The bodies of two babies have been found in a box at a house in Greater Manchester, police have confirmed.
The grim discovery was made at the home of an elderly woman who died recently, by a relative who was clearing out the house.
Inside the box were two further boxes, each holding one set of remains.
Some of the bones were said to be very old. Police have asked a paediatric expert to carry out tests to find out how old the children were when they died. A post-mortem examination will also be held today to find out how the children died, and DNA tests will be conducted on the relative to find out if the elderly woman was the mother.
No names have been released by police.
Investigators will look into whether the occupant of the house in Rowcon Close, a 1960s council maisonette in Audenshaw, Tameside, was the mother of the children and for some reason kept the deaths a secret for decades.
A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: “The bones are believed to be from two babies and had been at the address for some time. A post-mortem will be conducted to try and establish a cause of death.
“Inquiries are continuing.”

I agree completely, there could be such tragic circumstances behind this, and the society we live in is so quick to judge. Spare a thought for a woman who lost her children. x
Angie Welton, Dartford,
What we all have to take into concideration before gasping yelling out "MURDERER!" at your monitor, is; what if these babies had died due to natural causes. What if the babies had been to much for the woman to care for. There are alot of reasons as to how these babies could have died. God Bless.
