Notting Hill Up to 40 youths pelted police officers with bottles, bricks and debris in an attack that lasted two hours and marred the end of the Notting Hill Carnival. At least two officers were hurt. One was hit in the face by a broken bottle. Police in protective gear had to be deployed to Ladbroke Grove, West London, to help uniformed officers when they came under attack.
Chief Inspector Jo Edwards said that some of the group were arrested and police would be looking at CCTV to identify more offenders. “For over two hours our officers were faced with a hard core, mainly of young men, who came to carnival not to enjoy the event but to fight, commit crime and cause trouble,” she said. Police had planned an unprecedented operation to combat violence. Letters were sent to more than 200 suspected troublemakers warning them about their conduct, and 151 people from several gangs were prevented from reaching the carnival. There were 330 arrests, compared with 246 last year.

When you consider the total number of people that attend the carnival each year. The total number of arrests has not been insignificant for a number of years. Eventhough it is a shame that a few idiots have to spoil a good day

after convicting the guilty, rather than putting them in a comfy hotel , er i mean prison, why not make them suffer some embarrassing humiliation. that will make these thugs think again before throwing bricks at the police.

Something akin to the Riot Act of 1714 should be introduced as a matter of urgency. Such an Act would provide legal clarity when a riot was taking place and indemnify those who suppressed it from any subsequent court action.
