The mother of a teenager found hanged in her bedroom has condemned an American website that posted details of her death.
Chelsea Smith, 16, a talented dancer and would-be model from Swindon, sent letters to her boyfriend, family and friends giving details of the funeral that she wanted and clothes that she wanted to be buried in.
An account of Chelsea’s death taken from news reports was posted on the site viewmydeath.com along with gory details of the Bridgend suicide victims.
Chelsea’s mother Trudy Young said: “I am absolutely disgusted. This is the most horrific and sickening thing that can be done to a family suffering as we are. As if knowing that Chelsea couldn’t bear to be in this world isn’t bad enough, hearing that her beautiful face is on a site like this has thrown us back into turmoil.”
Chelsea lived with her mother, sister and brother. She was found dead on February 5.
Mrs Young added: “We don’t know why she did what she did, but it’s not how we will remember her. If Chelsea knew what this was doing to us all, she would have thought twice before she left us.”
A spokeswoman for the Samaritans said that it was working with web-masters to make sure that its details appeared on every page where “suicide” was typed in. She said: “Many of these gratuitous sites are run from the US, so having them closed down would be impossible because American legislation is different to ours.”
The site was closed down yesterday.
