As part of the Channel Project, Toaha Qureshi has counselled many young people away from violent extremism, including one 16-year-old boy who was referred to him by his mother.
After the teenager left school his mother noticed changes in his behaviour and the way he viewed the world. When he watched news bulletins about Iraq and Afghanistan he began expressing a desire to go there to kill Americans.
Increasingly concerned, the mother turned to Mr Qureshi, chairman of the Stockwell Green Youth Project, for help. Mr Qureshi said: “I started talking to him about whether he had a job, what he wanted to do, just chitchat.
“Over time I kept going back and told him he could do some business management training in our centre. When he came in he started mixing with a variety of people, blacks and whites and Asians, all of whom have different views on the world, as well as lecturers.”
In time, the teenager started engaging in conversation with others. “When they start doing that it is a sign they are not running away from us,” said Mr Qureshi. “He could have turned into a violent extremist but is now one of our volunteers.”
