Strike on Tube goes ahead tonight

LONDON will be brought to a standstill tonight by a strike across the Underground network after last-minute talks aimed at settling a pay dispute broke down after just ten minutes yesterday.

Members of the RMT union will walk out from 6.30pm for 24 hours in the clash over a two-year 6.5 per cent offer.

London Underground offered to increase pay by a further 0.25 per cent but the two sides are at odds over changes to working hours and rostering.

The pay deal aims to reduce working hours from 37½ hours to 35 over two years but about a third of staff will not get the reduction.

In an increasingly acrimonious relationship between the union and the Mayor of London, Bob Crow, the RMT’s general secretary, blamed the breakdown of the talks on the refusal of Ken Livingstone and Bob Kiley, the head of London Underground, to take part in the current negotiations.
