Lyme Bay Its claws were powerful enough to crush a man’s fingers but that did not save the largest edible crab caught in British waters from being eaten for lunch. It measured 12 inches across, one inch wider than the previous world record holder, whose shell is preserved in the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris. The 17lb (7.7kg) king of crabs was found on the wreck of a ship called the Empress of India ten miles off Lyme Bay in Dorset. The diver who caught it, Paul Worsley, from Aylesbury, could not believe his eyes when he saw it. “It put up quite a fight,” he said.

It should be left alone... back in the nature...
Sad... it is so unique... let it spread its survivor's genes...
are we really that desperate for its meat??
nothing else to eat on this planet?
Emi, London,
My son Oliver, aged 11, who loves looking for crabs at Birling Gap East Sussex and counts them among his friends says that your record-breaking crab should have been taken to a sea-life centre and not eaten for dinner!
Philip Visick, Eastbourne,
The headline should have read that the crab was invited AS dinner, not to dinner.
Was it really necessary to kill this animal? I don't see the point of it. Much better if it had been left alone to breed more crabs, obviously it was a survivor. I hope you're proud of yourself. Ugh.
