RCA drops plan
THE Royal College of Art (RCA) has abandoned controversial plans for a £30m extension to its London headquarters, writes Richard Brooks.

Legal fees to fight the college’s case at a planning inquiry into the modernist building, due to be held next year, were expected to reach at least £1m. The RCA said this weekend that it was too much to pay.

The college, which has about 800 students and is the world’s only postgraduate university of art and design, proposed the extension to provide new art studios and digital equipment.

The scheme divided “Albertopolis”, the area that surrounds the Albert Hall. Opponents claimed the building, named the Ellipse, would spoil the view of the Victorian hall.

Opposition has been led by Sir Cliff Richard, who presented a petition of 10,000 signatures to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. John Prescott agreed to the inquiry even though Westminster council had approved the building.
