The decade-long conspiracy theory that Diana, Princess of Wales, and Dodi Fayed were murdered by MI6 on the orders of the Duke of Edinburgh was finally and comprehensively dismissed yesterday.
In a landmark day in the six-month inquests, the coroner told the jury that there was no evidence to support claims by Mohamed Al Fayed that the couple were killed in an Establishment plot.
Summing up after hearing more than 250 witnesses, Lord Justice Scott Baker said that the Harrods owner’s claims were so manifestly without foundation that even his lawyer was no longer pursuing them. The hearings had heard not a shred of evidence to support them, he added.
The coroner ruled that it was not open to the jury to find that the deaths were the result of an unlawful killing by the Duke of Edinburgh or anyone else in a staged accident. Their options for verdicts were unlawful killing by the gross negligence of Henri Paul, the driver, the negligent driving of pursuing vehicles, a combination of both, accidental death, or an open verdict.
His ruling was aimed at drawing a line under 10 years of conspiracy theorising which have been the subject of two exhaustive inquiries and consumed at least £6 million of British public money. In his closing remarks the coroner branded several witnesses as probable liars. “One of the regrettable features of this case is the number of people who, it appears, have told lies in the witness box or elsewhere,” he said.
The coroner singled out James Andanson, a paparazzo photographer, Paul Burrell, the Princess’s former butler, and John Macnamara, Mr Al Fayed’s head of security, as liars by their own admission. “Others have either admitted telling half-truths, or part of their evidence may have shown in one respect or more that either in court or previously that they were not telling the truth.”
The inquests had served an important purpose in examining the conspiracy theory, fuelled by rumour and suspicion and encouraged by the media, in minute detail, the coroner said.
“There are no doubt those who genuinely believe this [the murder theory] to be the case and will continue to do so regardless of any verdict you return. You have heard the evidence and it is your decision that matters and not anyone else’s. You will have been reassured to have heard that Mohamed Al Fayed told you on oath that he will accept your verdict; no doubt the other interested persons will do likewise.”
On the question of motive, Lord Justice Scott Baker outlined claims that the Princess had been a threat to the Royal Family, that her antilandmines campaign had been unacceptable in some quarters and that her relationshiop with Dodi Fayed could no longer be tolerated. “Whatever you may think about motives or alleged hostility to Diana they cannot be used to prove that something untoward happened that night in Paris,” the coroner said.

Sir,
How odd to conduct the enquiry in regard to Diana, Princess of Wales death, where Judge, Jury and all the interested parties never asked for "the witnesses for the Prosecution!"
Find who is responsible for the removal of H.R.H. and you would open a can of worms that would be spilling out of control like foot and mouth disease. This witness is the "happy absentee" from the case.

Maybe....... shunned in his attempts to get a passport and by the elite of English society, he is overwhelmed with glee when Lady Diana shows friendship. She is showered with gifts and paraded in London and Paris like a trophy. Paraded in Paris in front of invited paparazzi. When she was killed in a drunk chauffer incident this man cannot face responsibilty that he neglected her safety .He has to blame sombody to cover his guilt. One more Judas in the story of 'The Betrayal of the Princess'

Hasn't this complete waste of tax payers money finished yet???!?

It is unfortunate that in all the years since the accident no one has pointed out the importance of wearing seat belts. The one survivor was wearing his seat belt and he was in the front which took the brunt of the energy. If Diana and Dodi had been wearing there seat belts, the odds are that they would both have walked away with minor injories. The back of the car was basically intact and the doors were operational. They had to cut the front open to pull up the dash to get the front seat off Diana and this took a long time. This made the car look far more damaged then it was.
A plot that could be foiled by wearing seat belts is not a plot.

Oh wonderful, the courts have concluded what everyone knew 10 years ago. How much has this cost the British Taxpayer? Seriously, a car crash 10 years ago in which 3 people were killed... in France. Look up the statistics, i'm sure this happens to a few thousand people every year in France as it does here. Why has it cost the taxpayer to find out the blindingly obvious? Mr Al Fayed should be made to pay all the court costs and damages to Prince Philip. What a bloody waste of time.

While I can understand what many say, I still get the overiding opinion of a load of "royalist" comments.
Don't get wrong I support the Marchy 100% but less face the simple facts.
The "Judge" has told the jury what verdicts they are allowed to rule thus invalidating any "independent claim" in the proceedings.
The Judge has thrown out the claim that the deaths were orchestrated by the royals due to lack of evidence and the length of time since the event has been such that the majority of physical evidence would by now be null and void.
Due to Diana being embalmed prior to arriving in the UK we are unable to say if she was in fact pregnant and so this claim is dropped not by lack of facts but by lack of care.
In my opinion the whole event may have in orchestrated but to what extent and if at all we shall never know and for 3 reasons:
1) The "establishment" is never to going admit it even if tthey were
2) The timescale is too large
3) Too many annomilies in the case
MSR, London, UK
If the driver of the White Fiat was innocent, why didn't he come forward ? Where is the car?
Why was Princess Diana embalmed contrary to French and EEC law, making any further forensic tests unusable?
Where is the proof that the blood samples used to condemn Henri Paul were his? They mysteriously disappeared so DNA couldn't be checked. C.Monoxide and alcahol levels were nonsensical. There was no hose from exhaust to car interior that the levels would suggest, and the others did not have high monoxide levels.
How come first inspection of his flat showed an unopened bottle of spirits and half a bottle of wine, yet later reports said the flat was littered with empty bottles I would like to know if Henri Paul's prints were on these bottles.
It certainly looks like he was fitted up to make him look guilty.
Why didn't the "bodyguard" notice he was "drunk as a skunk" which the alcahol level indicates. Look at the CCTV footage.
Conspiracy? Who knows? We will never know for sure.

Regarding this excerpt from todayâs online press report: âThe coroner ruled that it was not open to the jury to find that the deaths were the result of an unlawful killing⦠[and stated] You will have been reassured to have heard that Mohamed Al Fayed told you on oath that he will accept your verdict":
It appeared from the previous press reports at least, that when Mr Al Fayed told the jury that he would accept the verdict, his intention was that the jury would be able to consider all possibilities. In that case, it seems Mr Al Fayedâs previous statement to accept the verdict no longer applies because
the jury has now been directed that it cannot consider all possibilities.
Buffy, London,
It is high time an enquiry was set up to enquire why so much public money is wasted on setting up enquiries which drag on for years to establish results that have no benefit to the majority of tax payers.
It looks like just more high paid jobs for the boys.
We get rid of such nonsense and use the savings to increase the heating allowance for our pensioners. Or at least have an proper enquiry into why so many of them die during winter.
tony wood, London, UK
It was pretty obvious what the outcome would be. I won't say it was a waste of time and money but there is no way that the establishment will be beaten. I feel very sorry for Paul Burrell who has obviously had the frighteners put on him.
LBrown, London, UK
From where will Al Feyad recruit his next "mouthpiece" now the Mickey Mansfield has made a "Horlicks" of the case ?
Peter Hughes, Burnham, Bucks
Nice timing for the announcement, All Fools Day. I wouldn t want to suggest that this was conspiratorial.
This investigation would not have taken place if the establishment had not wanted it and it has concluded the conspiracy theory. The conspiracy is dead, long live the conspiracy. One does not know what the powers that be are thinking and planning, but one can be sure that they are doing both. In retrospect one will undoubtedly be the wiser in this respect, but at any given time one can use the retrospective view to inform a prediction, irrespective of any judicial pronouncements.
Henry Percy, London, UK
Unfortunately, the judge's 'instruction' to the jury NOT to return a verdict that would support Mr Fayed's allegations, and the fact that the persons he accused did not appear in court, will be used by him to show that the trial itself was part of the conspiracy.
We haven't heard the last of this - or Mr Fayed himself - unfortunately.
Tony Jones, Grantham, Lincs
Like all legends, Diana will forever be enshrined in mystique. Many people have already made up their own minds about the circumstances surrounding her death regardless of the findings of the inquest. In a court of law, it is always about evidence and the weighing of admissible evidence. Sometimes, truths will emerge but, very often, they will be obscured. In an ideal world, a just process will deliver a just outcome. But in real life, a just process will only maximise the chances of a just outcome being delivered. Diana, rest in peace. You are now in a world not dictated by human justice, or the lack of it.

Not quite sure how the Coroner can be so adamant about the Duke of Edinburgh. He didn't attend court or give evidence, all we saw was a Palace flunky in court doing his best to protect his master from any awkward questions. Not sure why the Establishment goes to such great lengths to protect the Windsors from the realities of life - like the rest of us they are only human beings.

When will the world finally let this lady rest in peace?

its taken 12 years and millions of taxpayers funds to come to the conclusion that any sane person came to 12 years ago ? Whats wrong with this country ?

Do you know anything about the English justice system? What makes you think it is not an independent person hearing the evidence? You would be well advised to do your research.

Louis, Melbourne,
The reason that the driver is not on trial is because he is dead, killed in the accident. If you are going to rush into print, at least make some effort to follow the evidence, and then you will not find things quite so puzzling.

Can a member of the royal family ( in this case the Duke of Edinbrugh) sue a commoner for libel? Is there any historical precedent?
Sam, Dallas, USA
I guess I'm confused. The Coroner " ruled that it was not open to the jury to find that the deaths were the result of an unlawful killing by the Duke of Edinburgh or anyone else in a staged accident. Their options for verdicts were unlawful killing by the gross negligence of Henri Paul, the driver, the negligent driving of pursuing vehicles, a combination of both, accidental death, or an open verdict."
Is this an instruction? Is the jury now told what they may rule about the deaths? Or is this merely "advice"? If it's an instruction, a requirement, then it seems to me the entire investigation is worthless. But then, I may just be mis-informed.
Francis Ferguson, Portland, Oregon
The death of Princess Diana is the same as the death of President John F. Kennedy. We will never know if there was a conspiracy to kill Princess Diana the same way we will never know about the death of President Kennedy. After over ten years, it is about time that Princess Diana be allowed to rest in peace and an end be put to it all. It is sad that a rich old man lost his only son but there were two sons who lost their mother and a world who lost someone they admired and loved.
Claire, Florence, SC, USA
For heaven's sake, JL Ronish! Judges in the UK are as independent as they are in the US. Just whom would you consider more independent now that we've just about exhausted all inquiries by the French authorities, a French investigating judge, a former Metropolitan Police Commissioner and a British coroner's court? And incidentally, Lord Justice is a courtesy title which does not make the judge a member of the House of Lords.
Shaun Thorpe, London,
Prejudices against titles and the reputation of Lord Justice Baker have nothing to do with the judgement in this sorry case.Enough is enough -Fayad has done his dash in my opinion.
Let Diana's sons move on in their lives for goodness sake.
Linda, Barnsley,
The result we really all expected - but at what cost to the tax payer! I hope Al Fayed will now put up and shut up, that the princes can let their mother rest in peace and we can move on with life.
Sue Shaw, Morpeth, UK
JL Ronish - No you wouldn't - you'd have an inquest - did you never watch Quincy?
In this country, the UK. We did have an INDEPENDENT person hearing the evidence. Actually a JURY. Perhaps you didn't notice.
The title Lord Justice means he's on the Court of Appeal.
Raj, Portland, OR, USA
I am chuffed this ridiculous theory will finally be layed to rest as it should have done when Dodi and Princess Diana were.
Off course it is sad that a lonely old man still mourning his son has been told it is all over. It goes to show - money doesn't make you happy! I sincerely hope he will leave it at this and accept the ruling though, knowing his reputation, he will probably never believe the outcome. Who wouldn't want his son to be in a fairy tale where his son's girlfriend, who happens to be part of Royalty through her sons, be conveniently pregnant, off which only Mohamed Al Fayed knew, with number 4, if true, in line of the throne?!?!
However, Mr. Fayed can demand all the enquiries he likes, even though the outcome was more or less obvious. Why should you and I, as tax payers fund his obsession with this case. Is he now obliged to cover the millions this enquiry has cost?
Again, a sad old man in mourning - but a very rich one at that. He should pay for the enquiry

Halleluyah !
...... and the corner 's decision is final ? or do we have another 6 months more conspiracy theories ?? now can we please see an end to this whole sorry Diana/Al Fayed media obessed circus ! 6,000,000 in public money and 10 years is enough !
Luther Blissett, London, UK
It seems that Mr. Al Fayed has shown himself out to be an utter pratt, ranting at reporters and accusing them of being involved in 'the conspiracy' . He has wasted taxpayers money to prove absolutely nothing and has tried to embarass the Royal Family and senior members of the establishment. Why? because they won't give him a British Passport, after alluding they are all conspiring against him.
Get some counseling Mr Al Fayed, and let the world get over this weird fallacy that strangely only one man believes and a few paranoid freaks are willing to entertain.
Lets face it, how would you like someone to start saying that you had links with Al-Qaeda or were funding them , and were determined to take you to court to prove it?
MJ, London, UK
Well said, Luther from London. This inquiry cost taxpayers over £6,000,000. And what did we get for our money? Lies and fantasy.
Des, Edinburgh,
There is one very important matter that has been omitted from the 12 items published having received legally acceptable explanations, still demanding rational verification.
As the driver of the car carrying the Princess's party was proven to be 3 times over the alc. limit, and expectedly seriously affected by it, and, as the Princess had her loyal, non-intoxicated bodyguard accompanying her, no mention is made in the 12 items published of how is it conceivable and acceptable that the bodyguard would -
1: permit the Princess enter the car with a drunk driver, and
2: allow the intoxicated driver take control of the car and let him drive! especially at high speed, irresponsibly.
Why is it that there is no mention of this aspect in the hearing, to alleviate suspicion of ill intent/collusion.
Why is the driver not on trial for neglect of duty to protect, escaping cross examination, receiving no blame.
This is puzzling, unexplained.
Louis, Melbourne, Melbourne
JL Ronish (below) is ill advised, a Lord Justice is not a member of nobility, rather a certain title and form of address in a British appeals court. THIS American knows better. God Bless Diana, may she now rest in peace. England was well advised, and worked as well as the US would have if we actually loved one of our Elite.
The Kevster, Atlanta, GA
Hallelujah ! Hope this entire sad media obessed circus can come to an end , 10 yrs and £6,000,000 to investigate conspiracy theory claims is enough !!
Luther Blissett, London, UK
In this country (US) we would have had an INDEPENDANT person hearing evidence in a case like this where an arm of the government was accused. England would have been well advised to do likewise. Especially since the person making these pronouncements has the word LORD in front of his name.
