominated world government, the Masons, Elton John (boost for record sales), etc, etc, ad nauseum.
The truth is that when people like Al-Fayed say they won't stop until they find out the truth, what they really mean is that they won't stop until somebody tells them what they want to hear!
Diana was killed in a tragic car accident, largely caused by the intense media interest, which in turn was fuelled by people who boosted magazines sales by buying anything with her image on it and who are now the very people saying how terrible it all was. It is their hands that have blood on them and that is why they are so desperate for anything that might absolve them of their guilt.
Al-Fayed and his cronies should let Diana rest in peace, not inflict further hurt for their own selfish agendas.
Tony, Bristol, England
The outpourings of Mohammed al Fayed are highly reminiscent of those of Idi Amin. Thank Allah that he is not a politician.
M. Howley, Wirral, UK
Fayed is, to me, just grieving albeit in public. I think though that he knows something but is not able to articulate correctly without onlookers perceiving him as a madman. There is always a portion of truth within 'apparent madness'. Look at King Lear.
Happybutterfly, Worthing, UK
I just feel sorry for everyone involved actually. It's just messy.
Happybutterfly, Worthing, UK
I understand that he would want to get any sort of justice for this. Helen, London, England
Helen, What justice on this? Mr. Fayed was the employer of the drunk driver who caused the accident. He is the one ultimately responsible. Justice would be a thin edged sword against him!
Nona, New York City, USA
Some questions remain unanswered - the bright light in the tunnel, the disappearing Fiat, why the princess's body was embalmed contrary to normal procedure - surely a very serious matter, and the controversy about Henri Paul's blood.
So many mysteries. Why?
Sue D, South Cheshire, UK
Northern Rock? Better to use the money to nationalise Harrods, and then deport Mr Al Fayed to Egypt.
Barry Pickup, Dublin, Ireland
Utterly, utterly, utterly bonkers. When this is over Mr Fayed's right to live in the Uk need to be urgently reviewed witrh a view to terminating it. We really don't need this crazy accusations against so many people which hopefully will be dealt with in the law courts through libel procedures.
Bruce Finch, Hampshire,
Why is everyone laughing at this good British Muslim?
Rule Racist Britannia!
Now I understand why tabloids flourish in Britain!
Tommy, Honaker, Virginia
Nona - I don't think boycotting Harrods is hardly a sensible idea. Al Fayed isn't going to miss the few extra pounds nor is her going to care if he does. I know his argument is far-fetched and, in some places, ludicrous but he is a father whose son died in a terrible accident. I understand that he would want to get any sort of justice for this.
Helen, London, England
I've heard this kind of rubbish many times in my long life. Enough is enough. Shut up, please, Mr. Al Fayed!
cyberstranger, St. Pete,
The various secret services of the UK, USA, and France would be able to depose of someone in a far neater manner than what happened in that Paris tunnel.
And only the one person on whose shoulders the complete responsibility for the deaths rests could come up with such outlandish charges. Of course, the employer of the drunk driver wants to blame others, but in reality only he is to blame.
If al-Fayed were a gentleman he would apologise to Prince William and Prince Harry for the death their mother.
Gini, New York City, USA
Mr Al Fayed never, never, asks the question about the speed the car was travelling at the time of the accident. Had it been travelling within the speed limit no one would have been killed.
There is absolutely no excuse for the car to have been travelling so fast. They died because of the utter stupidity of their driver. A really simple open and close case.
Martin, Munich, Germany
Does he seriously believethat the Brtitish government, security services, royal family and most laughable of all the French police and security agencies could all be involved in this "conspiracy" to kill someone who was frankly irrelevant to the affairs of the UK (and France)! The French would have blabbed on this one just to embarrass the UK! Al-Fayed obviously needs the service of a psychiatrist to help him see that if you are driven through an urban area at 90mph by a drunk, you are quite likley to get killed. The Queen and the Royal Family have shown immense restraint and dignity on this issue in the face of these disgraceful accusations for which there is no real evidence. Apparently Israel was behind 9/11. Just shows how the human mind can come to believe utter trash (but I suppose religion proves that!)
S P, Swansea, UK
Interesting the one person who survived was wearing a seat belt.
I suppose everyone else in the car was told by Prince Phillip not to bother putting theirs on and that's why they died...never mind the driver in the employ of Mr Al Fayed was too drunk to drive in the first place.
C Doran, Edinburgh,
I think this is just silly. The poor man and Diana died years ago. Give some rest to their souls! We are still talking about this, and this theory, this conspiration theory is so silly...the Future King, his father, the americans, the english the French Police, the lawyers! My God...it seems a James Bond film!
Dani , Lisbon,
Since the security services have continuously and successfully infiltrated even the Russian/Soviet security services, and visa-versa, and more and more, how can one really doubt that the security services could accomplish such a mission?
The security services compromised the IRA for many years at many levels and probably did great damage to everyone and anyone by just dragging it out so long.
Actually, laser pointers and strobe lights are relied upon in many areas to blind drivers. Even the Police and Military use them. The security services are very capable of pulling-off a caper like this one.
Thomas Clark, Portland, US/Oregon
This will become another historical debate as the years go by like who murdered the young princes.
christine, cambridge, England
The entire Diana Conspiracy industry has at its base the ravings of this man. It is he, through his paid representatives, and friends in the press, who has recycled this palpable nonsense endlessly.
There IS a conspiracy, and he is at the heart of it.
A conspiracy to hide the unpalatable truth that Diana and his son died in car crash in an underpass, at the hands of one of his drunken employees, in a fruitless attempt to avoid being photographed.
Sad, sordid and banal. That's how it ended. And that's all there is to it.
Al Fayed rakes up the embers endlessly, glowing slightly in the reflection, satisfied that no-one will be allowed to forget that when she died, she was with his son.
Hoping we'll all forget that it was the decisIons taken by him and his son, that left them both dead.
C G Nugent, London, UK
Now he has had his say, lets have Al Fayed deported.
Chris, Ascot, uk
I assume now that al-Fayed will be charged, He should at the very least be forced to sell Harrods and any other interests in the UK and then be deported to Egypt.
Albert H. Cross, Laidley Heights, Australia
Of course it makes sense can you really see the Queen and Co allowing Diana to marry a non Christian therefore the future king having a non Christian as a step father....
Never in a million years!
Of course this will never be proved we are very good at covering such things up, history tells us this time and time again.
Harry , Gravesend , UK
How can you, the British people, tolerate Mr Al Fayad slandering your queen, her husband, your future king? It was a tragic accident. Who could have predicted the outcome? No one. One person lived. It could have been Diana as well. What then? Did the Royal Family have a Plan B? Dodi might have lived. Mr Al Fayad wouldn't be interested in the trial if his son had lived. The trial is a complete waste of money.
Anna, Sussex
Dorothy Bell, East Grinstead, West Sussex
The most depressing thing about this whole sad business is that when Mr Al Fayed is eventually told that there is no evidence whatsoever for his wild claims he is unlikely to accept the decision.
John Dorman, Melbourne,
I could care less ... I have returned my store card years ago ... this man is unhinged!
David Michael, Antalya, Turkey
Ask this man Fayed to leave the U.K at once and do not him back in.
Peter Dove-Medows, new york city, ny
I'm no conspiracy theorist, and I don't have any time for the Royals (dead or alive) or Fayed.
However I have to say the first thing that sprang to mind when I read the headline was; If Blair could sanction a plot to kill 200,000 Iraqis would authorising Di's really have been such a big deal?!
Jonathan, Auckland, New Zealand
What is the point of having this ridiculous and pointless inquest? Even if as I suspect, Diana was murdered, it will never be revealed to the public anyway because it would mean the end of the monarchy and the destabilisation of an entire nation.
They should stop wasting taxpayers money.
Steven Porter, Barcelona, Spain
N.R. was in meltdown and everybody withdrew their savings. N.R. is now the only bank that your savings are guaranteed by the government. Everybody will rush back to N.R. causing a run on the other banks. The lunatics are once again running the asylum
Peter Aberystwyth
Peter Farmer, Aberystwyth, u.k.
It was expected that Fayed would be subjected to a ferocious going-over by the QCs today, but it would seem they made the judgment that there was no need to do anything other than let the man speak for himself. They were right.
Xan, Berlin,
I was asleep at the time in Newcastle when this accident happened - but I'm sure that 'Al' Fayed is convinced that somehow I was involved - after all, it seems everyone else was.
The man has no shame - as his tawdry 'monuments' in Harrods prove.
Another thing - if he was the only person that Diana and Dodi had told about a 'pregnanacy', why was she murdered because she was 'pregnant'?
Kevin, Orlando, USA
On a side note, I've been curious for a long time about one thing. Can someone please explain the demographics of Harrod's shoppers? It must be almost entirely tourists. It has upscale prices but most of the local high society I would expect to identify with the Royal Family and boycott it. One of the great mysteries.
Jack, London,
Britain. Meet your future overlords.
Barry, Toronto, Canada
Its a crazy world out there. You just cannot rule out the possibilty. obviously there won't be smoke with out fire. Common people like us can never make sense of what those people on top with power would do to stay.
Shihab Akbar, Kerala, India
Mr Al Fayed is essentially grieving in public and we should have sympathy for him. He lost his son and wants retribution.
He has paid a huge sum of money for his day in court (without fear of slander) and after tomorrow he will have had it. I hope it helps him.
The fact that his assertions are so bizarre just goes to show he wants to blame someone. The facts don't add up, but that doesn't matter to him.
I just feel it's all rather sad
David, St Albans, UK
What a fruit cake!
Kara Swart, London, UK
I feel desperately sorry for Al Fayed, as I would for any father who lost his son.
However, he needs to come to terms with this tragic accident and to move on with his life. Dragging the name of his son, Diana, and everybody else involved through this painful and unnecessary process is helping nobody, apart from the finances of the lawyers involved.
Dave, kent, uk
When will someone in Government take along hard look at this Fayed character?
From everything one reads his is very 'shady' and the way he obtained money to but Harrod's and his hotels doesn't seem to bear close scrutiny.
One can understand his being upset by the death of his son, caused by the drunken recklessness of one of his own employees.
But his continual sniping, back-biting and generally nasty comments stop Diana's two sons from being able to properly put their mother to rest and get on with their lives.
Chris Palmer, Southampton,
If it wasn't so sad this farcical display would be funny.
I suppose its best to let this whole sorry conspiracy theory die with the bereaved father, but I was the duke of Edinburgh I would be sorely tempted to take legal advice. Let's also remember that the drunken driver who killed the couple was an employee of Fayed acting on his direct orders - he must therefore shoulder a lot of the blame himself.
Ian, London,
Never before have so many been so libelled by such a wealthy one!
Chuck, London, UK
I know that he had lost his son... but he cannnot/should not be allowed to call the Duke "Nazi Racist", if that was the case then Mr Fayed/we Muslims wouldn't be living freely here in UK. He is giving a bad name to Muslims, imo, he should be removed from this country. Sorry Mr Fayed this is not on.
Mohammed, London, UK
It's quite clear from his past and these comments that this man is mentally derranged. His lawyers should be getting this man serious help, rather than pursuing his conspiracy theories.
The allegations against our Royal Family are disgraceful and I would urge them to pursue legal action against him.
Chris Leigh, Wrexham, Wales
I am of a strong belief that Mr Fayed is paranoid & what ever proof is put forward will ignore it & continue with his accusations. Even in the face of evidence from his own staff etc,it's a pity the courts could not make him pick up the costs for wasting time, instead it's us the Tax payers.
T Wheeler, B'ham, Worcestershire
I'm just waiting for fayed to tell us about the time he was abducted by aliens.
jem, london, uk
May I suggest that those who disagree with these statements simply boycott Harrods in the future.
Courtney - Do you seriously think this is the voice of reason? I hope NHS covers psychiatrists.
Nona, New York City, USA
You couldnt make it up. How long before Hollywood buy the film rights !!
Absolutely astonishing waste of money - perhaps we could nationalise it.
carol, Leicester , UK
At last the voice of reason. And perhaps some justice for Diana and Dodi
Courtney, Hitchin, England
Does Fayed's psychiatrist know about all these strange things people tell him that turn out never to have happened?
Maybe our taxes are being spent on some bizarre committal proceedings that will result in the men in white coats taking him to a nice comfortable room with soft walls....
Jon Dawkins, Bristol,
I can't believe my taxes are being used for this nonsense
John Tomlinson, Brentwood, Essex
