Gary Glitter, the disgraced rock star, has been released from jail in Vietnam and is on his way back to Britain after serving nearly three years for sexually assaulting two young girls.
The convicted paedophile, best known for hits such as 'Leader of the Gang' was released unceremoniously from Thu Duc prison, 90 miles north east of Ho Chi Minh city and driven to Tan Son Nhat airport for deportation.
His lawyer, Le Thanh Kinh, said Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, was free to live anywhere outside of Vietnam. However athorities in Thailand, alerted to his impending arrival en route to Heathrow were expected to refuse him entry.
Sudarat Sereewat, a member of the Thai National Human Rights Committee and also Secretary General of FACE - Fight Against Child Exploitation - said she would be at the aircraft when it landed together with Thai Immigration Police.
"We are aware of his passport number and will happily assist Mr Gadd to the intended destination in case he has second thoughts about stopping off here," she said.
Flights from Tan Son Nhat airport to London stop in either Bangkok or Doha, giving Glitter, 64, the opportunity to disembark in either country. Recently he has said he wanted to live in either Hong Kong or Singapore, but was concerned about his health.
"He does not have any sentence to serve in London," said Mr Kinh. "He is a free man from today. The only problem is the countries he wants to go to because he has to get a visa.
"He is looking forward to coming back. He is OK but he is worried about his health. He has problems with his hearing and his heart." However, he said, "If he wants to stop whever he wants to he can do that. If he wants to, he can change flights".
Glitter, 64, had tried to book first class tickets but was ordered to travel economy class.
Qatar Airways refused to take him and a second choice of First Class Thai airlines via Bangkok was rejected by the Vietnamese authorities who insisted he travel tourist class.
The People's Socialist Republic of Vietnam considered that Glitter should not be treated in any way as a star, even though he had served his time, and had the cash to pay for it.
Gadd was released shortly after 11.30 am local time accompanied by Vietnamese police and a representative from the British Consulate in Ho Chi Minh.
Mr Kinh said that he expected his client would be travelling all the way to London but that he was 'unhappy' that we was travelling tourist class.
Once in the UK, Glitter will be placed on the sex offenders' register for life. He is said by police sources to be expected to go to a hostel set in its own grounds in the West Country.
The British authorities, however, are powerless to place a foreign travel ban or a sexual offences prevention order on Glitter to stop him going abroad or approaching youngsters in this country.
Instead he will join more than 30,000 people on the sex offenders' register, which requires him to give them his name, date of birth, home address and national insurance number.
Police take a photograph of the offender, who must re-register in person each year at a police station. He will be subject to monitoring and if he moves house or stays anywhere else for more than a few days he will have to notify police.
The 1970s rock star was arrested in November 2005 as he tried to catch a flight to Bangkok, after being accused of sexually assaulting the two girls, aged 11 and nine, in Vietnam. He was sentenced to three years in prison but this was reduced by three months in a Vietnamese New Year amnesty.
He had been arrested in Britain in 1997 after thousands of images of child pornograhy were found on nhis computer after he took it to be repaired. He was sentenced to four months in prison but after serving two, he moved to South-East Asia.
Glitter, who reportedly earns more than £50,000 a year from overseas royalties on his 1970s hits has spoken of plans to release a new album, or write his autobiography.

The Vietnamese authorities must be relieved to see the back of him but they should have made him travel in the cargo bay. Other SEA countries should be vigilant as we already have enough of these perverts here. Colin Lusk - the girls he molested will be serving time for the rest of their lives.
KatB, Thailand,
I think the star should set a model to the entire world, and show the fans what is right and wrong. It's a shame behavior to comment that illegal event.Anything illegal will affect the lives and future development of stars.
Nicky, beijing, china
Why are we letting him back in? We got rid of him once, why not keep it that way?
Steve, Liverpool, Merseyside
I believe Gadd's crimes are abhorrent and should be punished as they have been in a developing country jail which is nothing like a jail in the UK. However I do believe that too many people over react to these crimes. Aren't murder and violent rape just as bad but receive nowhere near this reaction?
Joe Bloggs, NY, USA
That's how it's done!! When someone commits a serious offence, he serves his sentence and is driven straight to the airport and deported and never allowed to return again.
Can we have some of that please here?
Leon Welliver, Whaley Bridge, UK
Rather than just condeming these people shouldn't we try to find out why they do this , its a fairly typical pattern of middle age men , what makes them go like this , no-one ever seems to ask this question for fear of condoning it , I dont believe they were just born like this , they need help
Andy, Chalfont , England
Why should he not be allowed back here, we allow 1000s of Eastern European criminals to come and live on the state and he has a British passport and in the past has paid into the ecconomy
jack, manchester,
Its ironic that the Thai human rights activists who will be waiting at the airport for this old pervert are there to prevent him from entering the country and thus protecting their children, no doubt our human rights activists will be more concerned about how Glitter is treated. says it all.
Martin, Tenerife, Spain
Although probably the highest profile sex tourist he is only the tip of the iceberg and stopping him from travelling will do nothing to prevent the trade. He clearly needs to address his sexual preferences and this is what the authorities should be concentrating on for helping him with.
Ryan, Bolton, UK
Unbelievable that the media is obsessed with this one bloke.
Sky News 8am: a five minute piece trashing Gadd. Isn't this tantamount to harrassment? It's distasteful, prurient and in the gutter reporting. Is this the most important issue facing the UK today?
John Jenkins, York,
Here we go again - allowing criminals back into our country.
This country is is tatters - its been shatterd by Blair and Brown and it just keeps getting worse.
Miacheal Miles, London, UK
I wonder if any one will attack him in hospital gosh no that could never happen, the lawyers would be bursting blood veslcles to scream his human rights had been violated. some have human rights some dont, vile disgusting creeps like glitter will always get protection. it makes me want to puke.
Mary, Stockport, Cheshire
Why does this animal get all this media attention that he will try to manipulate for his own gain? He should be electronically tagged and disappear from the public eye. This man is obviously very disturbed and a danger to society.
David, Cork, Ireland
I cant blame the other counties for not wanting him - its just a shame we have to put up with having him in this country. He should be treated like any other sex offender - instead of which there is already a media circus around him and I bet he will try and make money from it.
Cheryl Williams, Ruthin, Wales UK
It is a well known fact that most "child sex crimes" take place within the family
JP Massias, Casablanca, Maroc
I would like to see him get psychiatric treatment. This could help him and our society. Why wasn't this ordered when he was convicted here in 1997? Surely that is something within the court's power
Dave, London, England
Well said, Tom. This country is obseesed with child sex crimes even when there was no physical harm done. These peopel have to be kept in isolation in jail yet a somebody who tortures and kills a child doesn't? Why? The latter person suffers no vigilante action on release either.
Roger Tilbury, Worthing,
Everyone on the list should be taged with a GPS device so we all know where they are & can make sure they stay away from our kids. To remove a childs inocence is the worst crime a person can do.
Simon Westfield, Darwen, UK
I should hope we don't see anyone paying this disgusting creature for interviews.
Kate, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England
Tom from Ludlow makes a good point. We have extremely severe sentences, and a register for life, for sex offenders yet crimes of violence (ono-sexual ones) are treated almost trivially, by comparison. Why not have a violent offenders register as the distress caused is much the same in many cases?
JonathanL, Newcastle, UK
He's served his time, now he should be left alone.
Colin Lusk, Croydon,
Tattoo his forehead and castrate him.
John, Lincoln,
YUK!
Shirley Bowen, Blackpool, UK
These people are the worst type god ever put breath into. If the death sentance was ever brought back these people should be on the to of the list. As far as the toe rag in this artical all his royalties and any money he makes from records and books should go into trust for victims of these crimes
peter, london, uk
Instead of wasting public money protecting these individuals and trying to treat them surely it would be better to bring back executions such as hanging.
steve tea, manchester, cheshire
How come we have hysteria over sex crimes, yet crimes of physical violence - such as the mugging of older people seem to have no attached stigma, public registers and ongoing monitoring?
Tom Taylor-Duxbury, Ludlow, UK
It's time that either chemical or physical castration for people like Gadd was considered,i don't care about his human rights,we must protect our children at any cost from these sub humans.
Kenneth O'Boyle, Perth, UK
And therein lies the lunacy of this - 'the authorities are powerless to stop him approaching youngsters in this country.' Can't offend his human rights now, can we? I know what I would do with him, but I doubt if the moderator would publish it. Let's hope the press keep him in check, the law won't.
Graham, Bradford, England
Knowing where a sex offender lives and stopping them offending are two different things. The Sex Offenders Register is pretty meaningless in real terms.
Paulus, London , UK
Why avoid the media waiting for him at the prison gates?? Gee, we wouldn't want to upset him now would we! He's a child rapist, he should stay in jail period.
Taz, Portsmouth, UK
No thank you very much, we certainly don't want him in Hong Kong.
I think it's best you keep him in the U.K.
Brit expat in HK., Central, Hong Kong
Glitter mania starts all over again !
James, derby,
The act that empowers the sex offenders registry needs to be amended. There is no way they can be tracked if they leave the country. Since the act is designed to make it easier for authorities to track sex offenders, it should include a revocation of their passports.
Callum, Jakarta, Indonesia
