Newcastle A British soldier who lost his leg in a roadside bomb in Afghanistan nearly two years ago is to return to the front line with his regiment. Lance Bombardier Anthony Makin, 21, has been given permission to return to Afghanistan this year wearing a prosthetic leg.
He was on a reconnaissance mission in Helmand province when a Taleban mine ripped through his convoy two days after Christmas in 2006. The explosion, which killed a colleague, sent a six-inch piece of shrapnel into his right foot and shattered his left thigh. His right leg had to be amputated below the knee.
Lance Bombardier Makin, of Benwell, Newcastle, said: “I remember seeing some kids waving to us and the next thing you know I heard a bang. It's the loudest bang I've ever heard in my life. My legs rattled.”
The Ministry of Defence said: “Lance Bombardier Makin has already shown amazing bravery on operations, sustaining massive injuries in the line of duty.”
In March Corporal Stuart Hale arrived in Afghanistan with the 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, 18 months after losing his leg.
