The body of Scarlett Keeling, the British teenager raped and murdered in Goa, was returned to the UK without some internal organs, her mother said today.
Scarlett Keeling’s body is undergoing a third post mortem which apparently revealed her uterus, kidneys and stomach are missing.
Fiona MacKeown, Scarlett’s mother, said that she did not give permission for the organs to be removed and is planning to return to India within the next two weeks to find out what has happened.
"I can't begin to imagine why somebody would want to take her uterus," Mrs MacKeown said.
The body of the 15-year-old was found on a beach in Goa on February 19. Police initially said Scarlett died from accidental drowning but after pressure from Mrs MacKeown a second post-mortem examination was carried out which revealed she was raped and killed.
Vikram Varma, Mrs MacKeown’s lawyer, said there is no reason for the organs to be taken and they should not be removed without written permission.
“I have spoken to Fiona who has told me the uterus, kidneys and stomach are missing,” he said.
“I am waiting for an e-mail from the coroner confirming in writing what is missing so I can then take it up with the Ministry of Health.
“There is no reason to take these organs, a doctor only takes a sample of an organ for tests.
“To remove the whole organ without written consent is not permissible.”
A spokesman for the Foreign Office told Times Online: “Many countries permit the removal and retention of organs without permission of the next of kin. We try to make families aware of this. But if they have concerns they should contact their consular case worker and we will do what we can to establish what has happened to the deceased’s organs.”
Nerlon Albuquerque, the police officer who first investigated the case was dismissed on Friday.
Following the second post-mortem examination, detectives said Scarlett was given Ecstasy, cocaine and LSD on the night she died.
They arrested two men, Samson D’Souza, 28, who was remanded in custody on suspicion of rape, and Placido Carvalho, aged between 30 and 35, who appeared in court on suspicion of drugging Scarlett and assisting in the murder by that act.
Mrs MacKeown, 43, from Bradworthy, north Devon, has claimed that links between police officials, politicians and the drugs mafia have hampered a proper investigation.
Mrs MacKeown has now split from her boyfriend Rob Clarke, 57, who accompanied her and eight of her nine children on a six-month holiday to Goa.
The case has been handed over to the Indian Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
