LONDON Pensioners’ groups called for the road sign depicting old people to be scrapped because it is insulting.
Age Concern and Help the Aged said that the hunched figure with a walking stick, above, should be replaced with a new image. Barry Earnshaw, Age Concern Lincoln chief executive, said: “The sign doesn’t represent older people as they are today. There should be a generic sign that is representative of all vulnerable pedestrians, regardless of age.”
A Highways Agency spokesman said that new signs would be costly and require a change in the law.

Next they the will be complaining that the "men at work" sign should be wearing a skirt as well so's not to be against women. I think its a load of old rubbish. I am not interested on who it insults as long as it warns me and keeps me and my family from danger. And for the argument, my nan is just l
Elizabeth, enfield, UK
What a load of rubbish! I'm a Senior Citizen, and I think it's funny. I told my Grandaughter it means pickpockets crossing. Must go I'm off to my aerobics class
Stone, Enger, Germany
There's always somebody looking to be offended by the slightest thing.
Get a hobby for goodness sake!
Phill, The Wirral, England
How ridiculous? At what cost? Aren't there more important things to worry about..
It'll be roadworkers next complaning that they look like they are putting an umbrella up!
Sylvia, Reeth, Yorkshire
What! waste more money on an unnecessary change.
I'm a pensioner but this sign does not apply to me, I'm not infirm.
Too many people with time on their hands thinking, 'Now what can we dream-up next?'
Stuart, KENDAL,
You all make excellent points, but all these years I thought the sign indicated butt-grabbing grannies on the loose? They should be pleased that elderly people are displayed as sexually vivacious go-getters.
Anna, Cardiff, UK
That many old people can now walk well is a triumph of modernity, but not the subject of that sign. It is intended not to tell drivers of the existence of the elderly in general what good would that do? but to warn them that they must be alert to those who have difficulty crossing the road.
James, New York City, United States of America
It's no better in the U.S. my British friend. But I have an idea! How about a sign showing an old person with a walker in one hand, teeth in the other hand, wearing a Depends. Then they would truly have something to complain about!
Ron, Colorado Springs, United States
The sign is not there to inform road-users of the presence of those of an advanced age who have no problem with mobility. Such people don't need a sign. The sign is there to draw attention to those who may cross slowly, hesitantly, with difficulty, with reduced hearing or vision etc.
Marco, Kraków, Poland
The sign doesn't say "old people" it shows people having difficulty walking. What's wrong with that? I've had to use a stick when I have been injured as have many others.
Elizabeth Harvey, Dunstable,
Cool, more PC'ness gone crazy again. No doubt by even saying this, I'll be insulting someone. All hope is gone for this country!
Arthur, Newcastle,
Apparently it is the ACHA that jumps to the conclusion that "elderly" and "infirm" are synonyms.
There is nothing on the sign to indicate age. The sign only indicates infirmity.
Keith S, Winnipeg, Canada
The next time I see a hunched pensioner I shall point out to them that they are clearly letting down the image of their demographic group. It's reassuring to know that when you give to a charity the money is put good use rather than paying the salary of some pen twiddling executive.
Nick, Woodbridge, Suffolk
Age concern anf Help the Aged seem to be missing the point.
Roger Lorton, Nongprue, Thailand
I'm having trouble of thinking of a different, more PC sign with equally simple graphics to put across the same message. Is this in fact offensive to the elderly or just the charity groups around them? It's just a traffic warning, and it's there for my own good!
Eleanor, Derbyshire,
If Age Concern and Help the Aged spent more than a nano-second each considering this daft idea, then it was a waste of time and cash. The sign may not be all-encompassing to its politically correct critics, but it is graphic, familiar and, in this 77-year-old driver's view, actually works.
R Wright, Droitwich Spa, UK
Would these people with vested interests please stop thinking of ways to waste the money I pay in taxes. I am a pensioner who believes that we waste too much money on non-productive whims.
Mike, Church Stretton, UK
As a pensioner I do not feel insulted - it takes me longer to cross a road. The sign is just right - it is a warning to drivers that if they give me hassle they are dealing with a pensioner armed with a stick and there may be two of us LOL.
My fav sign is the one "SLOW POLICE AHEAD" yea right LOL
P Barrett, Valletta, Malta
Politically correct tripe from Age Concern.
Pete, Lincoln, England
Re: "Beware of Old People" sign - is the sign supposed to show that the elderly are potentially a danger to motorists or to remind motorists that they are potentially a danger to pedestrians - of any age ? Surely the latter.
Alan, Sutton, England
What should be bourne in mind is that not all pensioners are bungee jumping thrill seekers and there is still a fair portion of the population as a whole who are wobbly on their feet. Isn't that who the sign is trying to protect?
Hannah Josiah, St Albans, UK
Is the name "Age Concern" and "Help the Aged" insulting to older people? Why are they not called "Concern" and "Help the"? You wouldn't want to discriminate would you!
Matt, Chester,
This is not a label which we require the elderly to wear! If if were there would be a good case for it to be censored.
It is a road sign to motorists and other users and should be understood to say "[there may be a hazard here from some] elderly people [like this]" which is perfectly valid.
Michael T, Surrey,
'There should be a generic sign that is representative of all vulnerable pedestrians, regardless of age.'
How are you to know where these 'vulnerable' pedestrians will be? School signs for schools, OAP signs for OAP homes. Anywhere else is just guesswork. Saying that, govt policy as it is....
Darren, Norwich, UK
Are LONDON Pensioners’ groups going to pay to replace them then? I somehow think not. Maybe they should be campaigning for something useful, like cheaper winter fuel for the elderly?
Mat, Manchester,
Very well put Elizabeth. And the reason there is a school road sign is that children are far more likely to run into the road rather than move slowly so different signs are most definately needed
Rob, Singapore,
Nifty pensioners have no need of road signs that warn of caution so can cross roads with confidence.
These signs do not indicate age, but infirmity.
Elizabeth Philips, Halifax , UK
