Kate and Gerry McCann have called for a Europe-wide system for tracking child abduction cases across borders.
The parents of Madeleine — missing for almost a year after disappearing from a holiday resort in Portugal— today urged Members of the European Parliament to sign a declaration to implement a US-style “amber alert” system to find abducted youngsters.
Mrs McCann told a meeting at the European Parliament in Brussels that if such a system had been in place when Madeleine went missing “the chances of recovering her would have been higher”.
She said: “We implore you to support our declaration. Please do not wait for another child and family to suffer as we have.”
Mr McCann said: “This is a very simple child alert system with almost no cost implications — who would not support such a system?”.
The couple also said that the onus should not fall on parents to alert the public of a child’s disappearance. “This system will help us achieve that,” he said.
Under the system, police and media responses would be co-ordinated across Europe. The McCanns said that the first hours after an abduction were "crucial" and that the system would allow for the quick dissemination of information across the Continent.
Mrs McCann said she still had hope that Madeleine was alive. “There’s absolutely no proof that anything bad has happened to her,” she said. “There is a good chance that Madeleine is still out there.”
They also said that discussions were taking place to carry out a reconstruction of Madeleine’s disappearance in Portugal, although they refused to say whether they would actually take part. “We certainly won’t be in Portugal on May 3,” Mr McCann said, referring to the anniversary of his daughter’s disappearance. That would be remembered in “a private way”, he said.
The couple heard from MEPs today that efforts two years ago to introduce the same missing child plan failed to get sufficient support to succeed.
Mr and Mrs McCann said that they remained hopeful that their high-profile campaign after the loss of Madeleine would help to galvanise the European Parliament and EU governments into giving their full backing to the scheme.

My heart felt wishes go to the McCanns and the terrible torment that they are going through over their missing little girl i can only imagine what they are going through but i hope that the european amber alert is brought into force it is well overdue and no other family should suffer in this way
Zoe, Bradford, UK
My heartfelt sympathies go out to the McCannâs. I am a mother of 2 and I canât begin to imagine what they must be going through.
I have just been reading up on the Amber Alert system and have to totally agree with the McCannâs.
It does not have to be a costly project. After all we hear news flashes all the time on the TV or radio station when something major happens in our country. Surely the abduction of a child should be considered âmajorâ
If it was to cost the tax payers a little extra then Iâm sure we all would be happy to contribute to such a worthy cause.
At the end of the day we do pay for the police force, TV licenses and radio stations.

The Amber Alert System works. It has recovered many children quickly. My heart aches for the McCann Family. I wish I could do something to help.

If you read the article properly you will realise that the McCann's are not trying to take credit for thinking up the idea of an Amber warning system in Europe. They are, in fact, trying to get the scheme implemented. The same with the abduction hotline.
How quick people are to judge the McCann's. When will the likes of Paul, England, UK realise they are trying to prevent another tragedy such as theirs from impacting another family?
I applaud the McCann's for the efforts they are making at what must be an utterly dreadful time in thier lives. They should be supported.. God forbid such a terrible should happen to you & yours, Paul.

Amazing that Europe can pass really really important laws like waht shape a Banana must be, BUT when it comes to protecting children they prevaricate and/or havent bothered. Come of Europe get some brains and do what you should have done years ago.
John, Woking, Surrey
This is another distorted media report and more make-believe from the McCann PR machine. The abduction hotline is not Kate and Gerry's idea at all. It was suggested in 2006 and launched by the European Commission in February 2007 well before Madeleine McCann disappeared in PDL, Portugal, in May 2007.
