OFFICERS in Britain’s new border force have been told they should not arrest illegal immigrants and foreign criminals at weekends or on bank holidays.
To cut costs, the new Border and Immigration Agency (BIA) has told them only a minimum number of staff should be on weekend duty to answer essential calls.
Staff are entitled to extra payments for weekend working but the agency is trying to save £80m-£100m to keep its budget in line with Treasury edicts.
David Davis, the shadow home secretary, said it exposed as a sham Gordon Brown’s claims that the new agency would secure Britain’s borders.
John Tincey, vice-president of the Immigration Service Union, which represents 4,000 immigration staff, said it would make Saturdays and Sundays virtually an “open season” for offenders.
The arrangements, due to take effect on April 1, are detailed in a memo to the agency’s 1,500 enforcement staff. It says “no operational visits will be scheduled at weekends or on bank or public holidays” without giving three weeks’ notice and obtaining the express written consent ofa senior BIA director.
The new arrangements will not affect the manning of immigration desks at ports and air-ports, which is handled by a different division within the BIA.
However, it will mean efforts to track down foreign criminals to be deported, failed asylum seekers and others who have slipped past port controls will effectively stop at weekends.

What we now need is not a Churchill but a Cromwell. Read his speech to the assembled MPs before he told them to GET OUT. It correctly sums up the sitaution that we are in at the moment.
DaveP, Beverley, UK
It's not a joke.
The reason it is 1st April, is because that is the start of the financial year.

"When one considers the serial incompetence of this Labour government in almost every subject, it is hard not to think that this incompetance amounts to treason".
DaveP, Beverley, UK
Treason is what they do best Dave, forcing the EU treaty on us without our consent is also treason...but it doesn't seem to bother the Labour party, what a disgrace they are and it's time we fought back, hard. Sadly we have no one in the three main parties willing to stand up for us...what a shambles.
Where is our Churchill?
Samantha Jones, Bucks, England
When one considers the serial incompetence of this Labour government in almost every subject, it is hard not to think that this incompetance amounts to treason. No responsible government will allow in millions of people, whose aim is to overthrow the historic culture of the country.
There is darkness in the heart of this Labour government, which can only be explained as vindictiveness against the people for not electing Labour for 18 years.

Having given carte blanche entry to all and sundry what diference does it make wether they work wek ends or not.
James Fowler, Doncaster, UK
Interesting that the new rules are to be implemented from 1st April..because it IS one big joke! Why don't they just hang up a banner saying 'FREE ENTRY' at the weekends?
PaulB, Exeter, Devon
You are all quite right to complain about this nonsense, but only if you voted in the last elections. If you did not, you have nothing to complain about.
robert, Phuket,
Anyone notice when this takes effect! I think you've been had.

"The new arrangements will not affect the manning of immigration desks at ports and air-ports, which is handled by a different division within the BIA."
It is about enforcement, i.e about catching the ones already here illegally, NOT those seeking to gain entry at ports.
Del, Burnham, Bucks
I see that these measures are due for implementation on the 1st April - any clue here?
Saul Empson, london, uk
We, the people of England, require Referenda on all major issues, successive Governments have demonstrated quite clearly just how much they hold us all in contempt, and no one in the land can possibly believe that any current member of Parliament can ever be trusted, they have all betrayed us.
Our only hope, is mass peaceful demonstration, after having first voted all of them out of office!
AND IS THEREFORE , Worthing, England
Another "cost-cutting exercise"?
I have only one question for Gurning Gordon:
WHERE IS ALL OUR MONEY GOING?
Anil Chatterjee, Manchester,
Come on now! Trust them!! theyr'e politicians! they have our? best interests at heart God bless them. Havent they just awarded themselves another £160 A DAY to cover the loss of their other little perk. Economies MUST be made! We can't have the ordinary working man dipping his beak in the trough, there simply would'nt be enough for our masters and their extended families.
Topper, Tillitudlum,
So why GPs should work at weekends and evenings if it it not emergency service? Go back to 9-5/5 culture in everything including governing the country!
David, london,
If they are going to remove safeguards from our borders at weekends, it rather undermines the much vaunted message that we are a country under a real and present threat of terrorism. In which case we should relax all the intrusions on personal freedom that are in place using that threat as a justification.
Either that, or they should just close the borders at weekends. Problem solved.
Mike Poulsen, Reading, Berkshire
Why are British Governments free from prosecution for treason or something similar. T.Blair, G.Brown and their cronies are responsible for wrecking communities and causing the quality of life in this country to plummet. Brown talks about stability and we are less stable than we have been since 1940. Someone wanted for violent acts against the state in his/her own country is allowed to settle here, and could end up being a neighbour to you or me. Ilegal imigrants working for the government. I feel that my safety is more important than a criminals future if he is sent back home. I really think that we are in real trouble. If undesirables can not be prevented from clambering all over the Houses Of Parliament, how will they be stopped from entering the country.
Trevor, Birmingham, England
But no doubt many millions will be made available for the translators ensuring that the immigrants get there housing and benefits. The total destruction of the Country is almost complete.
Roger, Surrey,
We should just accept that we have been successfully and quietly invaded, we are now being looted, occupied and made prisoners of war.
Seriously though, I would not put it past Labour to thoroughly, vindictively mess up this country so as to inhibit the leadership and government of its succeeding party whichever it may be. I can't believe that a government can be so incompetent without will.
Rapacity, Lincolnshire, England
Sounds about right for this govt.
Paul, Hartwell, UK
Surely the person who came up with this little gem knew it would be a public relations disaster? If they didn't, then they are more out of touch than even I believed possible.
When are we going to employ some civil servants who put duty before political expediency.
i Johnson, Ramsgate, UK
Perhaps the Government should post a notice in Calais asking intending illegals '"please do not to stow away at weekends"....
m wood, somerset, uk
WOW that`s about right then, it is the same with Armed Forces not working at weekends. So if anyone wants to invade UK do it on a weekend or bank holiday and you will probably be able to walk right in, and then as we wouldnt want to infringe your human rights we would pay you benefits and you can stay forever.
Brilliant.? Thanks Gordon another superb and cunning plan.
