Michael Todd: fast-tracked in the force

Michael Todd began his policing career in 1976 when he joined the Essex force.

He was appointed Assistant Chief Constable, Nottinghamshire, in 1995 and in 1998, he became Deputy Assistant Commissioner in the Metropolitan Police Force.

In 1992 Mr Todd invited TV crews to join him on raids to demonstrate openness to the public

He became Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police in 2002 and would often join officers’ raids and foot patrols

His force frequently dealt with anti-terror operations and serious organised crime, in 2006 policing Labour’s conference in the city

In 2003 his force faced damaging revelations about racism when a TV documentary-maker went undercover with recruits

He once volunteered to be shot by a Taser gun in front of cameras to prove that the device was safe

At 50, he was Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police and Vice-President of Acpo, the national group of senior officers
