Kate and Gerry McCann today welcomed grovelling apologies and £550,000 compensation from the Express newspapers over "grotesque and grossly defamatory" articles that accused them of being involved in their daughter Madeleine's abduction.
In addition to the publication of front-page articles saying sorry to the couple today, the owners of the Daily Express and the Daily Star agreed to pay the six-figure sum to the couple's official Find Madeleine fund.
The climbdown came after lawyers for the couple began legal proceedings against Express Newspapers over more than 100 articles published in the group’s daily and Sunday papers. The Sunday Express and Daily Star Sunday are also expected to publish separate apologies this weekend.
In a statement made outside the High Court, Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for the McCanns, said: "We are pleased that Express Newspapers have today admitted the utter falsity of the numerous grotesque and grossly defamatory allegations that their titles published about us on a sustained basis over many months.
"The exceptional publication of these apologies, together with today’s statement of full apology in open court before Mr Justice Eady, was the only just and proper response by Express Newspapers following our complaint."
Mr Mitchell said that he had met the Editor of the Express last October to warn him that the couple were considering legal action if coverage was not toned down.
He said that action had eventually been taken against the group "with a heavy heart", because the warnings had not been heeded and that Mr and Mrs McCann believed its newspapers were the worst offenders.
"I sat in their editorial office with their Editor," he said. "We felt that the Express newspapers had been politely but fairly firmly warned. It was implicit that legal action was always a possibility."
In his High Court statement, Stephen Bacon, the Express group's counsel, reiterated his group's earlier front-page apologies, saying: "Express Newspapers regrets publishing these extremely serious, yet baseless, allegations concerning Mr and Mrs McCann over a sustained period of what will already have been an enormously distressing time for them, and at a time when they have been trying to focus on finding their daughter."
The offending pieces had appeared after Portuguese detectives last September named the couple as "arguidos", or official suspects, in the disappearance of their daughter on holiday in the Algarve in May last year. The McCanns' legal team claimed that the tone of coverage in question implied they may have been directly involved, and that this was defamatory.
Both newspapers ran prominent pieces at the top of their front pages today, headlined "Kate and Gerry McCann: Sorry".
The Express apology read: "The Daily Express today takes the unprecedented step of making a front-page apology to Kate and Gerry McCann.

Good, it realy is about time that these gutter papers had their hands well and truly slapped, This awarded is peanuts though to the return on sales made from publishing such destructive material. I agree with the freedom of the press but these stories have little to do with freedom they are there to sell copies. How long can we allow such incorrect and destructive copy to be published the law must change.

While claiming the moral high ground over the Express group's treatment of Kate and Gerry McCann, the editor of the BBCâs PM programme scripted its presenter Eddie Mair to read out many of the groupâs most offensive headlines (19 Mar). As the majority of us would never think of reading any of the Express group's papers all Eddie was doing was to compound their felony. The McCannâs lawyers should sue the BBC and the BBC should sack all those concerned.
Brian Christley, Abergele, UK
The conduct of these Editors was frankly outrageous. If the proprietors had an ounce of integrity they would be dismissed immediately.
Peter, Cheshire,
I know we have to have freedom of the press, but if indeed these stories that were printed were entirely baseless then I feel the apology and sum awarded to be very light.
Its not right that the media can set about destroying someone publicly without reasonable punishment.
Its certainly not right in Kate and Gerry's position of losing a child.
A front page apology and £550,000 is nothing to the express group.
Dave, Gibraltar,
Have a heart. The Mc Canns tried to attract the media to their cause - which was solely that of finding Madeleine. That's their reason for welcoming the media. I see it as an avenue any desperate parent would try to follow. The fact that they have been lambasted by tabloids with nothing much to report except Jordan's varying breast size, does not mean that their situation is any less sas or that they are not genuine. Yes, the papers should apologize.
Claire Bonello, Sliema, Malta
I am ever so pleased for McCanns and wish them well and pray that they soon get good news about Madeleine .
Would it be churlish to recall that none of this would have happened if they had not left their children unattended. They say they feel guilty about this and we should accept this as a severe and permanent price for this lovely couple.
That said ,there by the grace of god go I. None of us is perfect or totally guiltless.
Dr.Abdul Jaleel, Darlington, England
Someone somewhere must know something. Maybe the McCann's should try the reward approach for informaiton leading to the return or Madeleine or conviction of those involved.
Emma H., Oslo,
They should have been awarded punitive damages in the order of millions. It is the only way to stop this arrogance by publishers who think they can get away with anything. Not every one has the courage and tenacity of the McCanns to take on the big boys of the Press.
Brian Girling, Fareham, England
This whole saga is becoming ridiculous. i wish you would stop reporting it. There is such a thing as reality. These people need to face it.
Bill McCann, Suzhou, China
Maybe the Express and other such "comics" should get back to just reporting the news instead of trying to make it.
Al, Weybridge, UQ
Although I feel very sorry for the McCanns and have never thought they had any thing to do with Madeleine's abduction I do think that they opened the door to this type of media speculation when they went so public with the case. The media is a two edged sword as we all know, and the amount they have been awarded is a massive. Could this money not be put to a better general use by being donated to a worthy charity that concerns childrens welfare.
