Otterspool A fleet of 60 tall ships took part in a parade along the Mersey yesterday before heading for the starting line for a five-week race.
The Royal Navy frigate HMS Argyll led the Parade of Sail after vessels competing in the Tall Ships Race gathered at Otterspool Promenade, near Liverpool.
The ships will assemble off Northern Ireland tomorrow for the first leg of the race to Maloy in Norway. They will then head to Bergen for the next leg, to Den Helder in the Netherlands.
Thousands of people have visited Liverpool since the ships docked along the Mersey on Friday. Parts of The Strand, a road that runs past Albert Dock near Liverpool city centre, were also closed to traffic because of the volume of visitors.
An estimated 800,000 people were expected to visit Liverpool to see the ships over the weekend. Merseyside Police said there had been no arrests.
On Friday, the Princess Royal toured two of the ships being prepared for the race.
The Princess heard first-hand about life at sea for the 3,000 trainee sailors about to embark on the race as she toured the 75ft (23m) Danish ship Jens Krogh, built in 1899, and the Ocean Spirit of Moray, a modern vessel owned and operated by Gordonstoun, the Scottish public school.
