The Dalai Lama arrived in London yesterday to begin a politically sensitive 11-day tour of Britain, delivering his first lecture a safe diplomatic distance from Downing Street.
Having been snubbed this week by all but one German minister, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet was received with more affection at his first engagement in the City of London. He arrived in a silver Mercedes to receive an honorary doctorate from London Metropolitan University.
During his visit he will meet the Prince of Wales, David Cameron, the Tory leader, Nick Clegg, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, and the Archbishop of Canterbury. He will discuss China’s human rights record in Tibet in evidence to the Commons Foreign Affairs Committtee and will deliver talks in Nottingham and Oxford.
However, unlike on his previous trips, No 10 is absent from his itinerary. Instead, Gordon Brown will meet the Dalai Lama at Lambeth Palace on Friday, prompting accusations that the Prime Minister is kowtowing to China by underplaying the leader’s political role.
Yesterday, the Dalai Lama entertained the audience at the Chartered Insurance Institute’s Great Hall with tales of his early education, delivering a message that featured little direct criticism of the economic superpower.
Apologising for his “broken English”, the 72-year-old said: “In Tibet, although the Chinese Government is helping modern education, but then, as you know, the totalitarian system is very one-sided, and every field is much politicised.”
He reserved special praise for ten Tibetan students. “His Holiness means everything,” said Tseten Dor-jee, 23, who is studying law and international relations. He added that he was disappointed that Britain and Germany had ignored the political potential of the leader’s visit. “He is not boycotting the Olympics, he is not treating China as the enemy, so I’m sad that leaders are reluctant to meet him in that [political] capacity.”
John Scott, the university chaplain, said that it was impossible to meet the Dalai Lama without acknowledging his political significance: “You cannot separate the two [the political and the spiritual], but the grace and charity he demonstrates shows [that] you really have to roll with the punches.”

Kuan Yan.
I draw conclusions by experience in universities. I have met plenty of chinese students and non seem to have any thoughts or original ideas of their own generation or making. I help chinese with faulty English. I also help to develop critical thinking. That is the biggest obstacle of all.
Colin, Carmarthen, U.K.
And how a simple monk can bring such amount of media attention .... Let's open our heart together and we might be able to understand what Dalai Lama's real message.
Anna, Brighton,
To Colin, a simple logic, if you are not a Chinese young, how can you know we are not thinking on our own? How can you draw such conclusion and based on what? How many people on earth can actually say that they are not effected by media? I am saying, where is yours then?
Kuan Yan, Hoofddorp, The Netherlands
The British people may have to think what UK can get by supporting the Dalai Lama's cause. Actually UK is no longer a world power that is able to set an agenda for China. PM Brown's lip service to the Dalai Lama can only encourage his day-dream and generate more chaos and blood.
Andy Lau, Hong Kong / Beijing, China
i feel too tired to talk about tibet with westerners recently. they are simply brainwashed by the medias. so, i can only say: tibet was, is, and will always be a part of china. but china should learn how to make a good pr with western medias from dalai. why can china be stronger and stronger? learn
ran, york, uk
I have no interest in 'bashing' China or ‘demonizing' the Chinese people especially after the earthquake tragedy but basically China invaded Tibet and occupied it by force.

Tibet is an occupied colony of China
Mike, Nottm, UK
John, Hong Kong.
Western comment does not pretend or presume to have the high moral ground. Perhaps if we were using Mandarin, then our language would also sound broken. It is the strength of ethical judgement and soundness of argument that is the issue here not the medium of communication.
Boris, Belgravia, London
In China's history, there has been dozens of Dynasties ruled by different ethnic groups.
Tibet has been one part of China since 1240 when Kublai Khan's army reached Lhasa and forced Tibet to surrender. Yuan Dynasty sent garrison troops to Tibet and set up post stations between Beijing and Tibet.
yao, Chongqing, China
1912~1949: During the chaos of this period, the British encouraged Tibet to declare independence. (This is the where the idea of "Tibet Independence" originated from.) A number of treaties were signed by the British and the Tibet government, the ROC government never recognized them.
yao, Chongqing, China
I find it is funny to see that so many western people intend to believe words intead of evidents. Since when the charge can be built on hypothesis or rumor? No one here support the Chinese government but China as a whole. Any separatists are not allowed. It is just that simply.
Kuan Yan, Hoofddorp, The Netherlands
I have an 'English' sounding name and speak in broken English , but I still want to speak out against western prejudice. It is time for your guys to stop using Tibet issue to bash and demonize Chinese people. We treat minority far better than your guys. Don't pretend to have high moral ground.
John Wang, Hong Kong, China
Hello Jg,
Undoubtedly, Tibet used to have a feudal society based on anarchy political system. This are the pros and cons of every society even countries like Britain are not exception to it. I suggest you to read ' My land and My people' by His Holiness. Otherwise I can send you copy if you want....
Tseten, London, UK
I wonder how much do people know about Tibet when they shout 'free tibet', or support Da Lai? Do you know the history of Tibet? Do you know where Tibet is? Do you know there are 56 different ethnic groups in China, and Tibet is only one of them? Don't let prejudice insult and blind your intellegence
David, London, UK
I find it absolutely amazing that so many young chinese people still obediently support their official government line. Where is your own young persons culture quite apart from these old grey men? In a healthy society young people always have a voice that they invent themselves. Where is yours??
Colin, Carmarthen, U.K.
The Dalai Lama was recieved in 10 Downing Street by both
John Major and Tony Blair despite the Communist Chinese
Governments displeasure. It is an appalling comment on
how spineless the current Prime Minister has become that
he is not prepared to extend the same courtesy this time.
Bryan Frasi, London, U.K.
Chinese organised anti-Dalai Lama or Chinese brainwashing? All the negative comments here can be blown away with a pea-shooter.
Allow the Tibetans a choice to have their religion and cultural differences recognised. Let the resource wealth in Tibet improve conditions for Tibetans.
Keith Lawson, Poole, UK
What's interesting here is how many comments, allegedly from readers in the UK with very 'English' sounding names, are expressed in broken English that matches almost exactly the comments from Chinese readers. A healthy degree of scepticism is clearly required
Jean, London,
I can´t believe the comments I´m reading here! The Dalai Lama is a fantastic and peaceful man! I think he should be treated with the greatest respect.
Johanna, Stockholm, Sweden
It's just because have yours view of the important overshadowed by the trivial. Please learn the history first.
Zoe , London,
The less heard Dalai, the better!!!
Where is Dalai, where is division.
Where is Dalai, where is trouble.
Where is Dalai, where you see fake Buddhism.
At this very moment, he should comfort and support earthquake victims, at least many of them are Tibetans.
Liz, Warringhton, UK
This is really ridiculous. You mean we are all employed directly by "the Party" with one click from the computer in our home, office or bar? Millions of Chinese live in USA, France, Malaysia etc. Millions of students in China speak fluent English and can log onto thousands of English web sites.
Li Ming, Nangjing, China
Dalai Lama didn't even mentione the earthquak happend in Sichuan province China, where some Tibetan dead in this disaster when he gave speechs in Germany - does he really care about the Tibetan? Not really, he cares about the power he lost. But, for sure, he is going to adjust his PR strategy soon.
Zoe , London,
The Dalai Lama is a failed warrior rather than a simple monk. British media ignored the fact that he was the leader of armed resistance, backed by CIA, against China in the 60s and 70s. And, on the other side, how can a "simple monk" be a "God-king"? Is there any chair in this world for a "God-king"?
LX, Beijing, China
people always are ignorance, they can been decieved easily by someone.do you believe what Dalai have said without learning the truth pesonally?
cherry, beijing, china
I don't know what to say. There is still a huge gap between you and us.How much do you know about China. We study your history and custom. But communication and comprehension are the things between both sides.
Wenchuan, Sichuan, China
China should be cut down to size. The re-instatement of a sovereign Tibet would pave the way for other invaded nations to reclaim their own countries. The Dalai Lama is a very brave man to stand up and defy these people. Good luck to him and his nation.
Colin , Cambridge, UK
Mark, Haywards Heath, UK
I agree. You are right that these chinese postings are 'employed directly by the party.' According to the BBC News, today. The CCP is running a counter the Dalai Lama campaign right now including pressure on our UK government.
It is the same bad game they always play.
Boris, Belgravia, London
Dalai Llama for world president?
Mark, London, UK
The Dalai Lama preaches peace in the world and advocates
reconciliation whereever there is confrontation. Although Tibet
was an independent country occupied by China,he still always
extends friendship to China.
Kelsang Frasi - A Tibetan in Britain
Kelsang Frasi, London, U.K.
I swear the Chinese on here, and elsewhere on the net are employed directly by "the Party" to counter international bad opinion of the Chinese Nation, similiar to the scientologist technique of fair game.
There's no oil in Tibet, like Mugabes Zimbawwe. Why would we act and at this late stage?
Mark, Haywards Heath, UK
Chinese Student, Beijing, China
China invaded an independant Tibet and still occupies it. If anyone is gulity of an imperialist colonial policy in this case it is China
Mike, Nottm, UK
China and the world have a choice between repression and violence of the past, or the possibility of renewal and hope embodied by the Dalai Lama and a positive future after the Olympics.
Paul Judges, York, England
why he blames Chinese Government because they built school and taught Tibetans Chinese? and he called this cultural genocide... He always describes himself as "a simple Buddhist monk", but of course he is not, rulership is what he really concern about.
Enoch, Leicester, UK
Wow, some of the comments here just go to prove what a different story the Chinese people are being told about Tibet than the rest of the world. Respectfully suggest that you listen to what Tibetans want rather than your government - but ofcourse your government would never allow that.
Amy, London, UK
Given that areas of China that were affected by the earthquake are areas that the Dalai Lama claims to be part of Tibet and many ethnic Tibetans live. Why isn't he doing anything to help? The earthquake didn't even deserve a mention yesterday.
Lara, Manchester,
That the Dali Lama is very charming is plain to see but as pointed out in these comments before 1959 Tibet was a brutal serf system governed by the Dali Lama where 5% of the population ruled and the other 95% were illiterate and slaves.
Why did the Dali Lama not change this when he has the chance?
joe, Edinburgh, Scotland
This is really a insult to the global 1.4 billion Chinese people!
Tibet issue is the product of imperialist clonial policy and the product of the last cold war. It is a shame that 50 years later, some people in the west still try to force 1.4 billion Chinese to swallow the past humiliation!!
Chinese Student, Beijing, China
The Dalai Lama as political leader of Tibet should be afforded the full honours due to a visiting head of state. If Gordon Brown cannot do the proper thing, then I am sure that, David Cameron, Nick Clegg and others will receive him in UK parliament with the recognition and dignity that he deserves.
Boris, Belgravia, London
This great guy has really got the Chinese rattled. Good luck to him and his people both inside and outside Tibet. Given the global history of communism so far, the CCP will soon collapse. Then the small nations will be able to return and govern their own countries.
Colin , Cambridge, Wales
Such a extremely artifical politician - wearing a religious & cultural jacket - why does't start with talk about the human right record in Tibet when he had the complete leadership there?? He never even menioned the state of slavery the people WERE in.
Zoe , London,
The comments here just demonstrate the great reserve we should have for this man. He preaches compassion and unity, for those that think he doesn't read just a little bit of Buddhism to see.
Not like the hate and anger demonstrated by comments here.
Listen to the man for the truth!!!
Kevin, Durham, UK
I can´t believe the comments I´m reading here! The Dalai Lama is a fantastic and peaceful man! I think he should be treated with the greatest respect.
Johanna, Stockholm, Sweden
What he can bring is only the chaos!!
daniel, shanghai, China
essentially, dalai lama is a god-king. that should never have been adopted by the modern society. let's see how many 'donation' he can get from british goverment (or british taxpayers?)
ran, york, uk
I just want to know what is the moral benchmark of Britain politicians? Do you really know the real liives of commons during Dalai' s reign in Tibet? Do you really know the past and nowadays of Tibet? Are you welcome to the slavery in Tibet? Is this your democracy??
jg , Shanghai,
Tibet has been one part of China since hundreds of years before, Not only after the China Communist hold the govenment. If your really know the history of Tibet, you should know the Dalai Lama is an official rank appoint by Chinese Emperor. How to prove it is not belong to China????
jg , Shanghai, China
Let's see what Dala 14th can bring the benefit to Britain! Let's be enemy with Chinese goverment and 1.3 billion Chinese. Why are we Britian and British goverment wasting time on this politic evil Monk for?
tony, ldn, uk
