The television presenter Mark Speight left two suicide notes before he hanged himself in an office building next to Paddington railway station, an inquest heard today.
At a brief hearing at Westminster Coroner’s Court, Mr Speight’s inquest was opened and adjourned after the formal identification of his body and a report from the post-mortem examination.
The 42-year-old television star had been thrown into turmoil by the death in January of his fiancée, Natasha Collins, at the flat they shared in St John’s Wood, northwest London.
Today Dr Paul Knapman, the Inner West London Coroner, said that there appeared to have been a “double tragedy”.
A hearing last month into Miss Collins’s death heard that she had take cocaine and sleeping tablets, and suffered burns covering 60 per cent of her body after apparently falling unconscious in a bath with the hot tap on.
Mr Speight was arrested in connection with her death but no charges were brought.
On the night of his fiancée's death he had gone to stay with her mother, Carmen, and it was she who reported him missing a week ago last Monday. His body was found six days later.
Detective Inspector William Jordan, of British Transport Police, confirmed that that the cause of death was hanging, and said that police were not treating the death as suspicious.
The court did not hear any details of exactly how long Mr Speight had been hanging, but the coroner asked Mr Jordan to direct further inquiries towards the likely date and time.
He also confirmed to the coroner that he was aware of two suicide notes — one found on the presenter’s person and another in a flat. He did not specify which flat but Speight’s address was given as 8 Penthouse, De Walden House in Allitsen Road — the address he formerly shared with MissCollins.
Adjourning the case, Mr Knapman said: “The full circumstances will be explored at the resumption of the inquest in what appears to have been a double tragedy and the date will be Tuesday, May 20, 2008.”
During the brief hearing, the coroner also read a statement from one of his officers confirming that the deceased had been formally identified yesterday as Mark Warwick Fordham Speight, born on August 6, 1965, in Wolverhampton.
The court heard that he had been identified as a result of documentation found on his person and registration details had been provided by his father, Oliver Speight.

He was one of tv's biggest legends
Two weeks before his passing,
I was watching an old episode of smart
+& remembered how i used to constantly watch it.
Im quite sad and like watching the news,
So i watched it every night
Then a week on, i found out he'd gone missing.
I was stunned,
I froze,
Then realised what had happened.
Mark was my favourite from smart,
+& In smarteenies, especially the big picture little picture.
I love You Mark Speight,

Such a sad waste of life. Its tragic that Mark couldnt have used Natashas death to highlight the dangers of drug taking. He could have saved lives instead of taking his own. My thoughts go to not only his family and friends but to the poor person who found him. rest in peace Mark. Your wonderful personality will stay in our memories forever.

This man should be remembered for the brilliant artist that he was and for the joy that he brought to all those children growing up. He should not be remembered for the drugs or what went on in his personal life. A huge shame that he could not turn to anyone to talk about his pain. God bless him.

I think this is a tragedy and shouldn't be used to fuel someone's personal views and beliefs. Drugs, Cigarettes, Alcohol, its everyone choice what they do with their lives or else we'd be living in a very different faschist society. My heart goes out to his family and friends. What a loss. He will be remembered in the best possible way.

It's a tough one to explain to the kids.

Yes, let this be a lesson to all those idiots who think drugs are trendy & essential to modern life.......they are not & never will be. The drug pushers are the only ones to gain from these silly habits, this also applies to manufactuers & sellers of Booze & cigirettes.

I, at 12 years old, grew up with Mark Speight presenting SMart, and so it's still really hard to take in that he won't be appearing on it any more. What I wonder is, if they're still going to show the old episodes of SMart.

These two presenter had the rest of ther lives to live for. why do people have to find happiness in taking drugs and booze. Nothing is found in a bottle or in tablets/ power that clouds your feelings the pain is still there. l really feel sorry for the parents of these two presenter. My deepest condolence to both parents. Myself l believe that live goes on and ther to young people are together again, also at peace may the lord look after them forever.
ANN GROVES, Oxfordshire, England
Mark seemed a magnetic person and brightened up the tv no ends. I noticed his presence. It is tragic what happened to his girlfriend too. It may be true in saying that the usual bad press the news makes of people may have had something to do with Mark taking his life. They didn't help the problem. The tabloids are vultures imho and demonise too often innocent people too quickly. Some democracy.
Speight dead, government and biased news still going strong.
Hope you've found the reunion and understanding that was denied to you towards the end Mark.
Mike, london, England / A right state
If they were taking drugs then they, as stable people, were both on wobbly ground anyway. I know a few people who have taken these "for fun" and they are all mad, irrational or both. Why can't people have fun enjoying all that is good in life - there are people starving to death in the world, begging for bread and water. It feels a little like the decadence of the end of the Roman Empire in a way. Shameful really.
Paul, London, London
This news really upset me. It's now so easy to become numbed to tragic events such as these as we hear about them so often. I'm not particuarly religious but I can only hope that wherever Mark and Natasha are now, they are together and are at peace.
Laura , Cardiff,
I am so shocked to hear of marks fate. Its all too very tragic people handle grief in different ways and it seems he was hurting too much. I alway enjoyed watching him on Smarteenies with my now 4 year old son and his 'Big Picture, then Small Picture' scenes was son creative. A great loss to BBC childrens tv. May he rest in peace and his family be comforted by knowing the smiles and laughter he brought to mainly children and both adults with his creativity and humour!
Serena Blackmore, Essex,
How very sad, Sad that 2 popular people felt the need to indulge in drugs and booze to do what ever they did, the outcome is so tragic that I can overlook their error of judgment but, it beggars belief why they felt the need, that's what baffling. Drugs and booze taken together will never give a high that will last. I know this is a eutopian idea, but I hope they are together and have found peace. I offer my sincere condolenses to those who loved, respected and for the many who will miss them.
