Even for one of the world’s greatest divas it was a bravura performance. Fury, pity, anger, emotional blackmail and tears – the whole gamut of supermodel emotions that has made Naomi Campbell the darling of the catwalk.
But her violent tantrum on a British Airways jet after a bag was mislaid during the Terminal 5 debacle was surely the most dramatic of her now infamous “Streatham Strops”.
Yesterday Campbell, 38, pleaded guilty to kicking and spitting at police officers after flying into an uncontrollable rage on board a flight from Heathrow to Los Angeles in April Campbell had ordered Captain Miles Sutherland to get off the aircraft and look for her suitcase personally, holding up the flight for almost an hour. When cabin crew eventually called police to remove her she refused to disembark and claimed she was targeted because she is black.
The model pleaded guilty at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court, West London, to two counts of assaulting a police officer, one of disorderly conduct likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress and using threatening, abusive words or behaviour to cabin crew.
She was ordered to carry out 200 hours’ community service, pay compensation of £200 each to the two police officers she assaulted and £150 to Mr Sutherland, and fined £2,300. British Airways is understood to have banned the supermodel.
Melanie Parrish, prosecuting, had told the court that after Campbell was told about her luggage she was heard to say on her phone: “They have lost my f***ing bags, get me another flight, get the press, get me my lawyer.”
When Captain Sutherland tried to explain her options, Campbell snapped: “How dare you tell me what my options are? You are not leaving until you find my f***ing bags.” As he walked away, Campbell shouted: “You are a racist.”
A cabin services director and a BA operative trained to deal with difficult situations were called to the aircraft but had little success. “Miss Campbell was clearly upset and explained to them the reason why this was so awful for her was that she was contracted to wear a particular Yves Saint Laurent outfit on a US chat show and it was in the bag,” Miss Parrish said.
As fellow travellers accepted their lost luggage with quiet stoicism Campbell exploded again. She was told that her swearing was unacceptable and the only other first-class passenger was moved away for his own safety.
As the police arrived Campbell screamed “You can’t f***ing touch me” and shouted down her phone to “make sure the press know”. When asked for the final time to leave of her own accord, Campbell replied: “F*** off, I have paid £5,000 for this. I have a right to be on this plane.”
Miss Parrish said the model “went berserk, thrashing her arms around uncontrollably”.
“At the time she was wearing formidable platform boots with stiletto-style heels,” she added. The 5ft 10in tall model hit PC John Eastick on the arm with her phone, kicked him on the shin and spat on him, and kicked PC Charles Campling on the thigh. As the officers tried to remove the model from the aircraft she shouted: “It is because I am a black woman, you are all racists. I am going to sue you. I am going to f*** you.”

And what did inefficient BA get as punishment?
Naomi paid 5000 pounds for a ticket and got not only bad service, which would be typical of BA, but she got damaged.
I would've kicked up a fuss as well. If a supplier does not deliver to BA's satisfaction, BA sues them. Don't they?
Frockney, Lüneburg,
If I went out of the door now, found a copper then kicked and spat on him I would be locked up so fast my head would spin........after a severe kicking on the way to the cop shop probably.
Nice double standards!
Ben Rosenthal, Manchester, Lancs
you can get the bird out of Peckham but you can't get Peckham out of the bird.she's a typical gangsteress from south London.confrontational and agressive and ready to play the race card at every given chance
Kevin, London , England
All she does is reinforce the stereotype, it's really that simple.
James, London, United Kingdom
Peter-Cambride; "Supermodel had a tantrum after appalling service - end of story".
Surely verbally assauting cabin crew, then verbally and physically assaulting a police officer, as well as resisting arrest, qualifies as a fairly serious offence? Unaccepatble behaviour, regardless of circumstance.
Alex, London, UK
The magistrates wouldn't dare jail her - they'd be accused of racism and breaching her human rights. NuLabour (tough on crime- ha) make me sick.
She should be given the maximum jail sentence to allow her to reflect on her obnoxious behaviour, maximum fine and be banned from all Brfitish airports
Bob, Cowes, UK
Avenues like this allow people to cowardly express their racial bias, comments like naomi is worthless, useless, people should perhaps look at their personal lives and check if they are any better.132 nigerians were thrown out of the plane by BA captain, imagine throwing out 132 british passengers .....
femi, birmingham,
It's clear now what type of person Naomi Campbell is. For me, the worst part of her behaviour is to falsely claim racism. I hope the companies that previously hired her no longer support someone that, frankly, is a disgrace.
John Stoddart, Winkfield Row, UK
In my view she shows all the symptoms of excessive Cannabis use !
This anger is the downside & after effects of the drug.
maggie millington, brittany, france
I can't support Naomi Campbell strongly enough, just take a look at British Airways of late, their own Pilot Doug Maughan confirmed the company is racist. I think she has more courage than the customers that jus meekly put up with the ridiculous service BA provides. More power to Naomi! Go girl!
Peter, jersey,
It's official: if you're Naomi Campbell or Amy Winehouse you can punch, spit at and kick as many people as you want. You will never be punished for it. Free pass to assault whoever you want.
Just don't you dare tell children it's wrong to behave like this when you let celebrities get away with it
Helen E., London, United Kingdom
Inadequecies of BA aside; if you or I were to strike a Police Officer and spit at them (!!!), do you think 200 hours of community service is all that would be handed out?
Kevin, Salisbury, UK
All people in the UK have the right to object to poor service but hitting people and spitting at them is an abuse of that right. This person was not thinking of others but only of her own inflated sense of importance and playing the race card is pathetic.
Her behaviour was apalling, full stop.
R Harvey, Hitchin, UK
Pampered, spoilt, prejudiced and rich so she gets community service. If you or I had done the same we all know that what the outcome would have been.
Richard K, Nottingham,
200 hours of community service is going to put a real crimp on her jetset lifestyle...
and it's going to be a real media feeding frenzy...
pcooke, Gloucester,
As a flight attendant I just cannot believe how many rude and moody people there are travelling around these days. Lots of celebrities are so breathtakingly arrogant and self-centered on board I wish I could sometimes give them a piece of my mind. But we have our ways of getting them back. ;-)
jayceeehh, Hamburg, Germany
Naomi Campbell is an embarrassment to the human race -- and by that I mean people of all backrounds and races. It is selfish, egotistical people such as her that steadily erode the quality of everyone's life. Her flawed track record speaks for itself.
David Phair, Hong Kong, China
As bad as Mugabe, who blames his ruination of his country on his skin colour. People are getting away with murder on the grounds of imagined persecution and the judiciary, hidebound by political correctness, has no teeth.
John Stitch, London,
Forget about her behaviour. The people who voted her or promoted her to become a "super model" must have been drunk. I've seen better in the amazon jungle.
jayil, london, uk
Since when did BA pilots double as baggage handlers? Allowing passengers access to flight crew was the cause of 9/11. Just one of the many reasons I never use BA.
alan calverd, bishops stortford, UK
One law for the rich another one for the poor. She is officially a danger to us all and should be locked up. Never heard of an assault on the police not ending up by jail sentence. Playing the racist card, just shows her lack of brain. Ban her from airplane. if she is so rich, she should fly private
Lauren, London, UK
We had a clothes horse at home but it never behaved like this! If Campbell did something difficult and important I'd have more sympathy - but then, if she did, she wouldn't behave like this.
Kevin Straw, Leicester,
T5 baggage chaos was in all the papers, D'oh! So, if it was that important for the dress to be somewhere why didnt she take it in the cabin with her or even have her luggage couriered?
And I very much doubt she paid for the ticket.
Carol Asacret, Cambridge, England
What does she have to do to go to prison. She sets a terrible example to youngsters by seemingly lashing out at anybody that annoys her without fear of reprisal. First her housemaid and now this.
Steven Porter, Barcelona, Spain
It's easy to condemn Ms Campbell, and I hold no brief for he shouting, swearing, fighting, and spitting. But I don't think anyone should go to prison for such things. Moreover, isn't she more sinned against than sinning? BA contracted to transport her and her luggage - then told her it wouldn't.
Tom Welsh, Basingstoke,
Who is Naomi Campbell?
GK, Calgary, Canada
Ms Campbell as usual does not cover herself with glory but as much as I dislike the woman, you have to feel a bit of sympathy for her after paying FIVE GRAND for a seat! Her language may have been 'unacceptable' but so was BA's incompetence! I hope she has the sense NEVER, EVER to fly with BA again!
Mike, Balsall Common, UK
I have no sympathy for BA in this, all she wanted was her bag more people should stand up for themselves like this, but then what happens - SHE gets taken to court. Justice.. pfft
Shaun, Chester,
BA has lost my luggage on almost every trip in the last year - must remember to throw a tantrum and have the capatain apolgize for it next time. These kind of people should not be allowed out in public.
Bill Atkins, Rehoboth Beach, USA
Visited a UK airport recently? 'Security' and jobsworths are out in force.
Gross inefficiency and poor customer service are masked by the officiousiousness.
I wish many more of us poor travelers fought to keep our dignity. Maybe we wouldn't be treated so badly if we did?
nick, ross on wye,
200 hours is a joke, she should of got the maximum 300 hours as a minimum.
Jon, london,
Ahmed, if you believe that to be the case why do you choose to live here?
Doug Bates, St. Albans,
Naomi is clearly unaware about how we, the general public, go about behaving in society. I don't believe that the race card is still played in Britain today. Celeb? Black? A white man spitting at police famous or not would face stronger terms. Pitty the UK allows this behavior. Famous or NOT.
BG, Liverpool, UK
I think Naomi Campbell is a disgrace. Famous or not, celebs should not be treated any differently than the average Joe. People like her should be made an example of. A spell in jail might do her good.
Martha, Stoke, England
Well, got off precisely because she was a woman, black and a celebrity. The magistrates are the ones who could be charged with sexism and racism. If she was a white man there would have been no hope of the doddle of community service.
Bill, Suzhou, China
She should be in jail but as an alternative it can only be hoped this foul-mouthed haradan gets some really dirty toilets to clean as an alternative.
Margaret, Alva, Scotland
Its ridiculous that Campbell should escape jail, its not as though this is a one off infraction- she clearly has a problem & is merely another "celebrity" that believes the laws do not apply to her. The authorities should give her at least 6 months to ponder her ways, community service is not enough
Stephen Manick, Trinidad,
A lot of people I know are saying "anybody else with her record would have received a prison sentence". This is an absolutely ridiculous thing to say. I can think of lots of celebs with criminal records who would have come out of court with a slap on the wrist. In their world this is draconian.
Jamie Cuthbert, Edinburgh, Scotland
I wonder if the British Justice system harbours a secret threshold level, of wealth and notoriety, before one becomes eligible for a "soft" sentence. I doubt that Joe / Josie Public would escape so lightly, for assaulting policemen and interfering with an aircraft's schedule.
Ron Durham, Auckland, New Zealand
Surely now the fashion houses, publishers and advertisers whose money and marketing campaigns have made Campbell rich, famous, and outrageously arrogant will see that she is a liability and not an asset and she will be consigned to the obscurity that her disgraceful behaviour towards others merits
Matt, London, UK
Everything's gone downhill since the Thules were dismantled. Public flogging of brattish women used to be very effective. Sigh...
Sarah, Vancouver, Canada
Campbell got the same sentence Joe public would have got - the prisons are full. Litter picking will hopefully reduce her ego.
The biggest travesty is "It is because I am a black woman, you are all racists" - this is demeaning and insult to real victims of racism. She has shamed blacks everywhere.
Richard, Manchester,
Not surprising that BA have decided to ban this pampered, self-opinionated thug. Let's hope that all the commercial airlines follow suit. She would then quickly learn how diplomatic she must become, in order to convince a (pricey) private "executive" company to carry her.
Ron Durham, Auckland, New Zealand
The only racist element here is if she were white and poor, with her record, she'd now be in jail.
David, London,
I would love to have seen how far that temper of hers would have got her in prison....
james Cullup, Oxford,
One law for the rich, and one for the rest of us. A jail sentence may have taught her some manners.
roger, london,
I am not surprised that there was only one other first class passenger. The last time I flew first class with BA, from London to Sydney, a cashmere sweater was stolen from my seat while we were refueling in Singapore. BA promised that it would be taken care of. It was, they denied any responsibility
Ian, Frederick, USA
Simon of Exeter, you may be right about jobsworths at airports and that UK is a police state. But on an aircraft there are no jobsworths, just crew trying to make your flight a pleasant one.Air-rage is absolutely out of order,no matter how famous you think you are.The law always supports the captain!
Brian Wildey, Fleurance, France
Good for Naomi. It seems only she has the guts to stand up to BA. Most passengers, sheep that they are, bite their lip and accept the daily humiliation of bad service. About time more people had a go.
michael clarke, london, uk
Why is it I behave perfectly well at airports, have nothing to hide and no alterior motives yet get treated like dirt everytime I fly anywhere, whereas celebrities behave atrociously and get away with it? I bet she's never been searched 5 times on a single journey.
Amanda Jones, London, UK
" Is it because I'm white ".
Something you never hear.
Nick Dixon, Sutton Coldfield, England
Told you so.
David Masu, Zürich,
What are the chances of another explosive foul-mouthed outburst during the community service?
John Jenkins, York,
the most shocking part in this story is that there was only ONE other first class passenger on a BA flight to the US
robert, vancouver, bc
I must say i do not agree with most of you. She had paid a large amount of money. She was told her belongings had been mislaid. The question is did she ever see the bag again?.I think there must be many thousands of people who found out after they had completed a journey that luggage was missing.
Stan, Norwich, England
I am disgusted, not least with some of the commentators on this HYS bringing it up as a race issue. If anyone played the race card in this disgusting hysterical tirade by this harridan, it was Naomi Campbell herself, not the professionals trying to do their job.
Miss Clothes-horse should go to jail
Tim, Newbury, England
Someone who is that ugly inside will always find life difficult. Her behaviour in the circumstances is indefensible. I personally do not believe her excuse. How did she know which bag was missing and which bag was loaded? Her behaviour shows an inner ugliness. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Matthew, Cork, Ireland
Naomi Campbell - what a bore. Imagine being held up on the tarmac for an hour while she preens, divas and lashes out at over-stressed staff. At Eton, the Headmaster had me uproot all the moss in School Yard with nail scissors - my knees bled. Let's hope they're as creative with this trying woman.
Geordie Kidston, London, UK
Did anybody believe that she was ever going to go to jail? If this had been a "normal citizen" then that person would have been sent to prison, especially when their previous record was taken into account. Typical British justice system that only punishes the plebs.
John, Oslo, Norway
Peter from Cambridge, what are you talking about. She assaulted a police officer. Are you seriously suggesting that having assaulted a police officer no further action should be taken? The entry point in the sentencing guidelines is custody.
Darren, Brighton,
Ms Campbell has enough people to say yes to her in the fashion industry - she needs to realise that the world does not revolve around her, & that she has no more status than anyone else out in the real world - why should she get away lightly with behaving like this with other professional people?
Gemma, Nottingham,
Ahmed, I suggest that you look around you in the hyper-politically correct society that we now live in, if you would like examples I'll happily provide you with several. This is not racial it is simply a case of someone with a huge ego believing that they can behave a certain way due to their fame
Dave, Liverpool, England
Its self-loathing people like Ahmed (from Luton) and John (from Elmstead) that use race as an excuse to rationalise any situation.
Get a life both of you!
Asif Ahmad, London, UK
Ahmed - your comments are so emotive & unfounded that I have to comment again - have you actually read any of the reports of this incident? There is no mention anywhere of any racist undertones. It is actually people like you, who try to twist any event to your divisive agenda, who keep racism alive
Gemma, Nottingham,
The officers and crew are going about it all wrong: they should quit their jobs and, in a couple of years, sue for lost income and emotional damages from abuse by Ms. Campbell - should be worth a few million. each.
Phillip, Indianapolis, USA
'these coments prove there is no justice in the UK fro blaCK and coloured people' - how many of the comments here discuss her race? I think the negative ones are mostly focused on privilages granted to the rich and famous, whatever their colour! If you want to preach on racism find some real cases!!
Gemma, Nottingham,
Simon from Exeter is right. BA's staff take delight in making every experience I've had with them unpleasant. Good on Naomi Campbell for standing up to them!!
Mark, London,
Simon, Exeter, You must do your homework, she is well known for her temper tantrums and uses any excuse to claim racism. She's already been in court at least twice in NYC for similar offenses.
In my book, a good six months in jail and banned from BA for life. Who needs this foul-mouthed nit -wit.
David. B. Monier-Williams, Scottsdale, US/ AZ
Naomi was right, this is a racist attack by rascists and now all these coments prove there is no justice in the UK fro blaCK and coloured people. The captain and policemen delibrately provoked her and I don't believe she used bad langauge as she is a lady. There is no justive in the UK for black ppl
Ahmed, Luton, England
Simon - You blame a police state for her getting arrested?!
It seems pretty clear to me that the police, and BA went out of their way to help her... when did you last hear of the *Captain* explaining to a passanger about a lost bag.
Typical spoilt rich brat.
She should be in Prison.
Andy, Plymouth,
Campbell would not have been famous if she was any other colour than brown. And if she was white, she would have been serving a prison sentance by now.
john, elmstead, UK
Was it Alistair Cooke who said that Duke Ellington was "a credit to his race - the human race". So applying that to Naomi Campbell, we would have to say that ...
Paul Randall, Chichester,
Isn't this all being taken a bit too seriously? In court? Until fairly recently this would all have been dealt with quietly without all this waste of taxpayers' money. Supermodel had a tantrum after appalling service - end of story. More serious offences are not treated half so severely.
Peter, Cambridge,
I would have to agree with Simon from Exeter. What about sending the T5 people to jail? They certainly caused a lot more "harassment, alarm and distress" than NC ever did.
F Calder, London, UK
Following-on, I forget how many times when working as an air-traffic controller at Heathrow I was asked by a pilot to arrange for the police to attend his aircraft to deal with 'air-rage'. Its an absolute no-brainer! No alleys to runaway to or car to speed off in. Jail, her and throw the key away!
Brian Wildey, Fleurance, France
I hope she receives some mental help, too. I don't want to be reading about her in future. To my mind, she's a victim of yes-people. It's no excuse, but she needs some time in reality, and jail should be the kick she so clearly needs.
PB, London, UK
Yet again, the rich and famous walk free. Guess what would happen to any of us in a similar situation? I'm sick and tired of our celebrity culture
Jill, London,
I would ban her from flying for 1 year
john, worthing,
Lock her up and throw away the key. Six months is nothing. Give her more time. This is her way. Always will be.
Betsy, atlanta, Ga.
She is nothing but a loud mouth. she she be in prison for years. Nothing but trouble. She shows her true color. Give her the limit.
Betsy, atlanta, USA
The prisons are full and the government is broke: she'll be fined, they need the money.
David Masu, Zürich,
I agree with Rus. It's a shame they don't use famous people as examples of what the law is when it comes to crime. If she doesn't go to jail, that gives the message to Joe Public that it's OK to assault BA staff.
Garth, Newport, UK
All you have to do to get arrested in an airport these days is look the wrong way at one of the obnoxious jobsworths that infest the place. I expect that this was a trivial incident until some ghastly bureaucrat started throwing their weight about. Sympathy to Naomi Campbell in the Police State UK.
Simon, Exeter, Devon
As usual, as a famous person, she'll probably get off with a slapped wrist and warning! No doubt the average Joe Bloggs would be sent down for this....
Rus, London, UK
