The British are so bad at foreign languages that the European commission has had to recruit linguists from Spain and Greece to translate documents into English.
Internal commission memos show the standard of Britons who apply to be European Union translators is so dismal that Brussels is taking emergency steps to fill the linguistic gap, including posting recruitment ads on YouTube, the video-sharing website.
While other countries have pass rates regularly nearing 100% of those who take EU translation tests, as few as 20% of British applicants pass.
Brussels rules state that translators into English should have the language as their mother tongue. British standards are so poor, though, that the EU has taken emergency measures.
Potential recruits are being given remedial coaching to bring their abilities up to standard, while a Eurocrat has been dispatched to scour Britain full-time for anyone who can speak foreign languages well, and to encourage schoolchildren to study them.
The gap has led to countries such as Spain and Greece setting up special units to translate into English, and other countries such as Poland are expected to follow suit.
A memo to a director in the the European commission’s English translation department warns that the forthcoming recruitment competition, which should produce 70 new translators, is expected to yield only 17. It reads: “We do not really expect the targets will be met fully.”
British schoolchildren’s interest in foreign languages has long been waning. Brussels insiders say the government’s 2004 decision to let children drop GCSE languages worsens matters.
Marco Benedetti, director general of interpretation at the commission, said: “The shortage of English translators and interpreters is becoming acute in all international organisations.”
The Department for Children, Schools and Families said an increasing number of primary schoolchildren are studying languages.

Nicola,
Yes, translator recruitment for staff positions, as opposed to outsourced work, is effectively only by competition. You just have to keep your eye out for adverts for your language combination and then apply. Sensitivity to translation-related issues is very advantageous.
Alison, London,
How can my translation agency participate of such competitions for translation services for EC?
Luiz
Luiz Claudio Farias, são luís, brazil
How can I apply to one of these positions? I have looked on their website a number of times but it appears that applications can only be submitted via competitions. Is this correct?
Nicola, Southport,
There is another thing to consider here. British translators work for the EU but if foreigners start translating into English that will mean less need for big English language units staffed with Brits so Britain will lose out in terms of the numbers of Brits employed. The government should react!
Michael D, Margate, England
I've been on to the EC's website many a time looking for work as a translator. Whenever I've visited, they've only been accepting applications from agencies to deal with large bulks of work. Perhaps if the situation is so desperate, it should let individual freelancers apply. I'm not so bad!
A Baldwin, Portsmouth,
We have a single European Currency, which is called the Euro. Why not have a Single European Language also beginning with the letter "E" and call it English? It would save a fortune in translation and wages of translators and the EU would not have to worry about the British being bad at languages.
Michael, Bromyard, England
Where Can I apply ??
I am fluent in French and Spanish having worked for years in both countries, and I did my A levels in a time before the government demagogues such as Estelle Morris started to interfere with the grades for their own tick box political adgendas.
Marcus, Sheffield, UK
@ Paul C
I agree, kids simple are not interested I work in a specialist language collage and we have class with just 3 kids in.
As for British society ofc its broken, political correctness and labour killed of self reliance and personal responsibility, now people just have to jump thought hoops.
Mr Jones, Liverpool, England
@ Paul C
I think if this is the case (and it may well be) then there is something very wrong with British society and it needs to change. Yes you can go practically anywhere, speak English and be understood, however that does not mean that you will be liked or respected.
Chris, Grenoble, France
@ Paul C
That might be so, the reason why british applicants fail though, is that they are obviously not as well educated as their european counterparts. Hence the 80 % failing rate.
Chris, Germany,
The answer is simple.
The majority of British people aren't interested in Europe or learning its languages.
Brussels and the Stalinist mob dictating Europe should get this!
