We've made some changes
to The Sunday Times

The Dalai Lama arrived in London today at the start of a controversial 11-day tour of the UK.
His trip will include a meeting with Gordon Brown, but the Prime Minister has opted not to invite His Holiness to Downing Street in an apparent bid to avoid confrontation with China over Tibet.
Beijing routinely complains when foreign leaders hold meetings with the Dalai Lama, who they recently denounced as a "monster" and a "jackal in monk's robes" determined to split Tibet from China.
Mr Brown will become the first world leader to meet His Holiness since violence flared in Tibet earlier this year, although his predecessors, Tony Blair and John Major, both hosted him at Downing Street.
He will meet the spiritual leader at Lambeth Palace on Friday enabling the Prime Minister to claim to the Chinese that he is receiving the 72-year-old monk in a spiritual rather than political capacity
“Treating the Dalai Lama as only a religious leader simply ignores reality,” said Sir Menzies Campbell, former leader of the Liberal Democrats. “There is no reason why he should not be received at No 10 Downing St.
“Many people will conclude that the prime minister is trying to have it both ways, to see him and not offend the Chinese government.”
The Dalai Lama fled into exile in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, he now says he supports autonomy for the Buddhist region, but not independence.

Some of the rantings from the Chinese on this site are comical. "Tibetan people hate those monks government? Huh? Yes, I have been to Tibet and the Tibetan people almost universally venerate the Dalai Lama anfd continually beg for photos, even though possession of same can mean years in prison.
Anna, Brisbane, Australia
By the way I do not like other courntrymen interfere our own interal businesses. You may suggest, comment even accuse of something in China but not to interfere. Do you think yourself of world policman or God of heaven? Please be cautious of your goodwill being took advantaged by spiteful polititians
Leon, Inner Mongolia, China
Mike, nottm, UK
To you it was fashionable to colonize then. Would it be okay to you if we borrow your statement and say that it is fashionable that Tibet is a part of China. Can the argument end here? Thank you Mike, I will remember to quote this famous statement in future comments.
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Jean, London, England
Love is blind, so is hate. Anyway it is not hate so much. It is just telling you that the west should mind its business. When Britain went around d world n colonise that was bad. The issue of Tibet and China is a case of proximity and historical events coupled with marriages
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Tibet was unlawfully occupied by the chinese for their own ends...so has ensued environmental destruction, genocide, torture, religious suppression...its endless. The Chinese ,by and large who write these letters are full of hate for any westerner who is critical of chinese communist party.
Jean, London, England
Mike
your only soure of information of Tibet is the wikipedia?Have you ever been to Tibet? or even to China?Do you have a friend come from Tibet?Do you REALY know the history of Tibet?Do you know what 'the Gold Benba Bottle" is?
And do you know how many people the Britain killed in North Ireland?
Steven, Tianjin, China

There is not enough space available here to go into too much detail and some postings are not displayed.
There is a good article on Tibet on wikipedia, it presents both the Tibetan and Han points of view and tries to be impartial
Mike, Nottingham, Nottm
Steven, Tianjin, China
Yes we had colonies, they when fashionable then, most of the European countries had them.
Times change, social ethics change, if you're going to remind us of the Opium wars every time we criticize China it's going to get very very boring.
Mike, nottm, UK
And it never ceases me to amaze as well that Britain, the biggest invader in human history, now calls China, which was its former colony, a invader.
Is that a kind of "British style humour"??
Steven, Tianjin, China
he calls him self a monk who in a buddiest, but to be a monk they have to leave their life behind and not interfere with country affairs. he is using excuses to convince the world to help him. if china is has such horrible government, wouldnt the people conplain.
amy, essex, England
i lived in china for 10 years now and it gives the people more freedom than how dalai lama decribes, probably more than some countries. china has more than 50 ethnic group and the biggest is teh han ethnics but people does now care about what ethnic groupds you are from they don't even asks you.
amy, essex, England
Every one has their own views on certain topics, it is waste of time critisicing people for their own opinions. I support how china should chnage its ways of ruling the country by giving its citiziens more freedom. but.......
amy, essex, England
but there are other countires are being quite hypocritical, the U.S and us England sent their troops to Iraq is also against human right. As a fellow tibetian and chinese, dalai lama is a outsider, he is not considers as a tibetian. he was exciled from china ages ago.
amy, essex, England
"The Sinn Fin Party is the acknowledged leader of the Northern Ireland"
It never ceases to amaze me what facile analogies these pro China contributors post.
Mike, Nottingham, Nottm
to Catherine, Winchester
The Sinn Fin Party is the acknowledged leader of the Northern Ireland
British invaded the country of the Ireland People.
The Brits are usurpers, and they know it.
They have stolen the country from the Irish
We Chinese support the uprising in Northern Ireland!
Steven, Tianjin, China
to Mike,Nottm.
Not like you Brits, We chinese will support our country forever. We just criticize the policies from the government. It is the verity that Tibet is a part of China, and this verity is not the policy from the government.
Dalai Lama is a good actor, he knows how to win the sympathy.
Steven, Tianjin, China
"Surely u will too if your countryman turn coat."
I support my country when I agree with its policies, I criticize my country when I disagree.
With many Chinese it seems to be different, they seem to support their country when it behaves well or badly
Mike, Nottingham, Nottm
Mike, Nottm, UK
Where is your ans to "cultural genocide". Pls provide some evidences with your answer. The Chinese do not like him (not hate) because he prefers to align with the West. Surely u will too if your countryman turn coat.
His words may be nice but his actions do not match. Thank you.
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Anyone who can answer me why there is no one country in the history acknowledge Tibet as a country? Even when China was so weak in the Qing dynasty! So do not say the western counties are afraif of China, so deny the independence of Tibet.
Dallas, Beijing,
Actually it's some Han Chinese who seem to Hate the Dalai, you never hear such spiteful inaccurate bile coming from him.
Mike, Nottm, UK
I am so disponinted by HisHoliness's hatred towards to the Han Chinese people. Tibet is the part of China, the fact can't be deny even by his Holiness. The culture Genecide is a illusion which believed by those nationalist Tibentan: Tibet culture never be so strong and popular among Han Chinese.
Jade Parkin, Oxford, UK
Dalai should be happy because the Tibentan Buddhism has spreaded widely in the west, many people in the west have gived up their believes to Christianality : that is culture expansion, and in Mainland China, there are hundreds million new believers to Tibetan Buddhisim, this is culture expansion2.
Jade Parkin, Oxford, UK
To those people who think Dalai should run Tibet as the dark age in the west are romantic, they not have ideas about the Taliban' way of running a country. Taliban is the best exsample if how Dalai and his monks was treating the Tibetans before 1950. Tibetan people hate those monks government.
cindy benson, Oxford, UK
The China's earthquake happened in a Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Perfecture. There are a lot of ethnic Tibetan victims. While most of the overseas Chinese all gear up to donate money or provide other relief help. The global fund-raising star, Dalai Lama, is touring the world criticizing China.
T Yang, Shenzhen, PRC
Yes, Chinese is also being subjected to a cultural genocide by the West,
English is more and more popular in China, and people perfer to wear Western-style clothes in stand of hanfu!
May be one day The times will writen is chinese, this is my hope!!!
qiu guoquan, wuxi, China
to mike: this dalai, the son of two farmers is the 14th dalai. every dalai needs the permit from the central government before he got the power since 700 years ago. Scotland has it's own leader voted by Scots. 14th dalai was decided by central government. see the difference with 'legitimacy'?
ran, york, uk
The Dalai Lama's conception of autonomy is ridiculous. Think what if the Pope in Rome claims the same autonomy for Italy, France, Spain, Poland and many other places under his God-kingship and kicks out all non-Catholic residents. Don't understand why the Brits seem crazy for this "simple Monk".
LX, Beijing, China
Stefan, Milan
People in Falun Gong are also Chinese, they were trying to disturb the Fund raising for the earth quake in New York. Most likely, some other Chinese could not understand why there is no sympthy from them, anger sparks. Do not tell me if you do not do the same if happened in Italy.
Jinyu Ni, Sydney, Australia
we have seen what the communist party is capable of even outside of China, it was just yesterday that some thugs have beaten falun gong people in New York city, it was during the london relay that the blue smurfs took over the metropolitan police, today that the same people comment on this newspaper
stefan, milan, italy
to mike, nottm,uk : mike, u should go to convince Gordon Brown 1st and then to UN, before u posting here saying " Dalai Lama is d legitimate tibetan leader " mike , are u allright ??

Scotland has it's own parliment with limited powers but Scotland is still part of the UK, look on Wikipedia for more details.
Mike, Nottm, UK
D D.Lama claimed :"Cultural Genocide?" He also claimed he was asking for greater autonomy not independence.
Mike, Please define this big word and explain to us what he meant by autonomy not independence.
My brother Agus n I await your answer.
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
to mike, nottm,uk : suppose china is occupying tibet ! SO WHAT ??????? asking trouble ????
agus chandra, jakarta, indonesia
Mike Nottm , you should become UK`s next PM and then u could meet this " peace " Guy at no 10 ?? hahahahahaha.
agus chandra , Jakarta, Indonesia

China calls the Dalai lama a seperatist but the Chinese invaded Tibet and occupied it by force.
The Dalai Lama is the legitimate Tibetan head of state, the Chinese are occupiers.
Mike, Nottm, UK
Lim
If you want to know about the number of deaths look on the internet, there are plenty of sites but since you won't believe anything accept the offical Chinese figures there's not much point is there?
Mike, Nottm, UK
If Dalai's visit is really just as a monk and does not involve any politics, why China becomes the target of so many countries? It seems somebodys aim has been achieved. I don't know him and all I know is that China suffers because of him.
peggie, hangzhou, China
The Dalai Lama is the acknowledged leader of the Tibetan People.
He is no less this, simply because China invaded the country of the Tibetan People.
The Chinese are usurpers, and they know it.
They have stolen the country from the Tibetans.
Catherine, Winchester, England
Mike, Nottm, UK
To d US superpower, Osama is a terrorist
To China, d Dalai Lama is a separatist.
So d West can give accord to the separatist n expects China not to support Osama. Anyway China does not interfere in others affairs. But she expects others to respect hers. Yes the west is a shame.
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
To let a monk rule the country? Why don't you Brit let the bishop live in No.10?? Just like the middle age?
Dalai Lama is a good actor. Please visit Tibet yourself before you say anything.
Steven, Tianjin,
Mike, Nottm, UK
You seems to know so much about Tibet and Tibetan history why don't you provide the answers. Tell me how many Tibetans died as a result of the invasion and during the cultural revolution. What was the Tibetan population then?
Good grief. You don't really know. do you?
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
From 1911 to 1950 Tibet was a fully independent country and before this it had governed itself, the Chinese only having had a strong influence in the 18th century.
Since the Chinese invasion how many Tibetans have died as a result and the subsequent disaster of the 'cultural revolution' ?
Mike, Nottm, UK
"autonomy for the Buddhist region"???Why don't you Brit let the Pope take the Queen's place?
It's incredible that let a monk rule the people, just like the middle ages in Europe.
Steven, Tianjin, China
Now chinese is suffer from the disaster ,as a chinese ,he still have mood to continue his tour, if he really love other country ,please stay there, and never come back.. we are not welcome him ........
Elain, Beijing, China
maybe, we should think positively about the Dalai Lama's tour, the Dalai Lama visited overseas these past few months, just as religious leader, instead of becoming the representative from Tibet. and, i think, China don't have any authority to forbid their citizens to visited other country, formally.
elisabeth, Bandung, Indonesia
I would like to see the Dalai Lama invited to a banquet at Buckingham Palace, treating him as what he really is, an exiled Head of State. I would also like to see Britain recognise the Tibetan Governemnt in Exile and stop kowtowing to Beijing and conniving in its illegal occupation of Tibet.
Paul Mostyn, Manchester, England
Everyone knows Gordon Brown won't meet the Dalai at No 10 because he's afraid up upsetting the Chinese government.
One would have hoped that our prime minister would have showed little more backbone
SHAME
Mike, Nottm, UK
Many people will also conclude that this is another weak decision by Gordon Brown, cowing to the Chinese oppressors and placing politics and profit before principles.
Kevin, Leeds,
