Is it a rocket? Is it a car? No, it's a push bike clad in aerodynamic fairing.
Malcolm Lamming, of Angmering, West Sussex, uses his unusual bike for his 64-mile round-trip into and out of work at Portsmouth each day. Mr Lamming, 42, an engineering manager, flies past becalmed traffic on the US-made Lightning F40, which he bought in Germany.
The machine cost £4,000 and has a top speed of 35mph.
Mr Lamming said: “This bike gives me the flexibility not to have to catch the train but I do get some funny looks from other road-users.”

Only an extremely unhappy with everything individual needs to ask whether or not the cyclist has an unfair legal advantage. ("I hope he does not break the speed limit.") People like this are the reason that this world is so much more difficult to navigate than it has to be.
Kirk Kunkel, Chino Hills, United States
I guess it's different from one side of the pond to the other. But traveling faster than the posted speeds on a "push" bike could only engender those in their auto's that a recumbent bike with a fairing maybe their solution for saving time and money while improving their health.

Clarification for Damon, Kelso, Scotland:
35mph "top speed" of my Lightning F-40 is just what I can sprint at on the flat for a few miles. Downhill it is scary, it just keeps on accelerating, because it doesn't have much air resistance or rolling resistance. But your 51mph is excellent.
Malcolm Lamming, Angmering,
And clarification for Cromwell, Leeds:
Please rest assured I do not break 20 or 30 mph speed limits. The higher speeds are really only achievable on country roads, where 60mph applies. A minority of cyclists behave atrociously. Personally, I believe the fault lies with the rider, not the bicycle.
Malcolm Lamming, Angmering,
My pushbike has a "top speed" - so far, at least - of 51mph, down a hill in the Scottish Borders where I live. It doesn't look weird either, and cost me £240 in 1989. Still - 32 miles each way to work is pretty impressive. Fair play to him.
Damon, Kelso, Scotland
A picture would be nice please.
Pip, Southport, Lancashire
I hope he does not break the 20 or 30 mph speed limits. Or are bicycles exempt from speed cameras and fines?
Cromwell, Leeds, England
