Three Territorial Army soldiers and the first British woman to be killed in front line service were remembered today at a pageant to mark the 100th anniversary of the reservists' official conception.
The deaths of SAS reservists Corporal Sean Robert Reeve, Lance Corporal Richard Larkin and Paul Stout was the biggest loss life suffered by the TA in a single day since the Second World War.
They were killed along with Corporal Sarah Bryant, from the Intelligence Corps, when their vehicle was caught in an explosion east of Lashkar Gah district in Afghanistan, on Tuesday during an operation.
The head of the British Army, Chief of General Staff, General Sir Richard Dannatt today paid tribute to those who had lost their lives as a crowd of 6,000 spectators filled Horse Guards Parade to watch the celebrations to mark the TA's centenary.
He praised the "remarkable individuals" who had displayed "dedication, passion and commitment" by serving their country.
Some 700 part-time soldiers are currently deployed in either Iraq or Afghanistan and are among 15,000 who have served in the Middle East since conflicts in both countries began.
Sir Richard told the audience, which included the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall: “It is a sad fact that in that time 11 Territorial Army soldiers have paid the ultimate sacrifice and laid down their lives, three this week in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
“But with their memory and sacrifice very much in mind the work nevertheless goes on," he said.
"This anniversary year celebrates the contribution and commitment of the Territorial Army and its distinguished heritage dating back to 1908.
“Then, as now, Territorials were dedicated and highly trained soldiers with valuable skills motivated by a sense of duty to serve the society within which they live.
“The TA continues to do so, not least through a significant contribution to current operations.”
Addressing the volunteers, he added: "I salute each and every one of you. Your contribution as dedicated, highly -skilled soldiers is very much appreciated and valued, not only by your fellow soldiers but also amongst the public at large."
His comments were echoed by Prince Charles who highlighted the importance of the reservists, who have been fighting alongside full-time soldiers since the first units of the then-titled Territorial Force were set up on April 1st 1908.
Before then, volunteers had only been called upon in times of crisis when extra numbers were needed to bolster ranks.
Prince Charles told the crowds: “You may sometimes feel you are pulled in three different directions. Juggling the needs of the family, your civilian career and the TA.
“We need to recognise therefore just what a debt of gratitude we owe to the families and the employers who support your essential contribution.
“Without their goodwill and their long suffering understanding, the TA would fail to be the extraordinarily effective force it has become.”
The pageant included a series of demonstrations and a history of the TA's role in The First World War, Second World War and more recent conflicts.
The TA bands then led a parade of 1,000 personnel and veterans along the Mall where Prince Charles received the royal salute outside St James’ Palace, before hosting a reception for those taking part.
