The former England football star Paul Gascoigne has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act after being arrested at a hotel on Tyneside, sources said today. He was detained after Northumbria Police were called last night to a hotel in Gateshead, Gascoigne's home town.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Police attended the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead yesterday evening after we received a report of concern for a 40-year-old man staying at the hotel.
"The man was detained under the Mental Health Act and no-one was injured during the incident."
Mr Gascoigne, who has had a history of emotional instability, was most recently manager of Kettering Town, but also played for Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio and Rangers. He was capped 57 times for England.
The Sun newspaper reported last week that Mr Gascoigne had been staying at a luxury hotel in Newcastle as he recovered from a hip operation.
"While there was no disturbance caused, we did receive a phone call from the police later that day," the hotel said in a statement. "Since then we can confirm that he was escorted calmly from the hotel and we are continuing to cooperate with the police."
Gascoigne was also involved in an incident at another hotel, the Malmaison, in nearby Newcastle earlier on Wednesday. Police said they responded to reports that a guest "was behaving in a disorderly manner towards other guests. "
"The man was spoken to by police and left the hotel," Northumbria Police said.
Nigel Massey, a spokesman for the Malmaison, said Gascoigne was aggressive toward a night porter when a fire alarm went off, and was taken away from the hotel by his sister.
"For 12 days he was the perfect guest, then something snapped," Massey said. "This is an unfortunate situation. We hope he gets well and comes back soon."
Under the Mental Health Act, police can take a person from a public place to a "place of safety" — a police station or hospital — if they are "suffering from mental disorder" and "in immediate need of care or control."
A person can be detained for a maximum of 72 hours until the person can be examined by a doctor and treated by a social worker.

Good luck Paul. I am an alcoholic and I know how hideous this illness is, the withdrawal, the hurt you cause to family and friends because they can't bear to see you in this condition. I just hope you get the support you need, most of all from fans who rember how good you were with football!
Matt, Birmingham, England
I hope that as a human being Paul recieved the help he needs as a citizen in uk he deserves treatment free at the piont of delivery as afooty player who held the dreams of a nation at his foot he deserves our love and compassion. Many of us have felt despair or heartache, lets reach out.
Val, Shetland Isles, SCOTLAND
He needs help now,he gave so much on the football field for his country let us give him something back.
David Ruddock, Leeds, UK
Paul is a troubled soul who deserves the very best help this country can give him after all the immense pleasure he gave all of us in his playing days and as a person before his troubles. I trully hope he finds whatever he needs to get his life back. How do we get a card/message to Paul himself?
Robert, Plymouth, England
Hi Paul my family have a history with alcohol. It is very hard to give it up, especially as you have the press watching you. Being an alcoholic is very hard, I suppose just like any addiction. I am sure that ith the right support you can beat it.

Please God someone out there has faith in Paul to help and guide him back to health and happiness, deep down he is a wonderful person and what pleasure he has given us on the pitch.

Gazza is a hero who needs help and will get it. My son is a normal kid who needs help but wont get it along with hundreds of other alcoholics in this country.
lynn, sunderland,
I have a Grandson who thinks the world of this man he has his autograph we should remeber he was and is a great man I wwish him a very speedy recovery and this can be done Love from our family we love you Gazza
Janet , Bedfordshire, United Kingdom
I just want to say what a terrible shame it is to see a man like Paul go down this route. He has the world at his feet (excuse the pun) in his football playing days. Maybe this is a result of the hideous amount of money that football players get and are able to live a lifestyle that only people with that amount of money can get. I can only join others in wishing him a full and speedy recovery for his and his families sakes - Good luck Paul
Mac, Gillingham, UK
It.s about time that he was taken into hospital and sectioned, under the mental health act it should have happened years ago,it;s old news the he was drunk again as has been reported in the news for years he will end up like GEORGE BEST.
DARLOTEL, DARLINGTON,
Gazza get well soon, like all Rangers fans worldwide I wish you a speedy recovery. You are a true football genius, you have given me so may great memories that will live with me for the rest of my natural. I'm praying for you Gazza. Lynne x
Lynne McEwen, Glasgow, Scotland
Just to wish Paul a speedy recovery, and to his family, I am sure that many are thinking of you at this difficult time. You are in all our thoughts, and may Paul get well soon.
Tiffin de Vere, London, UK
I was sad to hear about Paul but also pleased as he is in the right place to get treatment, it will only help towards freeing his demons. I think Paul will come back a stronger and wiser person physically and more importantly mentally, my thoughts are with him and any other person going through a similar crisis.
John, Stanmore,
Hope you get some good help and care, and soon on the road to recovery, wishing you the best of luck, and i am sure you would make a fab manager of any team, get well soon.

marie, st helens,

I whole heartedly agree with John. Gazza for Newcastle UTD.

Kev, manchester,
lets all the toon fans get behind the mags and gazza tomorrow against man u and when he gets better give him a position in the club with the people who love him where he comes from
wilky, stanley , co durham
We dont want to see him go the same way as George Best but Sadly the writing seems to be on the wall. Where are all the hangers on that were round in his playing days ?
Mo, Lincoln,
I hope Paul can get it together,we throw these young boys into the public eye and make heros of them but do not help them to cope with the adoration and the huge amount of money they earn and there are to many hangers on. Wishing you well Gazza please do not end up like George Best.
Janet , Bedfordshire, United Kingdom
Just to wish Paul Gascoigne a very speedy recovery. I was saddened to hear of this unfortunate incident. He is probably one of the greatest footballers of our time; we have all enjoyed watching him at his best, how about showing some support while he's at his lowest point aswell?
All the best Paul, we are all rooting for ya mate.
Lotsa love, An Avid Spurs and Paul Gascoigne fan.

Where are the supposed friends who have leached on ths poor man for so long and dragged him so far down? I, for one, sympathise with him and hope he can be properly treated and get a new start.
George Lawson, Leamington Spa, UK
I doubt that Paul will even look at this, but I am sure that his family need all the support as well as he at this very difficult time. Mental Health issues are so common, yet looked upon by many with the "stigma" that is not necessary. I wish all well who are affected by Paul's illness at the moment, especially him. Yes, illness, for those who feel comfortable having a dig - perhaps a look at self would benefit you more.
Michael, Newcastle, uk
With the recent death of Heath Ledger, the tragic downfalls of Britney Spears and Robbie Williams and now this, maybe we as a society need to reevaluate the price of this whole celebrity culture we have become addicted to.
The pursuit of fame and fortune at almost any price brings a great toll.
True and lasting happiness can only ever come from within and never from a bank account or fame.
James Currie, Marbella, Spain
Come on Gazza you are far better than this, a hero on Tyneside for a very long time. You are atracted to the wrong sort of people. I read your book and understand some of your demonds. It must be very hard to come down from the highs in your career, but others have done it. Your looking at ''the las chance saloon'' so get a grip! I've always been a big fan and hate to witness your decline.
Ray Baker, Newcastle upon Toon , UK
Gazza......It don't matter that you never Inspired the national team to winning any major trophies....coz you made us laugh, you made us cry, you entertained us with your skill and above all, regardless of your failings..... you made us proud to be English!
Ben, Guildford, UK
What an absolute shame. Can any other Englishman in the last 40 years have been as talented on the pitch as this man? Hoddle maybe?
He obviously still has problems but still some people want to have a dig.
Let's hope that he recovers soon and well.
simon , Valencia,
As someone who has a family member with a mental illness, I can guarantee you it takes a hell of a lot to get someone sectioned in this country. So Steve, comments like yours are ignorant.
He is ill and now will hopefully get help, but knowing the Mental Health laws in this country he will probably be kicked out after 72 hours and left to fend for himself.
CJ, West Midlands,
Really sad to read this about Paul Gascoigne - a great player who brought pleasure to millions with his cheeky grin. Wish him well.
Michael Cabot, Sutton,
John, surely some things are best left to be discussed seriously without pandering to the national trend of insulting Newcastle United fans. The man is ill, you, presumably, are not. Behave like a grown-up, mate, without trying to stick another knife in the collective Newcastle fan's back. We can all say horrid and immature things about sports celebrities associated with your club or city also mate, the difference is that we just choose not to.
James, Newcastle,
What with Britney, now Gazzer, I may volunteer for care in the community work if it goes on like this. Might be the best chance we get to meet our heroes.
Clare, St Ives, UK
Get well soon Paul ! You were and still are a legend of a player.
Despite what that dozy Manc. say's. Take a cheap shot while the guy's down. Is that your best shot ?? Even the good folks of Manchester are embarassed by your comment. Any way c'mon Gazza you're a top Geezer. !!
Lee, Hamilton, Scotland
Hr played for Middlesbrough too, Peter, since you're nit-picking.....
fastshow, Middlesbrough, England
Sounds like a perfect candidate to take over from Keegan should Newcastle fail to win the Premiership/FA Cup/Champions league/Euro 2008/World Cup & the African Cup of Nations within the next 6 months thereby satisfying the sadly misguided Geordie nation's overblown expectations for what a "big club" should realistically be able to achieve...
John, Manchester, England
The best of luck for a quick recovery to Paul Gascoigne. A great player in his prime. By the way the report should have said Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio and Rangers AND Everton! Thank you
Peter Price, Liverpool, England
I had no idea he was born in a hotel ...
Benzo, Nr Chelmsford,
Given all the prejudices against people who suffer from mental illness, and given the fact Paul Gascoigne is a sports celebrity, wouldn't it be more humaine to handle this matter more sensitively. I think it is quite tragic that it got to this state of affairs. I hope he makes a speedy recovery, and that no one takes the opportunity to "stick the bean" on Paul ...
