Hasnat Khan, the former boyfriend of Diana, Princess of Wales, said that it was she who had broken off their two-year relationship shortly before her fatal Paris car crash, the inquest into her death heard today.
In a long-awaited statement read out to the High Court jury, the heart surgeon, described by Diana’s friends as the love of her life, said the princess had ended their relationship shortly after returning from a holiday with the al-Fayed family in August 1997.
Dr Khan, 48, who had refused to give direct evidence via video-link from his home in Pakistan, said he suspected she had met somebody else on that trip as she did not seem “her normal self.” However the princess had denied this, he said.
His explanation ran counter to earlier testimony at the inquest that it was he who had broken off the affair as he could no longer bear the media interest. It was true that he was unhappy with the press intrusion into their relationship but he had been hoping they might escape this by moving to Pakistan, he said.
Dr Khan said he told Diana on her return from her holiday with Mohamed al-Fayed and his family that he thought she had “met someone else from the Mohamed al Fayed contingent”.
“I did not know who it was. It could have been a bodyguard or anyone,” Dr Khan said. “I was surprised when she said there was no-one else.
“At a second meeting, she said it was all over between us, but she denied there was anyone else.”
It was only from media reports following her death that he learnt about her relationship with Mr al Fayed’s son, Dodi. However he did not believe she had been unfaithful, he said.
The court heard how the pair had met in August or September 1995 through her interest in the life-saving surgery being carried out at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London.
Joe Toffolo, husband of her friend Oonagh, had had triple bypass surgery there and the princess visited to observe heart operations on two occasions – not just once as reported in the media.
Diana was “down to earth and made everyone feel at ease”, he said. She was also “very flirtatious with everyone”.
Dr Khan said he was very happy with the relationship that developed and had no problems except with the intense media interest surrounding them.

I respect Dr.Khan what he says about Diana.I agree with above comments as well. Dr.Khan has proved to be very good human being .
I just wonder how many relationship Diana had and what was she finding in them. Happiness????
I wonder if that is the right way to find it?

in england any crime must be "inquested" till the truth comes out.so why are most brits against inquest in this case--any thing to hide??
saud, riyadh,
Stella, I entirely agree with you. I am sorry that Diana couldn't find happiness with him ... he was the only man in her life with any integrity! On the whole, it seems she made poor choices when it came to men.

She's dead!!! get over it!!
Nic, London,
Dr Khan could have made zillions out of the tabloids talking about his relationship with Diana - but he didn't and he can only be admired for that. He is a gentleman in the true sense of the word. Now that he has been forced to speak because of this ridiculous inquest he still speaks of her highly. He also realized the price that people who crave celebrity pay - and Diana was one of the biggest players of the media. I have no sympathy for "celebrities" who court the media on their way up, and then want them to magically disappear when they've "made it". That's the price that you pay - sell your soul, etc. Dr Kahn could see that his life would become a nightmare if he became attached to the most pursued of the pursued. Even then he is a gentleman and says Diana ended the relationship. Who knows? Only him now...

exactly my thoughts...hes the only one who hasnt spoken out for all these years.
jigga, fremont,
When will this fascination with a woman who was not the brightest star in the heavens finish? She was dilly enough not to even fit a safety-belt in a car being driven at very high speed in Paris, so all this crap about murder and plots are a waste of breathe and time, not to mention taxpayer's money. Let he rest in peace.

So Dr Khan never betrayed Diana, he has never spilled the beans about her (until forced to do so by the inquest), and he doesn't have a bad word to say about her now.
He is the only man in this whole terrible saga to emerge with his honour intact.
