Camden The former Tory adviser behind David Cameron's controversial “hug a hoody” campaign got a bloody lip when he was punched by a hooded teenager as he tried to stop a gang stealing a moped.
Danny Kruger, who wrote Mr Cameron's speech advocating a softer approach to violent youth crime, said that he encountered the gang when he and his wife were viewing a flat for rent in North London.
As they were leaving, the owner of the flat was aghast to see his moped being driven down the street, with two boys on top and half a dozen of their friends scurrying behind.
The men gave chase. “Like the pair of prats we were, the owner and I tackled youth crime,” he wrote in The Spectator magazine.
The brave challenge did not go quite as planned. “When we caught up with the pedestrians, we received between us a black eye (owner) and cut lip (me), and no moped,” he said.
“My main memory is the spit-filled mouth of the little rat-faced boy who punched me,'' Mr Kruger added.

I lived in the UK, in Manchester, and i must say... HOw the hell can police tackle crime if they don't carry guns? How do they arrest gangsters in moss side? "Oh please, could you leave your gun on the floor for me?" That's simply ridiculous.
Roberto Santana, Madrid, Spain
why are you all saying bring back national servace? ok it may straghten some out but the others will come out of it fitter and well trained to kill how safe will you feel then
mike, liverpool,
The Police are too busy squeezing more money out of speeding motorists to go and solve real crime.
Ian, Denton, USA
Pure poetry!!
Bass Eye could not have done better than this!

I take it that Kruger didn't follow his own advice and try to hug the hoodies?
nick, brighton,
Save yourself the effort of reporting it to the police. They seem happy to accept crime as a normal occurrence and theft of property in particular is left to insurers to deal with.
Ben Garside, Loughborough, UK
Oh the irony!
Hopefully he'll have some sense knocked into him now.
Kay, Glasgow,
Conscript them and send them to the front lines... First!
David, London, UK
Talk to these people (hoodies as you characterise them) for fifteen or so minutes, and see what you come away with. The main thing is the lack of respect for anybody else, or their property
There is no empathy, no awarenesss of human boundaries, just some deep tribality. A firm response is needed.
Max, Slough,
Interesting that Mr Kruger's words reveal a complete change of view now that he is acquainted with the problem that he talks about, rather than just the theory. Most of us already knew that Mr Kruger.
Sean, Coventry, UK
Stop blaming their clothes and focus more on their home lives and social environment
Fiona, Morzine,
Maybe the phrase could be changed to 'mug a hoodie'? Obvioulsy - only when in pursuit of an individual who has committed an offence!

bitter irony

Bring back conscription. My own son got drafted (to the German army - he's German). It did him a world of good. They turned a sullen, impolite unhelpful young man into a polite, friendly and caring human being.
Oh, and by the way, they should draft the girls as well.
Stuart, Motril, Spain
There is plenty of litter and doo poop on the streets. Give these neanderthals a sentence with a shovel.
steve woods, wooler,
I had to laugh! I don't condone street violence at all in fact it is abhorent to me. But it just goes to show you that politicians have absolutely no idea of the real world! And I agree with Ed these guys would have probably been arrested and charged for trying to stop these criminals
jon, Norwich, Norfolk
What goes round comes round, ( innit ).

I completely AGREE! The government should be pushing young delinquent lads to join the army and sort themselves out!
c, notts,
What a little bit of experience does...
A Mitchell, Redhill, UK
Ed in London: For honest people to avoid being nicked, they must abide by The Honourable Victim Syndrome and take whatever the street filth care to dish out, be it injury or even death. Otherwise, it's off to the cells.
I don't claim to understand it. That's just the way it is.
Dennis, Portland OR, US
Don't people who intervene in this sort of activity get criminal charges against them? From all I've heard, stepping in, or even defending yourself is illegal here in the UK, and will result in you getting a criminal record (while the teen punk/yob gets an ASBO). That, of course, would be ridiculous.
Ed, London, England
Pretty much acceptable behaviour now. No one bats an eye. Happens everyday. So what. Get used to it. Oh, hang on a minute, "Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime" Remember that? DOH!
Lucas Tatek, Herts., uk
still want to take a soft approach on the Hoodies? Something has to be done, and it has to be done now. The army is short of soldiers, bring back conscription!
