"Apart from one television thing, I have kept quiet for 21 months," said Heather Mills after her £20 million divorce ruling today. "I have been told that I can talk now."
She clearly did not need telling twice.
In a "statement" to reporters from the steps of the Royal Courts of Justice, Ms Mills railed against Sir Paul McCartney, her former husband, against Fiona Shackleton, Sir Paul's lawyer, and against Mr Justice Bennett and the entire court system behind him.
It was car-crash television at least as compelling as her performance on the GMTV sofa last October, when she broke down in tears and compared herself to Kate McCann and Diana, Princess of Wales. For several long minutes, the press pack could not get a word in edgeways.
Describing herself as a "campaigning girl", Ms Mills urged people to represent themselves in court – as she had done at the High Court – if they were unable to resolve their own problems between themselves.
She insisted that her parting from her own lawyers, Mishcon de Reya, had been amicable but said the firm wanted to charge her an extra £600,000 to do the divorce trial, “which could easily go to charity”.
The former model reserved special personal criticism for Ms Shackleton, the divorce specialist who represented the Prince of Wales in his divorce from Diana.
Urging others to follow her example and represent themselves, Ms Mills cited “the power of one” and insisted “the Law Courts do not want me to say this”.
“I’m so glad it’s over," she added. "It was an incredible result in the end to secure mine and my daughter’s future and that of all the charities that I obviously plan on helping and making a difference with - because you know it has been my life for 20 years.
“Obviously the court do not want a litigant-in-person to do well, it’s against everything that they ever wish, so when they write the judgment up they’re never going to make it look in favour.
“But all of you that have researched know that it was always going to be a figure between 20 and 30 million. Paul was offering a lot less than that, which you’ll see in the judgment, and very much last minute to put me and Beatrice sadly through this ... incredibly sad.”
The former Lady McCartney ended by expressing the hope that British newspapers would now be able to put proper stories on their frontpages instead of talking about "our boring divorce".
"I'm sure everyone at home is fed up with hearing a million figures that never existed."

Silence? This woman hasn't shut up her yap since this all started. She doesn't have an ounce of dignity in her and certainly didn't deserve the money that she got.
Diana, Edinburgh,
I can´t say I´m enthralled by either one of them , but thats their public images because I don´t know them personally . But her public imagine is truly unpleasant . She needs sound professional advice of how best to present herself in public . Her face alone betrays a devious , avaricious and spiteful Toxteth soul . Quite what he saw in her escapes me or indeed what she saw in him . . . . . . . . . ?Oh , maybe I can see what she saw in him . Anyway I understand the law in Israel provides that either spouse may keep 100% of what was theirs before the marriage , allowing a division only after . Ofcourse the welfare of the child is paramount . I suppose too all those charities this Mills character has devoted herself to for twenty years or so will be receiving abundant financial support from her payout . I´ll probably pop off a letter or two myself .
paul 01, london, uk
To Catie from Brisbane - Pre-nuptial agreements aren't recognised legally within the UK.
Fiona, London,
How much hatred and bitterness will she fill the poor child with as she gets older? If Miss Mills is ranting on like this right now, it can only get worse, and Paul M will have to live with the consequences.
Lets hope he spills the beans on Mills. It will all come out in the wash.
Cant wait!
Mark Olsen, London, United Kingdom
I'd like to ask which charity she intends to donate the £600,000 to? Can't wait to find out!

Whoever thought that Yoko would be the "nice" former Beatle wife?
James, Tampa, Florida/USA
Seeing Ms Mills rant outside the court in her self-righteous fashion, with avarice dripping from her every phrase, one wouldn't wish her on one's worst enemy! Whatever the rights and wrongs of the divorce (and no doubt McCartney has his faults too) surely this is a classic case of where a dignified silence would have been golden.
Ken Edwards, Sheffield, UK
She just wanted to help people and give the money to charity. But in the classic form of liberals, what she's really fighting for is the right to give someone else's money to charity! Sorry Heather, but you're no humanitarian. You're just a leach.
Alex L, Bloomington, Indiana, USA
im sure he has that in a sock drawer!
shaun cronin, vancouver, bc
No one deserves Ms. Mills she has got more than she set out for - before the marriage. Sir Paul made the mistake and oh is he paying for it. Forget the money " money can't buy you love"
Now she can beatle off!
John, NUT, Tyne and Wear
John, London - the £35,000 a year is just to feed and clothe Beatrice with some of it going on school fees. The nanny is to be funded separately by Sir Paul.
Believe me, that is plenty of money for a child. I raised a family and put two children through private school on £35,000 a year. It can be done and I would expect it to be possible given that Beatrice is only four years old.
Helen, London,
Glad she got some thing. She deserved it. Just cause hes a music icon doesnt mean she doesnt deserve anything. I mean Donald Trump was clever enough to get a "pre nup" why didnt he. Good on ya girl. No crime in getting money!
Catie, Brisbane, Australia
Good for her. Whatever she is, she has been always a fighter. `
Jane Tran, PERTH,
i dont understand why heather has so many against her. nobody knows the truth of what went on in that marriage except those involved. casting aspersion (gold digger) maybe or may not be true. people are making very rash hate invoking judgements.
now is the time for people to leave them alone. whats done is done. lots in this world are going through divorces for many different reasons. mills and mccartney are no different. pathetic how celebrity is chased by the media as if they are special. they are not.
There are far more important news topics to have on front pages and a lot more deserving ones too
Paul Smart, liverpool, United Kingdom
She deserved a lot less of a financial settlement than she eventually got, if it had not been for her daughter I would have liked to see her walk away with nothing. A devious little gold digger if ever there was one I think. I'm not a McCartney fan, but I am sure he feels very foolish that he ever took up with Ms Mills.
Linda, Fife,
i do not know ms mills or sir paul personally ... but like the rest of the british public have great affection for him and the memory of his first wife linda...heather mills is now a hate figure in the uk and needs to leave as soon as possible ..before something dreadful happens to her here....if the tabloids are to be believed ...i cannot remember anyone being so dispised by the british public ....the hatred has united all ages ...races...creeds and colours ....a truly remarkable feat since this only happens during war time ...
derek lawrence , kingston, surrey
Could she shut up and disappear. Poor Beatrice.
Penelope, Brighton, UK
After winning this judgement, Ms. Mills still has the audacity to carry on like this??? When is it ever enough, Heather? When can you possibly ever be satisfied with a situation??? Do any of us possibly have to wonder any further how glad Sir Paul is to get this woman legally out of his life? If she comes here to the US, I hope President Bush considers her for the rendition program we seem to have been running here!
Brady, Lincoln, Nebraska, US
Having been through a divorce in the last few years and having been forced to spend a lot of legal money by my ex wife there is part of me that wants to agree....but I simply fail to see why she should benefit so much - I'm not a McCartney fan and I've no doubt he's not the person his PR machine has created, but the money is his. The law has at least seen to it that the mother/woman doesn't win it all. And in future Paul, take time to stop being so stupid - what would a woman 20 + years younger see in a pensioner....other than his money!
Sean, Manchester,
21 months of silence? is she kidding? She really has no math skills or memory does she? When has she shut up?
She is showing the world who she is by having this lastest ratn on the courthouse steps. She is really doing harm to her daughter. Am I supposed to feel bad for someone who just had millions handed to them, because I don't.
Yes, We are fed up with hearing about you Heather - go away please. You completed your con and got the money.
Marie, NY, USA
I'm hoping she'll now be able to back some good radical and well-funded campaigning such as the animal rights movement and PETA now that she has funds to do so.
Sir Paul, you don't come out of this too well, but we still have to hear your side of this story.
Still, well done Heather!
Allan Thomson, Glasgow, Scotland
Hopefully this dreadful woman will now keep her mouth shut and just quietly get on with enjoying her undeserved millions.
Guy Cavendish, London, UK
How dare she blame this on Paul she's the one who has
caused pain and suffering to her own child for two years.
This would have been over in May of 2006 had Heather had
not been out to make a large settlement and get as much
attention as she could. Not once did she ever care how
much this hurt Bea and to say that now proves just what
a vile human being she truly is and the sooner we hear
the last of her the better for all. I am always stunned at
how stupid Heather thinks people are to believe her
lies. Sick woman, and the money won't buy her any
dignity or respect because she deserves none.
Liz, Mission KS, USA
Heather Mills needs to shut up and be grateful for a lovely wage for a few years of marriage. She only makes herself appear more and more the gold digger her former step children made her out to be.
If she was so concerned with her daugther's welfare she would have kept her mud slinging out of the public.
Brigid Blaney, Fairfax, VA/USA
Please, please, please shut up! Just shut up! Sweet Lord in heaven, we all are begging you... Just shut up now and go away! Please!
ferguson, New York, NY, USA
I wonder if Heather Mills will give to charity that £600,000 she has saved out her £24.3 million that she has won?
Karl Martin, Birmingham, England
The question is what did Paul see in her in the 1st place? I suppose if people were to be awarded a divorce settlement based on positive personal characteristics and attributes Heather would be owing Paul but unfortunately this is not how the system works. I persoanally just hope she goes away but I dont think she'll quit winning about how unjust her life with paul has been to this point. In this case i hope the press goes to town with her.
Dave, victoria, Canada
Somehow I am not surprised that Ms. Mills' wanted to make a 'statement' so quickly after the trial. She has been well compensated for her 'ordeal' with Sir McCartney. Maybe it was too much to hope that she would at least have the decency to make a quiet and dignified exit from the court. I cringe at her explanation of parting with her lawyers beingthat she could divert the six hundred thousand pounds to charity instead of the lawyers' fees. She would do well to remember that this entire episode had nothing to do with any social cause, unless of course, it was her own.
Pindi, Toronto, Canada
I hope Sir Paul can rest easy now, knowing that the only contact he now has to have with her is to do with Beatrice. Heather I have three words for you.....Let it be!
Rachael, Woking, England
Sir Paul's got a bargain! £23million to get shot of her is the deal of the century. She's the one who fought dirty, bringing in their daughter and her disability at every opportunity. Does anyone believe Beatrice would have done without, and that this was all necessary to secure her future? A nasty, bitter piece of work
Adam, Liverpool,
"She insisted that her parting from her own lawyers, Mishcon de Reya, had been amicable but said the firm wanted to charge her an extra £600,000 to do the divorce trial, âwhich could easily go to charityâ. "
I wonder how much of her newly acquired fortune *will* actually go to charity...
Martha, London, UK
Tony, let me help you- she instills such irrational dislike because she is the embodiment of the parasitical gold digger, with no discernible talent of her own, who sees marriage as little more than a business venture. Women like this degrade marriage, put men off getting married altogether and ultimately are a corrupting influence on society. Would that she would just take the cash and shut-up but she compounds it all with her nauseating self-pity and sense of entitlement -entitlement to the fruits of someone else's talent.
Come to think of it, Tony, there's nothing irrational about your dislike of this woman at all.
Tom, Glasgow,
You said it Tony, Revolting!
Marty, Oxford,
Charity has been in her life for 20 years! Give me strength. Plotting to squeeze others for cash and publicity more like.
Karen, London, UK
She doesn't really need all that money, does she? After all, she's got a film career she can go back to --- or, maybe not?
James Smythe, London,
I find her hilarious.
But she really ought to be sectioned.
Annie, Bath, UK
Heather is absolutely spot on about divorce lawyers and the legal system. McCartney is an idiot for not sorting this out before it got to court. Leaving it to get to the stage where things are fought out in court and the press, and lawyers are made rich, is NOT, I repeat, NOT in the interests of any children involved. This is a fact that seems to have passed both him and his solicitors by.
By the way Times - what's with your use of the word 'rant'? Impartiality out the window then?
Rose, london, united kingdom
Can't blame Heather in all of this, because Paul was a "Beatle" and a music icon...Does that make him Husband of the Year? I think not....Heather may not have been perfect but Paul certainly wasn't either.....
Darlene,, Leicestershire,
Tony and Jeremy, spot on. She just won the lottery and still has the nerve to portray herself as some victim. Shameless.
Joe, Ontario, Canada
Jeremy - What BEATRICE is getting paid? You're talking about a child! Do you not know the names of the players in this fiasco? Heather is the one getting the settlement - not Beatrice. And Heather is quite daft enough to give it all to charity & THEN blast Paul for not taking care of his daughter. Well rest assured, Paul will indeed take care of his daughter. I just hope Heather fades away. She does not merit media attention at all.
Diana, Chicago, USA
OMG are you kidding....WHY!!! would a woman whos only been with a man for a few years deserve HALF of the money hes made!!!!....must be a woman saying that....please she got way too much....
jojo, fort erie, canada
yet another independant woman living off of the earings of another man.
spor500, Oakland, Ca
Jeremy: Beatrice is Paul's daughter, she isn't being 'paid' anything, she is being supported by her father as she should be. She is part of him and his family.
Heather on the other hand, is the ex-wife.
Suzanne, Calgary, Canada
She deserves nothing at all. Their child needs to be protected and helped of course but that is different but £20 million plus is a stupid sum to do that, and any support for charities has nothing to do with a divorce, it is personal choice.
No matter how rich the husband what a wife ought to be awarded should be based upon need and not availability, or too many will simply see divorce as a means to join the gravy train. If she had the talent and was the rich one then the comments would be reversed!
David N House, Wisbech, Cambs
I ave watched the entire 11 mins of Ms Mills on the steps - and your article is completely unfair to her. She has been up against some very dark forces in this case.
Take one point : £35,000 a year for schooling and nanny. Private schooling and a nanny for £35k. Where ??? Impossible.
John, LONDON,
Heather is entitled to rant. No one dares say a word against St Paul McCartney, but let's remember he wooed her, married her and has had a child by her. He also chose not to bother with a prenup.
Yes, it's a lot of money, but let's stop getting personal about her, many of her points seem very sensible, especially regarding £600,000 lawyer fees.
Good luck to you, Heather.

I know alot of people consider PM a saint or such, but he's just a rock star. And he's the one who decided to get the divorce, not Mills. I think alot had to do with pressure from his kids. Having be a 2nd wife, I know alot of trouble in marriage can be caused by friction with the kids from the previous marriage especially in this case where everyone tho't well of Linda. That put Mills in a very tough position. I'm not saying she's perfect but I think she got shafted and then got mad and made a bit of a scene about it. I'd like to point out that a couple of the women I've seen Paul pictured with look an awful lot like Mills, so I think there are still some issues there. Just a tho't. Maybe if Stella had kept her nose outta Daddy's love life things might have been a bit better.
K Brooks, tulsa, US
If I had 400 million pounds and the court ordered me to pay 24 million to my ex-wife and last child, I would feel very, very lucky, and frankly very embarrassingly cheap. Magnanamous would ahve been a better choice.
Emma H., Ottawa,
My calculator says £725 per hour for a 4 year marriage! Not bad work if you can get it...
Chris Roper, Faversham, Kent
I bet even Spitzer wouldn't have paid that much.
Laura Roberts, London, UK
My personal on the 'lady in question is that she entered this marriage by beguiling her future husband and living a lie. PM was warned by all his family against this marriage but he took that course and it cost him dearly.
Again my personal view, is that the lady in question new prior to the wedding that it was short lived and therefore she is a 'gold digger' of the greatest order.
I would not give her kerb space as a 'street girl' based on her past history.
Jerry Jones, Portsmouth, UK
It goes to show that for some people, whatever they are fortunate to receive becomes theirs for life in their mind. If she had so wanted the lifestyle which Paul and Linda McCartney had built up through their own efforts, she should have stuck with him.
Having decided to divorce him, I don't understand why she felt unable to divorce herself from his money as well. In the GMTV interview she said, "Everyone is talking about this many millions, that many millions.. nobody ever asked me, do I even want any money?"
If she hadn't been given such an easy ride in the interview, she should have been asked, "Well, do you?" I think it's absolutely appalling that someone can be fleeced out of their life's work by a relentless fantasist working without any sense of logic or fair play, and only with emotional reasoning. God help him.
iain carstairs, bedford, uk
Love is truly blind, otherwise, how did Sir Paul ever fancy and actually marry Heather Mills? As he has a lot of money and will have even more thanks to the deal with I Tune and as her only interest is her charities, why does he not double the amount on condition that the entire amount goes to her charities.
Nat, London,
I wonder how much this works out for every moment of, er how can I delicately phrase this, 'passion'?
Bergman, Belfast,
Bless her...she deserves every penny!
Remi, amsterdam, netherlands
in my view Mills was entitled to half of Pauls
earnings from the period that they were
married - no more no less.
how much would that have been?
tony waddington, lydney, uk
Not bad pay for a couple of years work. Wish I could earn what Beatrice is being paid. Greed is so sad.
jeremy, plymouth, UK
How is it i can feel such an irrational and intense dislike for this person whom i have nver even met? She is a truly awful product of our times.
Tony, Midlands,
