Chelmsford Two teenage boys, aged 13 and 16, were found guilty of killing a woman and throwing her body into a river.
Alexander Young and Lewis Hayward attacked Helen Maughan, 24, after drinking all day, a court heard. Miss Maughan was beaten and then indecently assaulted before being thrown into the river in Colchester, Essex, in May last year. Her body was found two days later.
Young, now 17, was found guilty of murder at Chelmsford Crown Court. Hayward, now 14, was found guilty of manslaughter. Both teenagers, from Colchester, had denied murder. Sasha Wass QC, for the prosecution, said that the teenagers killed Miss Maughan after a chance meeting with her at 11pm, after she had been drinking.
A pathologist found 22 injuries on Miss Maughan’s body. Postmortem tests showed that she had drowned after suffering head injuries.
Ms Wass said that the boys had blamed each other when questioned by police, but that they had bragged about what had happened to friends. Sentencing was adjourned until June 20.

Wilson abolished hanging and punishment at schools. Despite what the so-called experts say if children are not controlled early then you create the present situation. The old adage, when we had controls, would be still valid today, if applied. "Spare the rod and spoil the child".
R H W, Guildford,
When will the Judges decide to set an example to other CHILDREN and give out a strong sentance. The reason we have a society where youths are out of control, is because they see it occuring in the media and then the joke sentances given out. Or do we consider our children to be stupid ?
Steve, Cardiff, Wales
Where were their parents when these morons were out drinking all day. I would like to think that the sentences handed down will be harsh, but i doubt it. Our justice system does not take the victim or the suffering of the families into account.
Hamad Lone, London, England
I would be amazed if they are not both out and about within four years at the most. This disgusting, cowardly murder will do wonders for their street cred.
Tom Welsh, Basingstoke,
They are not humans and they do not deserve any human rights or legal protection. What is the point to keep them, feed them and cloth them in jail? As soon as they are out they will offend again and again? For such idiots only death penalty is solution.
Savo, London, UK
bring back the death penalty!!!!
kids do not respect the law and their elders and worse they have no fear of the consequences of their actions...WHY? their lives will not be that bad being in jail, watching a bit of tv now and again, fed and watered etc etc..also bring back chain gangs!

What on earth is wrong with many of the young people in this Country ,and why is no one in authority really seeming to care ?.
What will the courts do ?. Probably jail them for 10 years , when really they deserve to be hung.
Steve, London, UK
Now we know what the future holds after the disappearance of our patrolling police force - bobbies on the beat. The psychology of these young criminals was one of secure confidence that they would not be observed by anybody.
Edmund Burke, Kingston upon Thames, England
«Both teenagers (...) had denied murder» Are they plain stupid or just playing with words? The woman was dead. Their acts resulted in a death. They are BOTH muderers.
Parents and authorities should educate people to avoid prison. It's out of fashion but it would be a good principle.
Rui, Lisbon, Portugal
totally disagree, children follow what our leaders parents and celebs,do and say they are aproduct of the society called britain, in my view they are heros and its amiracle, that so many cast aside the mentors they have been given and chosen a differant life journey.

These thugs will probably get 4 years in a youth prison before having their names changed and a new identity. That with all the help they will receive for their obvious traumatic upbringing will show they are the real victims and the poor woman who was murdered just collateral damage.
joe, Edinburgh, Scotland
The reason why our young people are so violent is simple.
Our incompetent leaders have made it impossible to punish bad bahaviour in our children.
Britain is a country where the mice( CHILDREN) are no longer afraid of the cats(AUTHORITY).
Tread British streets with extreme caution.
esward leigh, wigan, england
By the law of common purpose, they should be both guilty of murder. Let us hope they receive a very long minimum custodial sentence. 60 years ago they would have been rightly hung. What has happened to Britain's young?
