THE estate agent who made £370m when he sold Foxtons at the height of the property boom has turned down an offer of close to £200m for his home from Britain’s richest family.
Jon Hunt, 54, rejected an unsolicited approach for his mansion at 10 Kensington Palace Gardens – one of London’s most exclusive streets – from Aditya Mittal, 32, the son of Lakshmi Mittal, the Indian-born steel tycoon, according to a friend of Hunt. The seven-storey grade II-listed property is opposite Mittal Sr’s home, which he bought for £57m in 2004 from Bernie Eccle-stone, the Formula One boss.
The audacious bid shows that the top end of the housing market continues to thrive. Sources close to the Mittals said Aditya had expressed interest in the house but the £200m price tag was exaggerated. “It wasn’t that high,” said a friend.
Hunt and the Mittals refused to comment.

Edward, I could not agree more. How can ANY house be worth that amount of money? More and more, I am becoming a fan of Robin Hood!!!
Tanja, dubai,
Turned down 200 million has he? Never mind. In about a year I'll offer him 100 milion. And in two years 50 million. Eventually we'll agree on a price.
eric campbell, harrogate , uk
Didn't Jon Hunt sell his Foxtons business because of being aware how unstable the housing bubble was? It seems he sold at the right time, right at the peak of this unstable market.
Gavin, London,
Please, we all have to commend Gordon Brown for actively supporting the property market. Thankfully he has the sense and the nerve to leave the Non-Doms alone. Paying only a very limited tax. It actually does make sense to collect from the undergrowth, abolishing the 10p tax. Brown = Robin Hood?!
Ron, Sussex, UK
What if the banks are hiding the real picture of the
credit crunch. They must have borrowed loads to
fund the last 15 years?
We're have the banks raised this extra cash ?
Mittal..., don't do it. !!!!!
M walker, Nr Bromsgrove, Worcs
it just goes to show you how much estate agents con you...
mark, Chester, Cheshire,
Those of you who think the Mittals money is made from exploiting poor people elsewhere, where do you think your own money comes from? Remember that YOU yourself make your money by exploiting anyone who is poorer than you.

Oh well here we go again..to those who hath, it shall be given, to those who hath not, it shall be taken away. This should be the saying on the walls of all banks.
victor arram, westcliff,
I hope the Mittal's are being substantially taxed.
Cornelius Vanderbilt, New York New York, USA
The Times ignores the bidder's denial of the price and instead headlines the unsubstantiated rumour, for the sensation presumably. How the mighty have fallen.
Rob, Reading, UK
Boycott US steel to protest their protectionist policies.
Steve Davies, London, UK
I can't understand why anyone with that sort of money would even consider living in Britain. Muggers (the underclass of both chavs and Labour politicians) would be lurking constantly, waiting for any opportunity to steal whatever they can. I'd chose a big yacht off northern Italy or the Cote d'Azur.
Mike, Brighton, England
Anton - last I looked Mittal was a Non-Dom. If his son can spend £ 200 mm on a house my guess is that the £ 30,000 non-dom tax is like 50 pence to you. Make him pay taxes because it is fools like me ARE paying taxes that make London and the UK function.
Dieter, London, UK
It is sad that someone like Lakshmi Mittal does not follow Warren Buffett's example to leave his children with some money while donating most of it to charity. Statistically Aditya will never achieve anything close to what his father has. Dynastic wealth creates laziness. £200mm for a house at 32!
Dieter, London, UK
£200 million and that's all you get? A tulip made from bricks!
kevin, Lincoln, UK
If you dont like living in a democracy, where you can do what you like with the money you have legally made after paying tax on it, you can always go and live elsewhere. Jealousy is a terrible thing!
Anton, Truro,
Frederick, the Mittals made their money lng before Brown, stop looking for a scapegoat in Brown, talk about kicking a man when he's down....
Ann, Coventry,
Why no pictures?
john, poole, Dorset
The Mittals show contempt to the rest of the world while the world starves. I for one will not be buying of any of their steel. Boycott their products ! How can any piece of brick in London be worth 200 million pounds ?
James Rockefeller, Los Angeles, USA
Well said Edward. Over 95% of the World's wealth in he hands of less than 5%. Individuals with billions while a million chilren die every year of starvation. The unholy creation of the free market is what's killing our planet. When are we going to wake up?
Stuart, Johannesburg, South Africa
Where do you think this lot get their money? From exploited workers in India and elsewhere. Welcome to Brown's Britain.
Frederick, London, UK
Glad to see Mittal has made his son learn the value of money. With billions of people in the world living in poverty it isn't difficult to see what is wrong with a world when one person can throw around money like confetti whilst many others starve.
Edward, London,
