Woolacombe Military horses are given free rein during a race along a Devon beach, giving them a welcome break from their ceremonial duties in London.
The 40-strong group of horses and riders from the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery tore along the shoreline at Woolacombe.
The impressive steeds are given the runout every year to let off steam away from official duties at the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace.
Captain Kathrine Hamp, Left Section Commander, said: “It is a valuable part of the soldiers’ and horses’ training, providing them with a respite from the normal working routine and presenting a chance for relaxation and fun.
“We spend the majority of the year carrying out high-profile ceremonial duties in London, including the State Opening of Parliament and the Queen’s birthday parade.
“It’s great to come to Devon. The beaches provide a wonderful getaway for our horses, providing quality time in wide-open spaces and allowing them to have a proper gallop and a swim in the sea.”
A spokesman for the MoD said: “Few places offer the vastness of a beach like Woolacombe, which allows these mounts the space and freedom to gallop at will and dip their hooves in the surf.”
