Afghanistan casualty named as Jason Barnes

A British soldier killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday was today named as Corporal Jason Barnes, 25, from Exeter in Devon. He was serving with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, attached to 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment.

He was killed by a suspected roadside bomb in Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan as he drove an ambulance back to base after rescuing two injured comrades, the Ministry of Defence said.

His commanding officer said he was killed helping others when he could have “taken an easier path” and praised his “commitment and bloody-minded determination”.

Cpl Barnes's death was the first British fatality in Afghanistan this month. Last month 13 British troops died, including the first British servicewoman to die on active service in Afghanistan, the second highest death toll since operations began in November 2001.
