Gainsborough Pig racing, bee keeping and cheesemaking were on offer for the thousands who attended the third Open Farm Sunday at hundreds of farms throughout the country. The events formed part of an initiative organised by the Linking Environment and Farming organisation. The National Farmers Union also supports the scheme.
At Uncle Henry's Farm, in Gainsborough, the farmers Steve and Meryl Ward had laid on pig racing for the crowds who then went on to enjoy barbecued products sourced from the racing animals' relatives.

I can assure you that on farms in this country, that have livestock, the majority are part of the freedom foods scheme- run by the RSPCA. We keep pigs indoors in barns in which they do not merely just " eat and stand in their own excretement" Whats more they have shelter from adverse conditions.

Pig racing is very cruel. Pigs are sensitive creatures who need a quiet environment. This racing is totally unecessary. The RSPCA and Animal Aid condemn it. There is to be a petition in regard to bringing in legislation to stop this racing on the No. 10 website.

Is there a collective noun for those who first exhibit their contempt for their animals by making them race for the hysterical mob? how juvenile are these supposed countryside protectors? If they allowed the animals to do more than eat and stand in their own excrement for the rest of the time ...
M Stoneman, Suffolk, Britain
I was at the farm you reported here and it was a gret day out, made better by your photographer who was a cheerful, happy, enthusiastic guy and was a hit with the pigs! great report and photo, well done!
Rebecca Bowen, Penkridge, UK
I agree, they must be really juvenile...
