Among those to be recognised from the arts and media world, the cartoonist Gerald Scarfe is appointed CBE.
Mr Scarfe, 72, has been a political cartoonist and illustrator for The Sunday Times for more than 40 years and is famous for his grotesque portraits of politicians as well as for his work with the rock group Pink Floyd.
Another artist, David Shepherd, 77, one of the world’s most outspoken conservationists and famous for his paintings of wildlife, has also been appointed CBE.
Lord Rogers of Riverside, 74, the architect famed for his modernist designs, becomes a Companion of Honour. His projects include the Millennium Dome, the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Lloyd’s building in London. He has also been chosen as the architect of Tower 3 at the World Trade Centre site in New York.
Monica Mason, 66, director of the Royal Ballet, becomes a dame. At the age of 16, she joined the Royal Ballet as the youngest member of the company and rose to become a principal dancer in 1968.
Margaret Drabble, 69, whose novels, including A Summer Birdcage and Jerusalem the Golden, have enjoyed critical acclaim, is also appoined DBE. She once admitted to an “antiAmericanism which has become almost uncontrollable – it possesses me like a disease”.
The author and screenwriter Lynda La Plante, 62, best known for the hit TV series Prime Suspect, starring Helen Mirren, has been honoured as a CBE.
Maria Thorpe, 81, wife of Jeremy Thorpe, the former Liberal Party leader, and co-founder of the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition, is appointed CBE for services to music.
There is a knighthood for Mark Elder, 61, conductor and music director of Manchester’s Halle Orchestra.
Michael Nyman, 64, the composer of minimalist music, pianist, librettist and musicologist, is appointed CBE. He wrote the score for the 1993 award-winning film The Piano.
