The Queen is shopping around for a private jet, despite a report last week claiming she was unable to afford a lick of paint as part of palace maintenance.
A government source admitted that Buckingham Palace will be “in charge of procurement” of the bespoke plane and specifying its internal design.
A small executive aircraft for the Queen, such as a Gulfstream or Learjet, would cost taxpayers about £5m to £10m. It would also be available to Gordon Brown and senior ministers.
While the rest of the country is being squeezed by rising prices, the Department for Transport has agreed that the palace can draw up its own specifications for the plane. They are expected to include a bar, catering facilities and in-flight entertainment systems, as well as up to 12 seats to accommodate courtiers, officials and the Queen.
Senior members of the royal family will also be able to use the plane, including Prince William, who recently gained his pilot’s licence and used an RAF helicopter to attend a stag party on the Isle of Wight.
Though modern executive jets are luxurious, the purchase will in one sense mean the Queen is downsizing. Previously she has been able to use larger planes provided by the RAF, but the government recently decided to axe the Royal Flight.
The prime minister rejected plans to provide him and the royals with a large plane, similar to the US president’s Air Force One, when it emerged it would cost about £100m. The decision to purchase a smaller plane was taken as a compromise.
MPs have criticised the allocation of public money to a new, personalised aircraft, saying it sent the wrong message about preserving the environment.
“It looks like we got rid of Blair Force One only to get Brown Force One,” said Norman Baker MP, the Liberal Democrats’ transport spokesman.
“The reality is that the government should not be promoting polluting air travel and should be setting an example. The message it is sending out is jet travel is fine for those who can afford it – in this case, members of the royal family, thanks to the generosity of the public purse.”
The plane will be used for internal flights and short trips abroad. The royals will have to charter larger planes or book seats on scheduled flights for long-haul trips.
A formal tender document to aircraft companies to design the bespoke plane is to be issued later this year.
A spokesman for the Queen said: “We are currently working with the Department for Transport to identify an appropriate aircraft for the use of members of the royal family and ministers.
“We are in the early stages of this review and no decisions on the type of aircraft have been taken as yet.”

I am so very tired of hearing this communist rubbish about the Royal family costing the taxpayer money!
The Royal Family GIVES 300million from the Crown Estates to the bloody taxpayer every year. From this the very modest cost of the Civil List and head of state are drawn. Now stop whinning!
Richard (Brit to the bone)., Brisbane, USA
She could get her grand son to borrow a Chinook - he's good at that.
Bob, Isle of Wight, UK
The Royal Estates belong to the people but only the monarchy can use them what a fallacy wish i could live to see a republic at least they would be elected. Also the royals dont have to be qualified or elected to this position only by birth which is questionable if one reads history.
Sabina Hastings, Nottingham, Britain
Our Fantastic Queen should have the very best of transport
she has been an Ambassador to our country for over 50 yrs
Now in the twilight of her life she should not suffer cutbacks.
steven, Blackpool, Lancashire
The most expensive way for the Queen to travel is by road because security forces have to search every waste bin, postbox, drain and bush.
With a small plane she can land at small local airfields when performing her duties
Good luck to her.
John, Paris, France
What a load of rubbish MPs roll out on a daily basis. How on earth do they expect the Queen to carry out the official visits and responsibilities overseas and at home - on behalf of the public and Parliament - and then moan when she needs a plane to do it. I bet they aren't reducing their air travel
Dominic, Copenhagen K, Denmark
Great news it is good to hear that as usual the royals are head and shoulder above what is happening in this country, and how hard we british subjects are fighting to keep are jobs, homes, and food on the table for our families? Carry on the royals show us what you think about your subjects.
Paul, Warrington, England
What a great idea. lets show up to a major international event in a small plane whilst the other nations show up in a superjet . Great for oll those photos of world leaders. We should be using a substantial aircraft with space to showcase our nation on board. A380 built with UK parts and knowhow!
Steve G, Ruislip, UK
I find those who argue against Monarchy mind boggling. They do not have enough between ears to understand benefits. No Royal Family = no tourists = no tax = everybody must word (no benefits for lazy ones). Also question of pride and character. Without Royals UK just another European country.
Dirk Toulmin - Van Sittert, Northampton,
When she flies as Queen of Australia (16 million people) she flies in a RAAF Boeing. When she flies as Queen of Canada (35 million people) she flies in an Airbus. When she represents the UK (60 million people) she has to hire a British Airways jet or get a scheduled flight. Embarrassing!
Leo Jones, Holyhead, Wales
After all she is the Queen and she deserves the best. Definitely the Queen represents Britain not the ministers. Rather than cutting her expenses isn't it the time to rethink of having Queen as acting head of the state and get rid of incompetent 646 MPs. A huge saving of taxpayers' money.
Somna, Croydon,
Thiago & James: Right. And the Royal website clearly explains the funding of the Queen as Head of State . These and grants maintaining occupied Palaces (in which HM & family are allowed to live) are .002 of annual UK gov't outlay-a pittance. Classist reporting and the masses' stupidity: typical.
Thomas Rex Campbell, New York , USA
Even 66p a day is too much for these wasteful, conceited, buffoons, in my opinion, writes Jim Rea barrister at law, Launceston, UK.
Much better value than grossly, overpaid windbags known as barristers at law!
Viv, London, England
I believe it is better for the RAF to ferry around our royals use transport we already have. The royals have got rid of there yacht britannia, which was always a great statement for uk abroad.
if needed the royals can afford to buy there own if they really want it, I see no reason why not !
JONATHAN ROSE, Gt Torrington, uk
What a disgrace this family of parasites really are.
Mikko Takala, Drumnadrochit, Scotland
As our head of state wherever she goes she represents us. If you think we should have another type of head of state you can't use the cost argument as justification. An elected/appointed President (e.g. Tony Blair, if you prefer?) would not cost less if we set him up to look the part.
Peter Ryder, Middlewich, UK
The sheer ignorance (sometimes intentional) of both the Press and the public about Royal finances is astounding.
Why not learn from the web site of The CROWN ESTATES, for example, and study THE FACTS. THE SOVEREIGN CONTRIBUTES MUCH MORE THAN SHE GETS BACK.
Thiago, Vigo, Spain
It would be tragic to lose the Royal Family because we don't look after them properly. Let's remember what we have them for - to know more people in the country than anyone else and to stop the Iron Lady or Bliar thinking they're top-dog. Big-Ears will do this important job just as well as Brenda.
Andy Dyer, London, UK,
Does anyone really care when your paying 66p on someone who represents your country and brings in millions of tourists to the UK every year along with their wallets?
George, Chester, Great Britain

How much longer before the British population wake up and realize that the royal family and all their hangers on are milking the country for all it's worth.
William Miles, Windsor, England
Jim Wills, Brisbane, Australia
No she shouldn't .Just because you want to sign up to the man-made global warming hysteria and see the world plastered in windmills and Kaftans doesn't mean we should all do what you say.
I fully support the Queeen on this. She should get an A380 with all the toys.
Phill, The Wirral, England
I think the Royal Family are worth every penny. People of such high standing need private up-to-date transport (including a plane) to keep them safe from the idiots of this world. In addition, how many of the environmental doogooders go abroad for their holidays and how do they get there?
Shaun Garratty, Rotherham, England
All the things in this country that the goverment waste my tax money on, does anyone realy mind spending 66p on the Royal family? Its the least of my concerns.
shane, blackburn, england
"The Queen should go shopping for a "Bullet Train". She should be promoting environmental responsibility."
Three things;
- the Queen already has a train
- that train cant travel to Europe?
- a high speed train is no use in the UK - no lines are straight enough for speeds over 100mph
jce, hathern, uk
"she was unable to afford a lick of paint as part of palace maintenance. "
It's not a matter of whether the Queen can afford Palace maintenance. It's not Her responsibility to pay for it. Unlike Sandringham and Balmoral She doesn't own a brick of it - the Crown does... i.e. the British people!
James Petersen, Sydney,
I bet it will be more reliable than the RAF Nimrods!
Victor Cedar, Scottsdale, Arizona, USA
