Young girls see their father killed by train

Itchingfield Two young sisters saw their father killed by a train as he tried to rescue their dog on a level crossing.

The girls, aged 12 and 8, were walking in the West Sussex countryside with their parents, Julian and Caroline Gunning, on Monday when the dog trapped a leg between the rail and the wooden walkway. Mr Gunning, 49, was trying to release it when he was struck by a 75mph London-bound train. The family, from Ashburton, Devon, were on holiday, staying at Horsham. A British Transport Police spokesman said: “The driver of the 11.11am Southampton to Victoria train was approaching the crossing when he saw a man, two children and a dog on the crossing.

“The people cleared the crossing, but the man went back for the dog and both were struck and killed.” The train halted a quarter of a mile on. The Arun Valley line between Bognor and Horsham was closed for several hours.

Mr Gunning’s inquest was opened and adjourned yesterday.
