Mrs Spencer said: “The boys go to the youth club most Fridays. Last Friday they came home and later two policewomen came round.
“The officers made it sound as though they had held up the youth club and I told them that if they had done anything wrong they would be for the high jump.
“The officers were satisfied that the weapons were cheap plastic ones and they left, and I thought that that was the end of it.
“I asked the boys what they had done and they said they put on the masks and burst into the club singing the 007 theme tune and doing commando rolls.
“Everyone at the club was rolling around laughing and the vicar knew who they were and told them to leave. On the way home a motorist reported them.
“The police came round and none of us had a problem with that because they had to check it out.”
After being summoned to the police station with Liam, Mrs Spencer refused to accept an official caution for her son.
“They were talking about taking Liam’s photograph and his fingerprints,” she said.
“I refused to accept the caution because I didn’t want Liam to be labelled a criminal when he’s not. In the end they released Liam without charge.
“The police were interfering in something that should be nothing to do with them.”
Luke’s father, Steve Johnson, a stone mason, said: “Had the police left it alone after visiting on Friday night I would have been happy with that.
“We don’t disagree that guns are dangerous but these kids were just playing around. These guns cost 99p from Poundland and the boys are not criminals.”
Chief Inspector Jonathan Stratford, of Yeovil police, maintained that his officers did the right thing.
He said: “Many of the guns are very realistic and we cannot take the risk that they are fake when we are called to an incident.
“Parents need to be aware that there could be serious consequences if their children are seen carrying an imitation firearm in a public place.
“People have to realise how serious this problem is and stop it.”
He said that members of the public carrying imitation firearms were putting themselves at risk because officers might deal with them as if the weapons were real.
