The mother of Shannon Matthews, the missing nine-year-old girl, insisted yesterday that her boyfriend had nothing to do with her disappearance.
Karen Matthews, 32, said that Craig Meehan, 22, “would not hurt anybody”. Shannon failed to return home in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, more than two weeks ago. She was last seen at 3.10pm outside Westmoor Junior School. Detectives believe that she might have set off towards the home of her natural father, Leon Rose, 29, ten miles away in Kirkburton.
Ms Matthews chose an interview on GMTV to confront those making accusations against Mr Meehan, her partner for the past four years, whom she called her “rock”. She said: “I know it has nothing to do with him. He would not hurt anybody. It is very hurtful to think people think he would do something like this, because he would not.”
She said that he had been a comfort to her since Shannon had gone missing. “I cry, he cuddles me,” she said.
“When he cries, I cuddle him. We try to just comfort each other.”
Mr Meehan said that he had taken no notice of the fingers being pointed at him. He added that the police activity surrounding the family was routine in such cases. “They do it to every family this happens to,” he said.
He added that he treated Shannon as his own daughter and that he had always got on “brilliantly” with her.
Detectives are hoping that the release of Ms Matthews’s 999 call to the emergency services will maintain the level of public interest in Shannon’s disappearance and trigger a breakthrough.
Police are digging through undergrowth and rubble on wasteland close to Crow’s Nest Park, in Dewsbury.
Officers continued house-to-house inquiries on the Dewbury Moor estate where Ms Matthews, a mother of seven, lives. The family have received messages of support from around Britain, including the family of Madeleine McCann. Mr Meehan said: “They know what we are going through.”

i feel so sorry for this family who are we two say who has a dysfunctional family i bet she was loved and care for and yes why has this family not had much publicity maybe if they had lelf her on her on her own with the door open and a bit more money then they just might
ronnie , kingston, england
Linda, this case is not getting the McCann syle publicity because :-
it didn't happen abroad so the Sun can't bash incompetent foreign police
Shannon is not three, blonde and cute
Here parent weren't all over the media making statements within 24 hours
Her parents are apparently not suspects
The 'dysfunctional family' has nothing to do with it. If Kate McCann had been a separated mother on holiday with a boyfriend there would have just as much, if not more, entirely unjustifiable and very boring publicity.
Roger Tilbury, Worthing,
Uh Dear Linda, Who are you to JUDGE this little girl is from a dysfuntional background? Are you a princess? Maybe her family is able to give her everything she needs and is happy and healthy. Because she doesn't come from a princess family as you mus to JUDGE why do you call her whole family dysfunctional. Rich or poor people all biologically have the same heart when it comes to their loved one gone missing.
D & D, New York,
Linda of Fife:
You might have more information on this case and the history of the family, but I don't believe that having parents that are divorced should be called a "dysfunctional background". I have stepchildren myself and the last thing that I would think is, that my partner and I are a "dysfunctional background". There must be many more reasons for this family not receiving as much publicity as the McCann's and I suspect that it has a lot to do with levels of education and resources, which enabled the McCann's to orchestrate the media in a very efficient manner.
Seb, Brisbane,
my heart goes out to you and your family , i have family in horbury , and by god they would nt let him out of there sight , i read the new s every day about finding missing shannon , my heart bleed s for her god love her ,i hope to god she is found soon , very soon .
mrs gill harrison, hebburn, newcastle
I feel very sorry for this little girl as she is from a dysfunctional background; because of this she is not getting the level of publicity that the McCann case generated.
