A hotel that refused a wounded soldier a room, forcing him to spend the night in his car, was backed into a “grovelling” apology yesterday after receiving a barrage of abusive phone calls.
Metro Hotel, in Woking, Surrey, had to call in the police as their lines were flooded with angry, abusive and threatening calls from members of the public.
The attack on the switchboards came after it emerged that Corporal Tomos Stringer, 24, had been told by hotel staff that it was company policy not to accept members of the Armed Forces as guests.
A soldier since the age of 16 and veteran of multiple tours in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan, Cpl Stringer had travelled to Surrey to help with funeral preparations for a friend killed in action.
Cpl Stringer, who was not in uniform, presented his army warrant card when asked by the hotel for proof of identity. After the receptionist refused him a room, he was left with no choice but to bed down in his tiny, two-door car, his wrist, broken during a convoy ambush, cased in plaster.
Cpl Stringer’s local MP, Hywel Williams, the Defence Minister, Derek Twigg, and Bob Ainsworth, the Armed Forces Minister, have all written letters to the hotel, and Army men and enthusiasts have swamped the forums of the unofficial British Army website calling for a boycott.
Some have suggested booking the hotel en masse only to cancel at last minute. Others are encouraging their colleagues to post comments about the hotel on customer review websites.
One review site has already received half a dozen such comments. “As a serving member of the British Armed Forces, I’m disgusted to see that one of my colleagues was refused a room in Metro Hotel in Surrey . . . because their policy is to refuse all army personnel,” wrote one.
“Anyone considering using any services of this company should definitely not bother. I’m sure a more patriotic company can be found with far superior services.”
After a resolute silence, the hotel, owned by a company called American Amusements, finally a statement.
“The Metro Hotel, Woking, sincerely regrets any upset caused towards Corporal Stringer and his family," it said. "The hotel management has always had an open door policy to all its visitors and guests, including members of the military and Armed Forces.”
The receptionist on duty at the time had made a mistake, the statement added.
A personal letter received by Mr Williams, MP for Caernarfon, went further, saying that the hotel had recently experienced “some rather serious incidents” involving soldiers from the nearby barracks.
Michael Chaussy, the manager of Metro Hotel, insisted that there was no blanket policy, but that it was “a decision for the manager to assess whether the hotel booking is to be accepted”.
“This process does not appear to have happened in this case,” he conceded.
Cpl Stringer, of 13 Air Assault Support Regiment, The Royal Logistic Corps, has now returned to Afghanistan, but his mother, Gaynor Stringer, from Criccieth, North Wales, told The Times that she was still furious about the incident.
“I’m very, very angry. It’s discrimination. They would never get away with it if it was against someone of ethnic origin.”
She added: “In America, they treat soldiers as heroes. We went to Disney World with Tomos and the whole family was moved to the front of the lines. Everybody was standing up and clapping and cheering. Here, soldiers can’t even get a bed for the night.”

THEY NEED TO REMOVE THE AMERICAN PART IN THEIR NAME.THATS A SLAM AGAINST AMERICA WHERE WE ARE FREE & HAPPEN TO BACK OUR SOLDIERS.AFTER ALL THEY ARE THE REASON WE ARE THE LAND OF THE FREE...THEY ARE OUR TRUE HEROS.IF YOU CAN READ THIS THANK A SOLDIER! A TRUE AMERICAN FROM THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
RSJ, A TOWN IN AMERICA, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A large number of hotels and motels all over the United States advertise (some in neon ) discounts from 10 to 30% to members of the military or police and their families. They are proud of their soldiers and show it every way they can.
pat, sackville, canada
Businesses that have trouble with Soldiers need to call commanders that will hold Soldiers responsible. The civilian market needs to be educated in this system (both in the U.S. and U.K.) to foster cooperation. But a wounded Soldier travelling alone? Absolutely shameless, almost treason.
Captain C. Kent, U.S. Army, Tucson, Arizona, USA
Apparently the British establishment hasn't improved since Rudyard Kipling's time.
"O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,"
Facing the music now?

There is nothing good about the British economy struggling to keep companies solvent - but, this troubled economy combined with a boycott willl probably put this anti-military company out of business. And they earned it!
Henry, Newberry South Carolina, USA
I understand the policy... Soldiers from the nearby barracks were rude, loud, and probably using the hotel for sexual encounters and not the most ideal guests. I am in the military and we work hard, but we play harder. It was the garrison soldiers that ruined the Army's reputation for the hotel.
Ashleigh, Atlanta, GA, USA
My brother is in the Army National Guard as an MP. As someone who has nothing but respect and awe for our men and women in uniform serving our country, this is an absolute OUTRAGE! The person who turned this soldier away should be severely reprimanded and/or terminated for discrimination!
L Achatz, Ypsilanti, USA
I am an American Soldier, have done a few tours in Iraq and i must say that it is DISPICABLE that any company treats any verteran like this, They should be ashamed for their actions and be boycotted out of existence. I had the priviledge of working with a few British troops and they were Genuine.
Brian, St. Louis, MO, USA
Shameful - this is disgusting treatment of one of our boys. I'll definitely never use this hotel chain again. My son is in the army and about to go to Afghanistan - I would be livid if it was my boy. Shame on you.
Myra Morris, Llangefni, Anglesey
This is truly disgusting and inappropriate. As an ex soldier who has served his country on the front lines I cant believe what I have read. If thats the case then I would sleep in my car rather than stay in this hotel as at least my car is non judgemental.
d smith, manchester,
The hotel got caught in a faux pas and they layed
the blame on the clerk. Someone over the clerk
is most likely the blame. They need to investigate
more thoroughly and meanwhile offer up some
reasonable discounts for a good while as an
apology to all the troops that pass through their
area.
tom, tecumseh, mi., u.s.a
It sickens me to see that such a brave young man could be treated this way...God bless you son for your service. Some people are ignorant. May God keep you safe.
Caroline, Ludington, USA
My heart goes out to you and your family, CPL Stringer for the embarrassment you endured. I thank YOU for your sacrifice and service to your country. I understand that you might be already in Afghanistan, and I would love to send you care packages on behalf of Smiles "N" More...Texans for Troops
Yolanda M. Garacia, Mercedes, U.S.A.
To Cpl, Stringer, Family, and fellow Soldiers,
Thank you for your support. As a brother in arms I say: To hell with Metro Hotel!
Ty, Pocatello, United States
I was spit on and called baby killer on my return from Viet Nam '70, I understand the sick minds of some people. But, Cpl Stringer, some are too ignorant, blind and self centered to understand what you have endured in serving your country and the free world. I salute you my brother. God's Blessings
Roger, Phoenix, AZ, U.S.A.
I'm an African American woman who's experienced discrimenation my entire life. Whether for being a woman or an African American woman, I've always been condemned for this. It's a Very Bitter Sweet to see that people are being forced to feel as my culture has felt their entire life. BOYCOTT
MORGAN, SACRAMENTO,
To Cpl. Stringer and his family,
Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your service and sacrifices. I am appalled that you were treated in this reprehensible fashion. As the relative of a fallen Marine, rest assured that the Metro Hotel will never receive my patronage.
God Bless and keep you.
Delores Dickinson, Richardson, TX, USA
Cpl Stringer, I am very grateful to you and all the lads that serve your country. I doubt very seriously that "The Metro Hotel" in Surrey, or any other Hotel in the U.K. , will ever make this same mistake again!
Note to "The Metro Hotel": Don't ever disrespect the military!
Maj Robert McDonald, USAF, Florida, USA
As an American, I'm very proud of the troops that serve and risk their lives, however, I'm all for the free market as well (which I don't think exists in Britain). I don't condone what they did, but the hotel has the right to make it's own business decisions, no matter how foolish they may be.
Anonymous, Charlotte, NC, North Carolina
Cpl Stringer, as the father of a Clp in the U.S.M.C. I am outraged
by the treatment of your son. Stand up for decency. Your son
is in our prayers. God Bless, Richard T. Cunningham
Richard T. Cunningham, Vienna Va., United States
Cpl Stringer, I am very appalled that the hotel treated you in such a fashion. I myself have family who is in the military and has served. I am sorry you and your family has had this experience and while it does not change my mind on one day coming and visiting the country, I know where I won't stay
Tonia, Ft. Worth, USA
CPL Stringer,
As a U.S. Army veteran I appreciate and admire the sacrifices you and your family make everyday.
I am drafting a letter to the dreadful metro hotel to voice my disgust with their policies.
Continue serving with the honor that those idiots at Metro hotel wouldn't understand.
Mark, Georgetown, Texas, USA
Cpl Stringer, I. I'm very sad and sorry to read about your incident. As an American veteran with 22 years of service, I salute you for your service and sacrifice to Great Britian. As for the Metro Hotel, I read your apology. It was lame! I'm certain you could do better than that.
Dave Zaldivar, Shiloh, U.S.A
No one who has ever served or has loved one's who are serving.. would ever make the mistake of thinking the soldier is the policy maker..or that as a sub-culture soldiers are all alike (re: drinking and fighting).. shameful that this hotel has turned away anyone who has served, well make em change
jay, banff , canada
Just remember! When you have people like this in our world who discriminate. Just fight for the ones that you know are truely compassionate about the men and women of all armed services, world wide!
(A U.S. Army Sergeant)
Shelman Spencer, pittsville, United States
I always go up to soldiers and thank them for taking care of me.
SHAME, SHAME TO METRO!!
Gloria Ambrosini, Chicago Heights, IL, U.S.A.
Our soldiers serve at the request of our country and need and deserve our support. The soldiers also deserve our respect, The Metro Hotel, Woking, does not.
nigel hyde, Bristol, England
'The ... anti-'squaddie' ... here is surprising. '
Speaking as someone who faced 6 months hospitalised after a drunken squaddie decided that a rocker was not a 'human being' and used his training to 'destroy me', I agree with them.
What did he get? decided it was a 'Army Matter' and aquitted.
Kevin, UK,
Force that hotel out of business and turn the place into a hospice for wounded men coming home from protecting England and the United States as well.
James Platler, Los Angeles, USA
I encourage the Brits to join together and show a united front against this injustice to their brave men and women in uniform. Demonstrate at the hotel, hold a vigil, invite the media, no corporation likes negative publicity. Hit them where it hurts--in the pocketbook. Follow our example here in USA
t, new york, usa
I am horribly offended not only by the disgusting treatment this soldier received but also that the offending hotel appears to be an American company. I think I will start a campaign of my own here in the States against these idiots.
Marianne, hopewell Junction, United States of America
how terrible that any one could refuse a room to someone because of a job that they do that place should offer a years worth of rooms to this very brave gentleman, and a very big shame on them. everyone should be very proud of all the service men and women the do a very dangerous job.
linda, apollo, usa
You are invited to stay with me and my family anytime you need a place on this side of the pond. THANK YOU for your service in helping protect our WORLD from terrorists.
Miami Cane, Tampa Bay, Florida, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A group of soldiers may pose a risk to premises as may a hen night group eg excess alcohol may = abuse to staff/damage to premises. To refuse a woman a bed for no reason except women had caused trouble before would be unthinkable. Soldiers deserve to be treated like any other British Citizen.
Helen, London, UK
Well, now I know where I won't be staying when I visit.
Melanie, Phoenix AZ, USA
Disgusting...shame on the Metro!
MJ, Bethlehem, YSA
SHAME! SHAME! AND DOUBLE SHAME!!!!! It is a very sad day in society when a soldier is FORCED to sleep in his own car. What has this world come to??!!
Patty, Wytheville, USA
What would one expect in a country that has allowed itself to lose so much of its historic national pride to the forces of multiculturalism?
Albert, Fredericksburg, USA
As a former member of the American Air Force I am appalled that anyone would fail to give this soldier a room for the night. They fight for everyone's rights and to get treated this way is disgusting and inexcusable. An apology is simply not enough for they way he was treated.
Jennifer , Siegelbach, Germany
Rob, Lanchaster PA: My "personal safety and liberty" was never under threat by Iraq, so the forces who invaded that sovereign state not only did not invade in my name, but their action has made absolutely no difference to my personal safety, other than put it into jeopardy by retaliation.
Laura Roberts, London, UK
The anti-patriotic, anti-'squaddie' comments by the Brit's here is surprising.
Clearly, the education system has broken down in the UK to the point that the general public does not understand that their personal safety and liberty depends upon those 'drunken squaddies' and not socialist multiculturalism.
Rob, Lanchaster PA, USA
Having lived in Aldershot I have seen the mess some soldiers have left behind, however, they would have had card details to recompense for any damages. As for the receptionist, I think the poor thing is a scape goat, someone must have backed the decision, probably the manager. Shameful behaviour!!!
Sam, Hampshire,
As an American with both english and welsh blood I find it shamefull that anyone or any business would be so cruel. If any law has been broken I hope one of your more decent Lawyers file suit on his behalf. If not at least get a law in place to protect you military heros.
RKeller, Elmira, USA
The people that are saying that soliders cause trouble and rob what ever isnt nailed down, can i just say that you get people every day robbing and trashing hotel rooms so i think its unfair to pin so much on them.
This is discrimination at its best and has his mother said if it were to happen to an Ethnic Minority there would be a formal inquiry into what happened.
It just shows whats happening to this country
You put your life in danger for it and you get nothing back
Whereas if you come here illigally from another country they have all the benefits in the world for you.
Molly, Liverpool, England
Joe, Louisville, you mean Harry.
My B-I-L owned a small hotel in Portsmouth until 9 soldiers stayed over for free and destroyed the rooms they stayed in and put a female member of staff in hospital after beating her and throwing her down the stairs. From his experience, such behavior is common.
anne, nottingham,
I am from America. I just read your article and I think it is beyond belief that anyone would treat a soldier this way. I am disappointed and disgusted by the blatant disregard for this soldier's well-being. My sympthy goes out to his mother, whom I would advise to sue this company !
Lillian Frietze, Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA
I just want to remind everyone that our solders made the decision to serve their countries. They do not have the luxury of choosing what war to fight nor do they choose to see a friend die in a war that he may or may not believe in. The hotel made a poor decision.
Matt, St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
As an ex RAF man I find this story very disturbing and unfortunately not uncommon. If one reads the newspapers this type of story although not involving hotels can quite often be read. I would suggest that any right thinking person should avoid staying in this group of hotels at any cost.
Leslie Jackson, Stourbridge, United Kingdom
probably down to previous bad experience with squaddies trashing hotel rooms. but a right wing NRA member american wouldnt understand that. your american comments make me sick.
n hed, warwick, uk
As we say in the United States when we soldiers and veterans have been faced with harsh words and bad treatment, I thank God we have people such as Corporal Stringer who are willing to take that oath so the Metro Hotel has the FREEDOM to behave very badly. God Bless you Corporal.
Jennifer, Phoenix, USA
Lets face it anyone who has lived in a barracks town has had to deal with abusive drunken squadies who get in fights and steal whatever is not nailed down. I would not let them in my house for sure and if he is "wounded" he should go to the hospital.
Melissa Laurie, Aberdeen, UK
This soldier deserves our gratitude and love and this hotel should be removed from the list of hotels on every website.
Kathy , Irvine, CA, USA
I live in Israel . If you pulled a anti-military stunt like this you would be tossed from the country . Your business would cease to exist . Your name would be ingrained in the minds of every Israeli that loves their country . They would never help you , even if you were drowning !
Gad ben Rosen, Raanana, Israel
I was born and raised in Scotland and England. God Bless that young man and his family. I have a son in Iraq on his 4th mission. When he comes home for a month the captains on the flights ask everyone to say seated until he gets off. Everyone does and applauds. What has happened to my native land?
victoria Whyte, Tarpon Springs, United States
I would like to remind all of those people who attack soldiers that without their bravery and sacrifice you might not have been able to express such ignorant views, as the many freedoms that we have sometimes must be defended by force Your comfortable liberalism is deeply naive and ungrateful.
Tom, London,
I'm appauled at this hotel's discrimination against this soldier.
How dare them turn away someone who served his country and ours (USA) to help deter the very terrorists who would kill their sorry butts if they could just get to them. Everyone
boycott this hotel.
Tks for your service son.
Sherry, Kansas City, USA
This hotel should have their licensed revoked its racism in its purest form. ...
Peggy Burke, Midlothian, IL, USA
Racism???
RACISM???
Where the hell was the racism? Seriously, with comments like that, and the Russell Brand debate, one wonders if there's a single brain cell left in your country.
Tom Franklin, London, UK
I am a US citizen, and the mother of a US military man. I would personally see to having that hotel put out of buisness, had that happened to my son. And in our country, I would have hundreds of other supporters right along side me! Guess ignorance is alive and well all over the world
Linda, Memphis, USA
I presume you voted against the current government, protested against the wars etc etc.
Charlotte, London,
Actually, that's incorrect. There is no "must obey" and the chain of command has nothing to do with the right of a soldier to refuse to fight.
Every soldier out there could have refused.
Laura Roberts, London, UK
James, the British forces must obey the goverment, this is simply the chain of command. It is up to the citzens to choose which government the armed forces obey. I presume you voted against the current government, protested against the wars etc etc.
Charlotte, London,
Having served with UK troops in Vietnam I know the caliber of your fighting men and women and I would gladly serve beside them anywhere.
As a sucessful busnessman who travels to the UK with 6/10 associates, quite frequently...probably 15/20 times a year, and stays with this chain, well...NO MORE!
M.J. Brown, ret CSM, US Army, Roanoke, VA,, USA
This hotel should have their licensed revoked its racism in its purest form. A single person being blamed for the actions of multiples & yet having ANY such policy is ridiculous, Their is joy when your home from battle joy & not saying we should tolerate descruction bu give some leeway THEY LIVED
Peggy Burke, Midlothian, IL, USA
Corporal Stringer,
Many people do not understand what you do and therefore will suggest that you asked to be treated that way. I say you should have been given a room as requested. Some of the posts say thank you. I also say that is correct. This post is from a retired U. S. Marine
Thomas E. Reasinger, Palmerton, USA
jacinta it is sad that you don't realize what your soldiers protect for you. For those who have fought for it, freedom has a taste the protected will never know.
AnyMarine, Quantico, VA, USA
Corporal Tomos Stringer, my thanks to you for your service to your country. I wish you and your family and your comrades in arms all safety and my prayers for your safe deployment. And I hope, as well, that this hotel goes out of business.
Walter Lane, Beverly Hills, FL, USA
How is it heroic to refuse to support those who would die for you and the country you live in? ALWAYS honor the ones who protect your rights as a free human being. Soldiers may make war "possible," but in the Free World, they are there first and foremost to protect the liberties you're born with.
Caitlin, Ipswich MA, USA
Why should these people be respected? They're fighting a dishonorable war which has caused vast death and misery to many civilians because the Americans want their oil.
I agree with the previous contributor: the refusers are the heroes.
Jacinta, London, UK
To James. Did you vote for the Warmongers who sent our Troops to Afghanistan and Iraq?
John O'Connell, Loughborough
Er, no I didn't. So...?
The politicians who started this illegal war are vile, no doubt about it. But it's the soldiers who make it all possible.
The heroes are the refusers.
James, London, UK
To James. Did you vote for the Warmongers who sent our Troops to Afghanistan and Iraq? If so you deserve less than the lack of respect you show to our Forces. I don't agree with this illegal war but don't blame it on Our Hero Servicemen and Women. I Blame the Corporate Oilmen & Politicians!
John O'Connell, Loughborough, England
James, they have the same say that the 3,000 dead in the World Trade Towers have to say. And the same say those poor countrymen of yours that were killed in your subway tunnels. Sadly, people forget that the supposed 700,000 dead resulted largely from the muslim extremists in their own country.
Tony, Sacramento, USA
Dave, San Francisco - what rights and privileges have the 700,000 dead Iraqis got?
I don't think it was hotel policy, but I wish it was. I am disgusted at the actions of our forces in the world right now and have no pride whatsoever in any of our soldiers who made this massacre possible.
James, London, UK
just another example of the lack of appreciation for all the rights and privilege our service men and women protect and provide for. unfotunatly I'm not shocked or surprised. I see that garbage everyday around here.
Dave, San Francisco Ca., U.S.A.
A soldier should never be treated the way they treated him. I agree with Anaya Lynn a list of all the businesses owned and operated by this company should be published. I would never use their services.
B. Tucker, Vernon, AL, USA
I would be willing to bet real money that 99.9% of the guests would have given up their room to this soldier.
Kara Tyson, Mobile, AL , USA
What a sad commentary on greed over humanity. When a soldier is refused a place to sleep there can be no justification. I am ashamed this is an American Company and agree that a list of all the businesses owned and operated by this company should be published. My apologies to this soldier & family.
Anaya Lynn, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, America
Cpl Stringer or any other member of the British Armed forces would also be welcome in my home. As for American Amusment Ltd, they bear sole responsibility for establishing policies, hiring qualified people, and properly training the staff. No member of the armed forces should ever be turned away.
P.Pugh, Houston, USA
The conduct of this hotel is clearly reprehensible. I think the officials in England will make an enquiry into whether or not this was a mistake by a clerk or of it was the official policy. Their response rings hollow to me
American Congressmen and Senators also should offer a public condemnation
Rev. Stoneking, Bushnell, USA
Mitch from Boston, given that you've just listed the British as people "whose respect we would just as soon not have", why have you bothered to comment in the first place on the ill treatment of a British soldier? Don't you care about his degree of respect for you either? How disgusting of you.
Dion , Liverpool , England
Isnt it like a mental disorder when you peer into mind of some people and companies that actually treat our (solders of the world) like this. Gods speed to Corporal Tomos Stringer and all men and women wearing the uniform of all counties fighting the evil that lurks in our presents.
Patrick Mitchell, Gainesville, Virginia, USA
Thank you and your fellow servicemen, from all of the Nations, on whose willingness to defend our freedoms from the terrorist and their minions, is a moral strength, that in world of cowards, does not reccognise. The insult you endured reminds us of the refusal of shelter for the Holy Family
Vincent Ciappetta, Cutchogue, USA
I'm sorry a fine young man was treated this way; that is reprehensible. Honor the warrior, regardless of your feelings about the war.
Ed, North Carolina, USA
CW in London said "Btw, I am ashamed of our soldiers."
These are the soldiers who are willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice for you and this is how you repay them.
Btw, I'd like to thank you Brits over there who are willing to back the US even when it's not the most popular thing to do.
Will Dell, Billings, MT, USA
Thanks, Matt! To be called militaristic by the Germans, arrogant by the French, racist by the Belgians, imperialistic by the Russians, and insular by the British -- well, I have to think we're doing something right. There are some people whose respect we would just as soon not have.
Mitch, Boston Massachusetts, USA
For all you potato-heads that think its ok to have a policy about soldiers-
1) Had trouble with some soldiers so no soldiers allowed.
2) Had trouble with some blacks so no blacks allowed.
3) Had trouble with some foreigners so no foreigners allowed.
4) Etc..
Is that OK? "Get it" yet??
Paul F., Des Moines IA, USA
Utter disgrace.A profound insult to every member of Her Majesty's Forces, past and present! We've seen a parade of ridiculously reverred footballers, pop idols, film icons and the likes who blatantly flaunt their status in disgraceful drug/drink induced exhibitions at these hotels,They are welcomed!
Madeleine Shaw, Leicester, UK
I have canceled my reservations at this hotel. I travel every week for work and will never stay in this hotel again. I have called my collegues and they have done the same. There are 125 of us on the road 4 days a week. There are nicer hotels with better service than the Metro Hotel.
Stephen, Up yours Metro, USA
This is getting very boring.
The hotel says it's not poicy, so why 300+ comments whinging that it is.
It was the receptionists fault,: could well be, could be a scapegoat, so ask the receptionist too.
Soldiers don't behave like "heroes" all the time: local fear.
Btw, I am ashamed of our soldiers.
CW, London, UK
How DARE they refuse a HERO.
Men, and Women, in uniform should NOT have their RIGHTS denied because of "politically incorrect" COWARDS!
It is time that we WAKE UP to the fact that our society (in America and in England) is under attack (literally and actually) by others who want to DESTROY us!
Jeffrey Schrembs, Washington DC, USA
If Corp Stringer is ever in the America he is welcome in my home. I guarantee him a warm bed and plenty of great food and drink - God Bless him and his family! Thanks to my fellow Brit Armed Force members.
Greg Gagnon USAF Retired, Langley AFB, Virginia, USA
What a lovely way to get free advertising! Ha! I suppose tourist organizations here in the USA will be marking this little nothing of a hotel off of its lists. Not only should they apologize to this soldier, but they should send him and his family on a free vacation for 3 weeks to Hawaii!!!!
TZinkle, Knoxville,Tennessee, USA
No one should ever forget their own no matter whose flag or uniform you serve under. The simple fact is not to dwell in the past whether victorious or subdued. Move forward all nations and please put the past to rest but never forget either. Tomos God bless and thank you for all your endeavors.
Brett a USN Vet, Quincy, USA
I thought this type of behavior went away a decade ago. The young Corporal sounds like he handled the matter like a soldier. Obviously, the hotel didn't take into account the public relations nightmare they'd unleashed due to this fiasco. Prayers for Cpl. Stringer & family.
Robert, Indianapolis,
What a shame! That is NOT the way to thank the job these guys are doing. I really thank the Coaliton Forces for the GREAT job they are doing in protecting the free world and eradicating terrorism. I am not from a Coalition Force country (Mexico) but I do respect and thank them. God bless you all.
Alfonso Mijares, Torreon, Mexico
I can't believe what i am reading if it were not for this man and many others like him this disgraceful establishment would not even exist. Just like in America many men have paid the ultimate price for freedom in England as well. Perhaps the receptionist in question should remember this.
michael richardson, longbeach , usa
Its a sad sad shame
lucy, Abingdon, usa
I was saddened by the story. I understand a policy designed to enforce tough standards for unruly people, but how do you know someone is like this until they are, or a they have history of it? What a terrible company decision!
This young man is one of many heroes for those believing in freedom!
Ken Ammerman, Mason, Michigan, USA
I would be interested to learn all the names of all the hotels that are under the American Amusement banner. I am willing to avoid all of their establishments. I am sorry that some poor receptionist got fired so the hotel can avoid blame for this horrible incident.
Bruce Wendland, Harrisonville, US
It really is about time our troops had the respect they deserve from those of us lucky enough to live in relativly safety and enjoying the freedom of speech only these Guys & Girls selfless acts enable us to do.There should be more welcoming parades for when they return from active duty with thanks
Dave Farmer, Broxbourne, England
I think the receptionist should have been fired on the spot. If she or he is so afraid of rowdiness, I have a suggestion, go bury yourselves in your own home. If you want a job dealing with all types of people, than suck it up.
sharon tomal, Baltimore, USA
CPL Stringer can always feel welcome in my home with my family. Do not worry about this type of discrimination as it is becoming more common. CPL Stringer has my support and if he should ever need anything, all he needs to do is to call.
Danny Gordon, Dayton, USA
It's Tommie this and Tommie that and throw the bugger out - But Savior of 'is country when the guns begin to shout.
Kipling had it right 100 years ago.
Christopher Bertrand, Tyler, Texas, USA
This is one of the most disturbing things I have heard in a long time. I appeal to all sane thinking people every where to condemn this outrage. What a bunch of spoiled, pampered cowards these people are.
I am a US Army officer, and I applaud courageous solders from our friends in other nations.
Dale, Salt Lake City, USA
As a wife & vetern of US Military. i find it appoling to hear that any agency would turn away any soldier serving his country. I would boycot the hotel & expect a formal appoligy to CPL Stringer My thoughts & prayers are with Cpl. Stringer & his family during the remainder of his tour in Afganistan
Jamie, Olympia, WA, USA
What a discrace! Without the brave men and women of the military "sleeze bag motels" like this one wouldn't exist. Better of without their kind. I am a proud soldier in the U.S. Army, and I'm proud of Cpl Stringer and his service to his country.
Rick, Parkersburg,
Thank you to the USA, a real disgrace that a hotel has such a discriminating policy. As for the apology, a little weak trying to shift blame on to the receptionist, besides it is your duty to train staff correctly! As for people like don from london, a dispicable comment, show some respect.
Tom, Manchester, England
i would like to say thank you to all my fellow veterans, from all walks of like, thank you for your hard work and dedication to every cause we have endured in our life time. My heart goes out to this hero! We as soldiers of the world must defend each other! Some wont even let us rest our heads.
Jessica, CA, USA
If Cpl. Stringer ever needs a place to stay in the USA I have a home about 30 minutes from Disney World and Universal Studies which we do not use April-November. As a former US Army officer I know there are not many jobs more demanding than that of a soldier. Thank you for your service.
Glenn Gray, Hillsborough, USA
David from watord - It is my understanding he was there assisting with a friends funeral who was killed in action. I'm not sure I understand your question. Is it your contention that if he had lost an arm or leg, he shouldn't be allowed to drive? I lost a leg in Vietnam and drive just fine, thank you
treehood, Vista, Ca., USA
German guys:
You Germans need to realize that the USA has not forgotten WWII. We bailed you out then and we protect you today from radical muslims. You ought to be more respectful of the USA. Or would you prefer that we bring our troops home and allow them to run rampant around the world?
Barb, Green Bay, WI (Titletown!), USA
Why was he driving with a wrist in plaster? Sounds totally irresponsible and dangerous - lucky he didn't swerve run over a child - especially if he was clumsy enough to break it falling out of a truck
Seriously folks, a soldier with a car in Woking (hardly remote) who couldn't find another hotel!
don, london,
The photos, names and addresses of the company owner(s) should be published. That would enable more effecient communication of the distress the soldiers friends and family have felt. to this discrimination.
Afterall this was probably just a miscommunication.
Richard, Pittsburgh, USA
Two things to say....
A disgrace to the hotel for their actions - shame on them but,, a good time to say thanks for those positive comments from the USA in support of the British Army.
It would be good to know that we can all do and say the right things at the right time,
Howard, London, UK
God bless Corp. Stringer! The commander should make it mandatory that any disruptive behavior on public facilities will not be tolerated. The disruptive soldiers have responsibility for causing this problem to one of their own. And shame on this hotel for blaming everything on the receptionist.
Sandy, Florence, USA
Occasionaly the Brits come to the Yakima Training center near my home in Washington State, I want to remind you that you are welcome in our community and at our local Veteran's clubs.
Thanks for your service on behalf of both our countries.
Lon James, Yakima, USA
I'm glad they were well treated in FL. If they had gone to California they would have received the Metro Hotel treatment and in San Francisco run out of town and spit upon.
Denny, Nashville, USA
The hotel should be ashamed. It doesn't appear as though the clerk misunderstood anything. They were following company policy. The hotel did not even offer an apology until they became nervous about public reaction to the story. They are only afraid of how it will impact their pocketbooks.
JRB, Birmingham, usa
To Jay Loveless, USA I say Here, Here! Kipling got it right when he said that and more. The more things change the more they stay the same.
Everett, Austin, TX, USA
As an American who has traveled extensively around the world for business as well as pleasure you can rest assured I will NOT be staying at THAT hotel. Service men and women should be honored by their country. Without them their country would not have safety, security, or freedom. Shame on Metro!
Heather, Dallas, TX, USA
Absolutely outrageous! Boycott Hotel and chain it belongs to!
These men and women in uniform fight for our Freedom and should have utmost respect from all of us.
Marikka Beach, Newark, DE, USA
That Hotel is a Disgrace; I will make it a point not to use that hotel chain whenever I go on holiday in England. I will also let my friends, that is in the US Military living in London know about. I will like to say to Corporal Tomos Stringer Thank you for serving GOD bless.
Paul, Clarksville, TN, USA.
Does anyone wonder what he was doing driving a car with a broken wrist???
David Guilfoyle, Watord,
You're all quick to stand up for these soldiers, but if you've experienced the obnoxious and destructive behaviour that a large majority of them (especially the young ones) display when they are off duty and are out for a party, then you will understand why some hotels don't want their business.
Michael Gibson, Surrey,
To Corporal Stringer and all of his mates, I say you are welcome to stay @ my home in America anytime, no questions asked as we greatly appreciate your service and partnership in the battles we face together.
God bless and protect our combined troops!
Kevin, Reno, USA!
If Corporal Stringer ever finds his way to the States for a visit, my home is open to him. I commend him for his service to his country and to the overall Global War on Terrorism. What happened to him at the hotel in Woking is inexcusible.
Michael, Central PA, USofA
I don't understand this pathetic outcry, mostly from Americans, with a few Australians and Brits thrown in as a topping.
So, the Hotel Management declared their premises off limits for military. Must have had a valid reason. Sorry for Cpl Stringer, wrong profession, wrong place, wrong time.
Klaus Feldner, Cape Town, South Africa
I am an old American Vetran who served in Korea. in my day we soldiers would have gone into that hotel the following day and thrown the whole managing staff into the street. please pardon this if my English Spelling seems American, as I am so far removed from my roots I forgot the English way lol
Larry, Des Arc , Arkansas, United States of America
The local commander should have a word with his troops about the reputation they have earned, athough the hotel employee should have had the good sense to make the distinction between this war hero and a bored local recruit out to let off steam.
Mike, Red Lodge, England
Corp. Stringer, Should you decide to holiday in the USA, I would be most honored if you would consider a stay at our house in Marysville, Ohio. Thank you for your service to humanity.
Steve Erickson, Marysville, USA
I am an American who loves the British. They are a kind, generous and wonderful people who have sacrificed much so that others may be free. And continue to do so in today's world. But I do have a question. Should most of the responses come from my beloved America? Where are the Brit's?
Barry L. Walker, Brandenburg, Kentucky, USA
"the hotel had recently experienced some rather serious incidents involving soldiers from the nearby barracks."
It seems the hotel's ill will toward the military was caused by abuses from the local soldiers. It's a shame that a few bad soldiers spoiled it for everyone.
Bill Clay, Miami, USA
What are their companies in America? I'd be happy to boycott them.
Lori Amaya
Bullard, Texas
Lori, Bullard, United States
This is an outrage! A soldier serves his country risking life and limb for National Interests and this is the thanks that he gets in his own country for accompanying a fallen Comrade? As Soldiers, we are held accountable for our actions and the same should apply to the Metro Staff.............
LTC Ricardo Arispe, San Antonio, Texas
Cpl. Stringer is welcome at our home anytime. God bless all of those who serve.
Steve Anderson, Schaumburg, Illinois, USA
Absolutely disgraceful. It's amazing to me that a British soldier would be shown such disrespect.
I would like to thank Cpl Stringer for his service and sacrifice.
@ Matt in Berlin
That comment coming from a German is priceless. Thanks for the chuckle!
Mark, Birmingham, The United States of America
I just can not believe that this has happened to our Brothers across the pond. I don't care what kind of "problems" you may have had before, one wounded soldier wanting a room should have gotten it. Names and address of all top company should be given to those who want to voice their thoughts.
Ben, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
I find the actions of this so call "hotel" an affront to ALL MILITARY members every where, this specially gores me as an American Air Force retired veteran, England is a place where its military forces should get the best of the best considering the lost that were suffered in its defense.
Eduardo , Merritt Island, United States
I agree with the mother. In this current era it seems like people can easily discriminate against Caucasians and pro-country citizens. Yet the moment people of "Other than Caucasian" cries foul the whole thing is blown out of proportion. Equality to all or none!
Qiu Shan, Rochester, USA
I would need more info. It could be that this garrison town hotel has had bad experiences with local servicemen visiting their hotel. The hotel has a right to protect its property. Each potential customer should be judged on an individual basis. The hotel should respond fully and then be judged.
Wayne, Evansville, IN, USA
Take that Hotel off Priceline. As a matter of fact...All who know about this incident should never go near the establishment.
Tom Woods, Wilkes-Barre Pa., USA
The hotel's side doesn't matter. That is discrimination.
Casey, Canon City, CO, USA
As a Indian born and brought up near an army base in UK and living near one in Japan I have run into many UK & US soldiers. These guys are great - friendly and funny but after a few drinks change. Wrong to discriminate against one decent guy (hotel should make exceptions) but understand the policy
Raj, Tokyo, Japan
I will remember never to stay there.
Ric, Plymouth, MI, USA
Thank you, Gaynor Stringer for your kind words, and thank you patriotic Brits who have been America's true friends and allies. I wish people like this thoughtless hotel manager had the slightest idea of the sacrifices made not just by servicemen but by their families as well.
Fred Zarguna, Boalsburg, PA, USA
Thanks for your service Corp. Stringer!!!!! The Hotel management and staff should be ashamed of themselves. Grow a set , before your country is overrun by the political lefties et al.
AMF, Chicago,
Matt from Berlin: If the American and British Armed Forces wouldn't have put their lives on the line for you and your countrymen then you would be living under the tyrannical control of Adolf Hitler. Take some history lessons and then be grateful for those who are less selfish than you are.
Jeremy, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe
" O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,"
Some things never change. :)
John, Payson, USA
What is the hotel's side of this story? This article doesn't even mention their reasoning...
laurence, Stanford,, USA
Anyone who refuses rooms to members of the military should have their business licenses revoked. I did say licenses - all business licenses they hold should be revoked. They don't deserve to be in business if they hold such disdain for the defenders of the country.
Kendall Price, Auburn, AL, USA
I can't believe that this would happen anywhere. I am an American and proud of anyone and everyone who takes a stand for their country. It may be my military up bringing talking. The UK should learn from our 9-11. It could have been them and how would they treat their military then??
C Straw, Lenapah, OK, USA
Did The Times not contact the hotel's management for their side of the story? I'd like to see this story substantiated in some way before we all boycott it and issue formal complaints through the Ministry of Defence and our MPs.
Kaya Barry, Basingstoke, UK
Banning all soldiers from a Hotel because in the past some have been drunk is the same as banning all football supporters because some were seen fighting, or better still, banning all people from London, (Including Clive Rosenberg), due to a bad experience in the past involving a group of Londoners.
Paddy Ryan, Stirling , Scotland
It is a disgrace for a soldier to be treated like this.
Apologies from America.
Thank you to the brits for your service!
Jane Doe, Ohio, USA
Ever been in a garison town on a bad night? i live in this area. we have a LOT of military here. A lot of them are boystrous, very fit, young men, it can lead to trouble. But this is generalisation, like racial stereotyping. They should have been blocking boystrous people, not soldiers.
Barry, woking, Surrey, uk
I had to read it twice and I still can't believe it. I lived in the UK and it is the last place on earth I would expect such a thing to be legally possible. If you did that here in the States the soldier would end up owning the hotel after suing. Would it be legal if it were a real policy?
Pete, New York, USA
Everyone should boycott this hotel and any business associated with the ownership group. Thank you to Cpl Stringer and every armed forces member protecting the world from terror groups.
Jim Martin , Yukon,OK, USA
I have personally worked with several Senior Enlisted Men from the British Armed Forces. I would not hesitate to allow any of them to spend time in my home. How dare a hotel tell this brave defender of FREEDOM that he is not allowed to stay there.
It is a DISCRACE to Brittan Herself. So Sad.
Sgt M. Fabian USAF, Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, United States of America
Shame on this hotel! Thank God this family received an appropriate welcome in the US. We appreciate Tomos' and his family's sacrifice and dedication to the cause of freedom.
John Futch, Ocala, Florida, USA
I am sorry that there was any link to America with this Hotel. That is not how we treat our brave men and women that are sacrificing so much for so many. I also don't believe them when they said it was a mistake. They should be ashamed of themselves and I hope they realize their mistake.
Paula, san diego, USA
I am ashamed that this company, American Amusements, has our country's name attached to it and hope that they merely borrowed it but if it is an American company I plan to circulate the information to as many people as I know.
Robert, Princeton, USA
The corporation who owns this hotel should be held to account. Something is terribly wrong when a company requires their staff to deny service to someone who risks his life to serve his country. The staff should be ashamed for following such a policy.
Nancy, Washington State, USA
I was born and bred near Woking which was always a
garrison town RMP's at Knaphill; Guards at Pirbright etc.
This hotel needs to be blacked. Ian the son of a Canadian
soldier buried in Brookwood cemetery!
Bruce Hastings , Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France
The disgusting thing is that these hotel people are nothing more than cowards who would immediately scream for help from the military if they were threatened. Unfortunately, we have some just like them here in the U.S.A. But that's the lot of hero's, to protect and defend cowards and weaklings.
Terry Waldoch, Detroit, U.S.A.
I live in W. Palm Bch. Florida. I do not want your Coporal Stringer in a Hotel here either. He is welcome here, in my home. When I visit, I now know where not to stay....at the Metro Hotel.
George, W. Palm Beach, USA
I would like to thank Corporal Stringer for his sacrifice and his honor. I am sad to see that one of his comrades died while fighting for freedom across the world. I find It pathetic that the Hotel would have no comment only to blame It on a clerk. Thank You to the British for being a true partner!
Jim Karthaus, Ballwin, USA
Yes, this act is despicable and our servicemen deserve better. However, it is no surprise either. Since leaving the Army in 2004, I have experienced discrimination in the workplace as a result of my background. But why do US commentators have to blame 'the Left'? They don't understand the UK.
Jack, London, UK
People should keep tying up the phone lines until they go out of business
fred, norfolk, USA
I am repulsed by the lack of respect for our service men and women who are putting themselves into harms way to protect this great country and abroad. I for one salute you all for you services, here and abroad. God Bless you all!
Kim, Clearwater , USA
A similar appalling policy appeared in Australia during the Vietnam conflict of which I am a veteran.I thought the World had moved past this dreadful treatment of service personnel and reading this article saddens me.I too thank you Corporal Stringer and your colleagues for your dedicated service.
Brian B, Morayfield, Australia
As a resident of Woking, it shames me, that this brave young man who handles himself with grace and dignity, fights for my right to walk the streets without covering my head, is treated in this way. The company excuse is feable and we need to examine their trading licence.
Toni, Woking, UK
As a UK civilian police officer working alongside US, British and other coalition troops here in Baghdad, I was disgusted to read this story. These young men and women deserve our respect and admiration, and should be welcome in any hotel at home!
Phil, Baghdad, Iraq
americans are not "militaristic nutcases" but support the human beings that protect us from "terrorist nutcases", it is a hard enough job without someone safely sitting in a hotel, giving them grief, remember we were attacked on american soil, that was an act of war-we want no more terror attacks
cindy, mount vernon, usa
Im a USARMY sergeant angered by this story...I can bet my hard earned dollar that this receptionist is still working there. I salute my brother in arms Cpl Stringer for serving his country and hope his leadership petition for this hotel to be put off limit to service members
solomon, honolulu, usa
In America we have our own serious issues with blatant hostility to the brave soldiers who protect our freedom (i.e. San Francisco). Please know that most of us in the US view the UK as forever our brothers. I would proudly send my son to defend your country. How many of you would do the same?
R Wagner, Long Valley, NJ, USA
From "Tommy" by Rudyard Kipling:
" For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!
Steve Jordan, Scottsdale AZ, USA
I am an American and am embarrassed that this company uses our name.
I do not accept the apology. The manager was following the policy of his company. Many wars to remove freedoms are fought without guns as this incident shows.
Please identify and boycott all companies associated.
Terri, Dallas Texas, USA
This is a disgrace. An apology is not enough, this courageous man spend a night in his car. Hotel management should at least treat him to a weekend all expenses paid. Why is there no e-mail barage to show them the eroor of their ways and get them to do the right thing? He puts his life on line!!!
Jan, Dubai, UAE
fantastic response/support from US but what about the plight of UK soldiers who occupy 10% of our prisons, is this the
way we treat battle scarred vets, they need support/housing
financial security, this is the real tradgedy
mike, solihull,
to Matt in Berlin --
Americans (and UK) are militaristic nutcases? I'd call that a rather ironic statement coming from someone from Germany. You are familiar with the history of your own country, right? Not to mention all the money the miltaristic nutcases spent keeping the Russians out of WG.
B Fritz, Colorado, USA
To all of the British families that serve in the armed forces: Thank You!! As an American I appreciate your comraderie and support.
Alex, Portland, OR, USA
I remember my father being refused a room when I was a child because he was in the military. After his serving as a pilot in WW II and the Korean war and having come back from Vietnam. I am third generation career military, and find there are isolated pockets of that kind of bigotry everywhere.
Stephen McConnell, Villa Rica, Georgia, USA
It is truly represensible for a hero, fighting for freedom in the world to be turned away from any place of business, They should be boycotted!
Didi Lima, Las Vegas, USA
In response to Matt, Berlin, Germany:
It's not the soldiers who cause the problem. It is our elected governments. Don't confuse the two. Soldiers should be praised for their sacrifice.
Andrew, Texas, USA
I am ashamed that an American company would do this. They would also do this over here if they could get away with it. The people of the UK should boycott American Amusements until they leave the UK. Apologies are not good enough.
Jeff, Apple Springs, TX, USA
Matt (Berlin) Perhaps we should just bring all our militaries home and let the jihadists run amok all over the world. If our military is on our shores there will be no terror attacks in America, but this will open the door for attacks anywhere else in the world. Be careful what you ask for.
John, Denver, USE
This is an absolute disgrace. The soldier in question was not in uniform and wounded due to heroic service to his country. The management staff of the hotel should be fired immediately and replaced with people who can understand the importance of treating members of the military with respect
Chris Hanson, Chicago, USA
Playing devil's advocate: If the hotel has had trouble in the past with the area soldiers, as the article states, I can understand the clerk's response. However, I'm sure the soldier explained why he was there and he should have been given a room. Life isn't black & white, be flexible!
Teresa , Signal Mountain, USA
My son and three of his friends also had a similar experience in the Weatherspoons in Guildford a few months ago. They ordered food and drink for their lunch and when asked for ID they produced their Army ID cards. The staff then informed them that they could not serve them.
J Collingwood, HULL, UK
Was it an American soldier, or why are most comments on here from U.S. Americans? Militaristic nutcases. If the American (and, by extension, UK) militaries wouldn't create so many problems in the world, maybe they would be better respected.
Matt, Berlin, Germany
I have never heard of a man so shockingly used as Cpl. Stringer. Should he find himself in my town, Huntsville, AL, USA, he could have bed, board, kit, and funds for the asking, and, like enough, he wouldn't even have to ask! For shame.
Clayton Jones, Huntsville, AL USA
Clayton Jones, Huntsville, USA
The company is probably operated by Muslims...From an American Veteran to my UK brothers and sisters, it's amazing for whom we fight isn't it?
Cpl. Stringer, wounded in battle, yet denied a bed for the night by the very people he and his brothers in arms fight to protect - amazing.
Tom, Oak Creek, USA,
Terrible acts of ignorance. Thank you for your service to all the men and women in the armed forces.
Hamilton, Austin, TX, US
To Tommy in Berlin, and others of like mind: Don't forget that it is primarily the American and British forces which are putting their lives on the line to protect your rights and keep you safe from terrorists so that you can have the freedom to express your animosity toward them at this site.
Rob, West Chester, Ohio, USA
I just can't believe it. Please boycott this company i don't care if it was a mistake or not. To bad you lose.
R Olsen
richard Olsen, Mesa, USA
Outragious! The hotel chain should be boycotted until suitable reparations have been made,
Donna Walker, Effingham, England
I think it's time to get this out to the US and make them change their name - I object to any company calling itself "American Amusements" and having a policy of this kind. If this is NOT their policy, why didn't they make the clerk redundant for being a fool?
J Boardman, Fort Worth, USA
Metro Hotels also run other hotels and bowling etc around the Uk. Boycott the lot.
Maybe also the private equity outfit behind this mob (presumably there is one) will have more ethics than they do too. Fire the Chief executive and get an ex-soldier in to run this operation
Simon, Watford,
American Amusements must be a San Francisco, California based company.
B.A., Boston, U.S.,
"We sleep safe In our beds because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those that would do us harm." - George Orwell
To deny one of those rough men a soft bed is cruel irony. God bless all our soldiers. Your reward will be in another place, in another time, but a much higher power.
John, Jacksonville, USA
God bless the military. And I applaud the fact that Americans, today, realize who the "real" heros are. This hotel should apologize.
Mauren, orlando, usa
We do love our soliders in America but certain cities in the US have been known to discriminate. They receive a lot of bad PR so most of the time they don't dare to treat our men and women that way.
Thank you for your service Corporal Stringer!
Chris , Wichita, USA
I travel around the country for business and if I need to drive an extra 50 miles I would.... I rather pay for the gas then let this hotel get any of my money.....this is a disgrace
mimi, New Jersey, USA
That hotel represents what is wrong with the narrow-minded people on this planet.
Shame on them...
Bravo Corporal Springer - keep up the great work you are doing and have always done.
Zapper, Kingwood TX, USA
This is pretty typical of how soldiers are treated in this country. Many places - bars and clubs, for instance - have a blanket ban on them. Also, it is virtually impossible to get credit from anywhere, with most having to use their parents' address.
Serve my country? No, thanks.
Martin, Wiltshire,
Fifty years ago as a young Sergeant at Fort Hood, TX, USA, I learned a short poem. The version I learned is:
"God and Soldiers we adore,
In time of trouble, not before.
With peace restored and all things righted,
God is forgotten and the soldier slighted."
I believe it was written by a Tommy.
Jim Black, San Angelo, TX, USA
God bless Cpl. Stringer and every single member of the British armed forces! Thanks for your service. It's a shame that there are people in our two nations that are not able to distinguish between the soldiers and people who set policy. I hope you boycott and shame that hotel to their knees.
John, Omaha, Nebraska, USA
I really hope this isn't an American company, the shame for treating a member of the British services this way would be appalling! In America we value our military for the incredible service they provide our country. May I suggest a boycott of the Hotel?
Elisabeth, Los Angeles, California
I wonder if one day i'll read about nurses or school teachers, or heck, even sanitation workers being moved to the front of the roller coaster line. There are so many underappreciated people that serve their country and communities every day. Anyone offering to pay their hotel bill?
Zon Hall, Texas, USA
Mr. Sringer thank you so much for serving and for making people safer all over the world. I ask all British citizens to boycott this hotel. What has happened is shameful. I want to thank everyone that has spoken up in this man's defense and expressed their outrage. God Bless his family as well.
Paula Higgins , Marietta, USA
Nightclubs in Wilmington, NC have done the same thing to US Marines and I trust they are feeling the pinch of an angry public about now or at least I hope so. This is inexcusable and the management of this hotel should be fired, the desk clerk got his/her attitude from somewhere.
John, Asheville, NC, USA
"Makin' mock 'o uniforms that guards you when you sleep is cheaper than those uniforms, and they're starvation cheap" . Its a crying shame that some things and some people never change.
Jay Loveless, Sheridan, TX, USA
I'd be interested to know who the owners of American Amusments really are! Anyone want to venture a guess? My hat is off to the calmness of the British people. If that happened here, they couldn't get their sheets delivered for all the pickets outside.
Tom, Wilmington, USA
Once there were signs here that read "No dogs or soldiers allowed". I guess someone at that so-called hotel found one and put it up for all to see. I know there are laws in Britian against this sort of thing and I would hope a full investigation will take place.
S. Hampton Truelove US Army, Ret
Scott Truelove, Lawton, OK, USA
If Corporal Stringer every makes it Atlanta, GA USA we have an extra bedroom with a king bed & private bath. UK & US soldiers protect the world and we should all grateful theur are men & women who protect us (proudly - btw).
God Bless each & everyone one of you!
Mark & Sally, Atlanta, GA, USA
I believe I speak the truth when I say that here in America there are 300 million beds for British soldiers to sleep in, should they ever need somewhere to rest.
Thank you, Corporal Tomos.
Dan Takhesh, Richmond, Virginia, United States
What a horrible injustice done to this fine young man. Just because the word "American" is in the name, doesn't necessarily mean it's an American owned company. One should investigate further to determine the true ownership of this organization... we may be surprised.
Brenda, Sacramento, USA
I am so very sorry this happened to this soldier. I will also write to american amusement with a verbal protest. They must be shut down. What kind of people are they to do this to someone who risk their life, so this stupid company has the freedom to operate.
melanie, mobile, usa
I am truely sorry that your soldiers are not appreciated. Some people just have no brains to realize that it is because of soldiers that people are even able to have a business. I see British Airman here at the local base in Arizona, glad you are here. You are most welcome.
Tommy, Tucson, USA
I believe it borders on criminal that a petty bureaucratic hotel clerk can denigrate a soldier in this way. People need to be reminded it is those very soldiers who are fighting to protect their right to act like asses.... God Bless all our troops
James A. Hammer, Pittsburgh, USA
Good God, soldier or not, you don't make a man with his arm in a cast sleep in his car! What is wrong with those people?
Janice, Los Angeles CA, USA
Dean, Southhampton:
Say something! If this is considered "a common policy in the UK which is routinely carried out by pubs, clubs and hotels accross the country" then it should be broadcasted. This behavior should not ever be a "routine".
Rachel, McAllen, Tx, USA
Rowdy behavior is not limited to military personnel; it is a serious social problem across the UK. BUT, you don't see hotels profiling and rejecting access to all 17-25 years olds as a group. There is no excuse for this hotel's policy! If only servicemen could choose who they defend, protect, serve
RSM, Aberdeen, Scotland (UK) via Texas
this is what all the idiots want, when they need defence during a war the military is just grand. let their butts get in a bind and they suck up. as long as they feel safe they treat the military like a stepchild. FREEDOM IS NOT FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Britain is just like europe now. the time will come.
j.c.b., marshall, U.S.A.
Disgusting and Pathetic. It really is unbelievable that a hotel would treat a member of the its own armed forces in such a way. Normally a hotel might give a free upgrade to a member of the military during a time of war, not deny service. Shame on Metro Hotel.
Steven C, Washington, DC, USA
Was the employee disciplined in anyway if the "mistake" was not company policy? Has the employee been made to express regret? Neither is mentioned here so I assume not!
Shawn, schoharie, usa
I wouldn't be too quick to point fingers at the Brits without taking a look at yourself first. In October, 1967 when I shipped out for Viet Nam ffrom Ft. Lewis WA, it was policy to transport us to the Tacoma airport at 0300, and take us in a back way to avoid the protestors there to insult us.
Stephen Kuckelman, Aurora, Colorado, United States
I hope the hotel is boycotted.
As far as brave fighting men choosing a career, I would like to know what "John" does as a career? Career or not the people that chose to serve are your nation's BEST and deserve respect.
Receptionists have no authority to make decisions like that.
Mary, Charlottesville VA, USA
Absolutely disgusting!! I would hope that people will avoid this hotel for a few months.
But as Shirley Bassey said.....'this is NOT the England I grew up in'.....
J.S.Vazifdar, Meredith, USA
I am hope this is an isolated incident. Here in the US, hotels offer military discounts. DisneyWorld has Shades of Green, just for militaries and their families. The Busch theme parks offer discounts and other things for soldiers and families.
Marlene, Alexandria,VA, USA
Here in Dixie we have always honored our heroes. The staff that turned down this brave British cousin of ours fighting for all freemens rights and lives should be fired and ridiculed. I`d prefer to personally fly over there and give them a beat down. I love the mother country and I`m furious.
Mike Pearson, Talahassee, Florida, U.S.A.
im glad the hotel stuck by its rules! afetrall ules are not to be broken right!
mo, london, uk
How is this even possible? A wounded soldier attending a mate's funeral should have been given a room at no charge.
Danny Brown, Gulfport, MS, United States
A poster stated that this person "chose" his career and he saw no problem with the ignorance of this hotel, well as a PROUD Army wife I must say this soldiers "choice" is the reason he can post such ignorance and I can post supporting our men and women. Thank You Service Men and Women!
T.Dunn, Indianapolis, USA
Remember that it is not the people of the UK in general that created this hostile environment. We as need to focus on the ones that did. EVERYONE needs to stand up and defend our brothers and sisters in arms. Companies like this one needs to be run out of business. Hit them where they care most $$
Bruce , Puyallup, USA
Public opinion has been outraged by this shoddy treatment of an injured soldier. What does this same Public Opinion have to say about the shoddy and miserly treatment of all our serving troops and ex-troops by the penny-pinching UK Government?. Poor equipment, poor family housing, etc. What"s new?
Dick Hardman, Taunton, UK
As a Yank, I am ashamed and embarrassed that a company with "American" in it's name would treat a soldier, or anyone, in the way that they treated Corporal Stringer. The majority of us in the US greatly appreciate and are proud of the support & sacrifice we receive from our British allies.
Andrew Y, Dallas, USA
Absolutely Shameful. The Metro Hotel and it's owner owe more than an apology to this soldier and his family! How dare they!!! I will remember this if I ever come across this Hotel and they will NOT get my business.
Sarah , Cary, NC, USA
Companies like this should not be allowed to practice business. The free market economy that supports this business is only in existence because of our soldiers!!!! What a disgrace!! I say boycott the company.
Albert Winchester, Huntsville, Alabama, USA
Anyone can apologize after the fact and feel sorry............so what. If the soldier and his family are not compensated dutifully, then I would hope when the world comes to London for the next Summer Olympics, that this hotel would be completely empty. Receptionist mistake is an E Z cop-out.
Max, Hutchinson, KS, USA
James of Denver: I spent two years in the military and treat soldiers and ex-soldiers nearly every day, so I'm speaking from an informed position. Your observations highlight the presumptions typical of knee-jerk responses. Simply being enrolled in the post doesn't make you a hero - actions do.
Thomas, Newcastle,
I firmly believe that the hotel has the right to deny service to anyone for any reason. That being said, I hope they go out of business tomorrow due to their lousy attitude and lying officials. This brave soldier was hurt in action, and grieving for a comerade. He didn't need this on top of it all!
Robb, Arlington, TX, USA
There are at least three other hotels less than a mile up the road from The Metro. I wonder why he didn't get in his car and drive to them.
Robin, London, UK
Shame on any company that refuses service to any of our brave boys and girls that are fighting abroad to keep them safe at home.
I don't know about the UK but this has law suit written all over it here in the US.
God Bless Us All
Curtis McGraw, Burlington, Iowa, USA
I think its a disgrace that a hotel would do this to a member of the armed forces. The fact that it is a company policy as opposed to an isolated incident makes it even more eggregious. Corporal Stringer, thank you for your service to the UK and the free world. You deserve far better treatment.
Tony, Maryland, USA
He's a Hero, not A thief, treated he should be treated like one.First Class all the way !
martin evans, shreveport, U.S.A.
I'm a veteran and have dealt with unruly Soldiers. You must listen to the local population and they seem angry. Military Police and their chain of command need to put the fear of God into these young troops. The uniform is an honor to wear not a right. HOWEVER this hotel is a disgrace. God bless UK.
Ryan, Manhattan, USA
you brits have gotten so whacky, makes me wish we had fought with the germans in WW2
clay, new york, USA
I find it incomprehensible that a Company can be ALLOWED to discriminate against the armed forces, absolutely disgusting !! He should have been given a discount not turned away....and I DONT believe the line about the member of staff 'misunderstanding'.
Carol, Leicester, UK
i will never stay at this hotel and will tell all my friends and fellow employees, oh i do work for an airline and travel alot this place will not get my business. Our service man and woman should be highly respected for putting their lives on the line for our freedom.
debbie, phoenix, usa
This sounds like San Francisco, aka American Bay Of Pigs.
Tom
Tom Williams III, Kennesaw, Georgia
Metro Palace Court Hotel part of American Amusements Ltd. Bournemouth Property
Should be blacklisted worldwide for such bizzare behavior.
AL FITZPATRICK, NAPERVILLE, IL, USA
Shame on Metro Hotel and their corporate owner! A British soldier can stay in my home anytime.
Robert Smith, Dallas,TX, USA
As a Yank and a friend of our British allies, I am ashamed that this dump of a hotel has an American affiliation. Please know that I am grateful for men like Corporal Stringer and the countless other brave Brits who have fought side by side with us for a century to defend Western civilization.
Gene Mancuso, Philadelphia, PA, USA
The hotel's website last night was advertising for a receptionist at their Woking Hotel and also a Duty Manager. The ads might not be related, but ...
Elizabeth Harvey, Dunstable,
I am quite shocked so many Brits, like so many Americans, have such contempt for their military. Are the days of a proud Britain over? I sincerely hope and pray that this forum is not indicative of general population's opinion. I
Walker, Brea, California, United States
As an American soldier in Germany I found all the folks in The British Isles extremely cordial during a 3-week holiday there. Just as a few 'ugly Americans' or a few 'ugly soldiers' shouldn't skew our image of either, so too, the actions of a single 'ugly hotel' isn't the norm I am sure.
Brad Melton, Powersite, Missouri
He has been treated worse than a criminal. As criminals don't have to carry around i.d. pointing out that fact, presumably they are generally welcome to stay! Surely admission decisions should be individual: if ANYONE was very scruffy/rowdy/drunk/known to be a troublemaker fine, refuse them.
Margaret, Cambridge, England
What the hell is wrong with the UK? That soldier fought for you and your country. He should, at the very least, be treated like an upstanding citizen. People that follow a practice of "military off limits" should be ashamed. Countries are made and defended by folks like him. Astonishing.
Todd, Richmond, Virginia, USA
Why are we allowing this hotel to go unprosecuted. They are in breach of every human rights act that you can name as well as the discrimination laws in this country. I hope that the people of this country boycott this hotel, the Metro Hotel, Woking, Surrey.
Karen, London, UK
As someone who grew up in Woking, I can understand the hotel's policy. There are alot of problems with squaddies coming into Woking from the nearby base in Aldershot, drinking too much and causing trouble. You learn to steer well clear of them...
VS, London,
Several have suggested the hotel would have been justified if it had had such a policy, since so many soldiers get drunk and rowdy. Barring Cpl Stringer on for this reason would, in the States, be called profiling. Maybe in the UK too.
Jim, Worthington, USA
To Tommy, Berlin, Germany:
Yes, Americans (like me) do reply because we feel a kinship with our British allies. Yes, we do feel patriotism and we do believe in the causes of freedom & democracy. It's sad that apparently you have become so cynical that you do not.
By the way, the surge worked!
KG, Arlington, TX, USA
I hope no one ever books a room in that hotel again. To turn away a wounded solider serving your country is just sickening. This is something that would never happen in America and if it did, that hotel might as well just close up shop, as they'd be out of business.
Jack, Los Angeles, USA
He has been treated worse than a criminal. As criminals don't have to carry around i.d. pointing out that fact, presumably they are generally welcome to stay! Surely admission decisions should be individual: if ANYONE was very scruffy/rowdy/drunk/known to be a troublemaker fine, refuse them.
Margaret, Cambridge, England
One more thing to Tommy, Berlin, Germany -
Our soldiers (British & American) are protecting YOU from Muslim extremists too. Remember that.
KG, Arlington, TX, USA
I don't think that anyone in the military wants "special treatment." I think that they just want to be treated fairly. They protect our countries because cowards like you will not
Ben, Washington DC, USA
Regardless of career choices etc......It would appear that the Metro Hotel in Woking, Surrey, has done itself a great disservice in the eyes of the general public.
It would be interesting to be able to check their booking figures in six months or so.
David, Adelaide, South Australia
Nobody has suggested "preferential" treatment only "equal" treatment. Shame some readers can't actually read!
James, Guildfrod, UK
We'll never know the entire story. There were other hotels in the area, so he could have stayed there. If the hotel does not want military personnel staying there, then there should be a prominent sign indicating such. Of course, we know why there isn't.
Al, Washington, DC, USA
The excuse the hotel gave was hollow. How dare they disrespect one of the men or women who make their lives tolerable by the freedoms they fight so hard to protect. The hotel and their managers should be ostracized for the actions they promote.
Dixielee Tripp, Weiser, USA
If you treat your soldiers poorly, you get poor soldiers. If that's what you want, then that's OK. You can always call the US soldier anytime to bail you out again.....and again......and........
Marc, Pa,
Her son is a hero and deserves better. Europe has always had a personality that looks down on military, and which gets them into a world war every 50 years or so. If it was not for American involvement, there is little doubt in my mind that Putin would be looking to push into Europe...
Tim Jones, Atlanta, USA
What a disgrace, some of the comments that are being left.
A job? These people are "serving voluntarily" to protect your freedoms. They sure did not serve in the military to get rich.
Some people (I hope most) actually love their country.
Yes, they do deserve special treatment as a - thank you!
Don, Annapolis, USA
Now I understand why the British Empire collapse all around your pitiful heads. I am appalled by you people and so proud that we broke away in 1776. Shame, Shame on you people to condemn those who are willing to give up their lives so you can sleep peacefully. England still sleeps.
jasper houigan, jeffeersonville, usa
Just a job, I am amazed by your antipathy. Their career choice risks life and limb to protect your freedom to spew venom. Do us all a favor, since you don't have the courage or conviction to make the stand they have and all you can do is try to belittle them just say nothing at all.
Chris, Myrtle Beach, United States
Since when did you have to give your occupation to get a hotel room ? Anyhow, next time he will no doubt conceal his job from people like this and perhaps in time being a solldier will become too `shameful` to be considerd as a career option for the next generation . What will we do then ?
Steve, Portsmouth,
John writes: "So why expect pref treatment because of your career choice?"
Since when is being allowed to stay in a hotel if you are willing to pay concsiderd pref. treatment?
If I would have known better I would have thought I was reading about the French.
Gary, Ireton, USA
Bad behaviour? Where in the story is it said bad behaviour was involved or that he asked for pref treatment?
Jim, Dundee, UK
To Thomas of Newcastle:
Yes, being in the Armed Forces is a job but it's a job that YOU decided not to take. It's a job that requires sacrifice, more than
the paper cut you may receive at work. Defending your way of life.
Oooops. We do this in America. It's a shame some in England
don't.
James, Denver, USA
This is the kind of thing that really, really makes me mad! This Hotel should be shut down. This is one of the worst forms of discrimination. These are men and women who are fighting for everyones freedom. God Bless Them. They care about their Country. So support THEM.
Lynda Levesque, Sparta, U.S.A
"I was on his side till now", "All due respect", etc., are insincere platitudes by those who don't have a clue what these soldiers do. Try to imagine a world where these troops aren't protecting you. If you don't give them respect, you don't deserve respect (or customers, in the case of the hotel).
C. Teal, Troy, NY
I see a whole lot of usa posters more then happy to support the brit soldier, but many comments of brits that dont support him.
this is a shame, why would you not support your own soldiers?? I will salute a bit soldier any day of the week, yes I am an American. We love the brits, I dont understand.
Marilyn, naples, USA
Being a soldier doesn't make you a hero. It's a job. As such, it isn't grounds for discrimination, but neither should it be grounds for special treatment. This career attracts a range of people, with different personalities and motivations - many are power hungry jerks and they earn their stereotype
Thomas, Newcastle, England
To Sara R.:
I think what the Corporal's mother meant was there would be a massive backlash if someone had been refused because of their skin color, religious beliefs, etc.
Mike, Minneapolis, USA
I'm sorry, but to all those supporting "the brave fighting man" I have to remind that to go into the forces is a career decision, it's not forced on anyone. So why expect pref treatment because of your career choice? And fully understandable to restrict entry if evidence points towards bad behaviour
John, London, UK
UK/USA - Please resurrect the old WWII "Military Off Limits" placards and place "on" the doors of any business that does military discrimination - we are at war. Let all know what type of business this is so they can avoid patriotism.
Kuby, USN Vietnam Vet, Sidney, OH, USA
In the USA we recognize the difference between the brave soldiers who took an oath to follow orders and the leaders who abuse the use of force by starting preventitive wars. The soldiers are heroes, this is a disgrace.
JB, Atlanta, USA
Im very, very angry. Its discrimination. They would never get away with it if it was against someone of ethnic origin.
That is what the soldier's mother said about this issue.
What has any of this got to do with people of ethnic origin pray tell?
As for the soldier I was on his side 'till now...
Sara Raphael, MANCHESTER, UK
I'm afraid, that as a soldier who left the army last year, I can tell you that this is a common policy in the UK which is routinely carried out by pubs, clubs and hotels accross the country.
Dean, Southampton, England
All due respect to all servicemen, though making a living of killing, risking their lives for nations they trust; one wonders that most of comments here, british paper, are made by americans?? For those STILL believing in the causes of "fredoom" & "democracy" in Iraq, Afghanistan, please wake up.
Tommy, Berlin, Germany
simply disgusting, what a slap in the face for such a commited and dedicated young man. Quite right that people have phoned in.
Chris, Rochdale, UK
Can everyone calm down a little here. Much as I am as disgusted as the rest of you that someone should be turned away from a hotel simply for his job it seems to me that blaming the British nation for the actions of one hotel seems a little extreme.
Every Briton I know would also be shocked.
Olivia Ryan, Brighton, UK
Boycott the Metro Hotel.
I will
Richard, London,
Aldershot is just a few miles away, and the army and staff have a poor reputation for general behaviour in Guildford and Woking. Many nightclubs are often closed early due to the excessive fighting and binge drinking these 'soldiers' partake in. I can understand why management would be hesitant.
Gemma Vickers-Seth, London, UK
The Metro is right to apologize and ought to make amends to Cpl. Stringer. However, lets not pretend that he was "forced" to sleep in his car. There's a Holiday Inn a couple of blocks away and several other hotels in the area that no doubt would have been happy to accommodate Cpl. Stringer.
Tom, Birmingham, AL, US
If that is their policy, they could at least admit it, instead of blaming it on the receptionist.
Sam, Richmond,
Beyond the obvious, what is most appalling here is the automatic and blatent fib that the staff had somehow "got it wrong". No-one 'accidentally' bars the whole military, he / she had been obviously been told to turn away potentially troublesome squaddies and now they've hung him / her out to dry.
angie, norwich, england
I'm astonished at how this brave young man has been treated. Have you heard of the stories of First Class Airline passengers here in the US giving up their seats for our brave soldiers in uniform? On one flight, the entire First Class cabin moved to the Economy Class cabin for our brave hero's.
John M., Las Vegas, USA
I was stunned when I read this article! I'm a USAF retiree, and my heart goes out to the Corporal. Thank you, Corporal Stringer, for your service, and I'm terribly sorry you had to put up with such a ridiculous policy!
Dave D., San Antonio, USA
As a US Marine who has trained alongside the British Royal Marine Commandos, I can say that they are some of the finest, most honorable, devoted, and professional servicemen that I have ever encountered. They truly are our brothers-in-arms and deserve BOTH our countries' utmost respect and gratitude
Jon, Jacksonville, NC, USA
God bless you for your service to your country, and god bless you for being in the profession of arms. I hope more people in the UK start to appreciate thier soldiers for all they do.
H. Knudsen, Baghdad, Iraq
Thank you for your service to your country! I hope the American company takes note and changes staff at the Metro! This treatment to the military service member was despicable and very, very wrong!
James Hughes, Madison, MS, USA
I can't believe this!!! I work to the USA Military and was outraged when I saw this article. If any hotel in the US were to treat a soilder in such a way it would be a huge uproar. They are out there defending us so we can have our freedom. Thanks to everyone who serves.
Kristina J., San Diego, CA, USA
Americans respect ALL the military veterans from any country.
My husband is a veteran of the US military wounded in combat and the British military veterans are welcome in our country, in our great state of New Mexico and our home ANYTIME.
s. rogers, rio rancho , USA
Shame on the Metro Hotel and shame on "American Amusements".
Walter Hettinger, Baltimore, Maryland, USA
I would hope that a little more investigation is done on this hotel. If in fact this was company policy and not just some commie desk clerk acting like a typical liberal, then public pressure should be such that Metro Hotel must close down this and any other hotels operated under their ownership.
Jim McCall, Waterford, PA, USA
If you read the review for the Metrro Hotel on TripAdvisor this soldier had a lucky escape.
John, Bangkok, Thailand
I am the mother of a soldier. Everyone should protest by never staying at this place!!
denise higgins , dawsonville, usa
Too bad there is a large contingent of folks here in the USA who act the same way. Thanks for those in leadership positions who understand the dangerous world we live in. Those leaders are all around us, from those who raise money for the troops families to those unsung who give a place in line.
Steve, Indy, USA
Simply, no one should ever sign in at this hotel, again!
Donald L Weimer, East Mckeesport, USA
Disgusting. I'm outraged he would be treated this way. Men and women of the military deserve all the good things we can offer them. They have more than earned our respect and gratitude. This man is a hero and needs to be treated as such. More so than any celebrity or president or royal family member
Anna, GA, USA
As an American who served two years in your country gave witness to the dedication and professionalism of your military. It's a military rich in tradition and pride in uniform. I am horrified any business could turn away a man in uniform especially one such as your CPL Stringer. I'd buy him a pint.
Mark Leitch, North Las Vegas, NV, USA
Corporal Stringer, you're welcome in my home anytime. In America we honor our heros, and we'll honor yours, too.God bless our UK brothers in uniform.
Pete, Orange County,NY, USA
Exactly what I have come to expect in PC britain. This is quite frankly a National Disgrace.
Dave, Chorley,
In the US we have a program that deals with this. Military, down to the installation level If a business discriminates against a service member because he is in the military - the Board has the authority to put that business/corporation off limits to all military. That can mean lost monies quickly!
MAJ Randall K Faulkner, Ft Gordon, GA, USA
Some of you may be interested in the web site for Metro Hotel, so here it is.

Hey folks, here's American Amusements contact info.... they are a part of Big Apple Entertainment Centres (note the spelling, not 'American')

On behalf of my nephew who's going back to Iraq for a third time this fall.......... Go Get'm.
Thanks.
brian, los angeles,
The comment about the US is partially true. There are those of us that value the freedom that these soldiers won and preserved for us. And there are those who would just as soon spit on them. There are people within our own country that hate it and wish to destroy it.
Carl Williams, Lousiville, USA
Had this taken place in the United States, I would say the receptionist must be a Democrat ! Be that as it may, Corporal Stringer should have been given the room at a discount rate instead of being turned away. Those who serve to protect the freedom of their countrymen deserve at least a "Thank You"
Bob Gilbert, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
Would they have turned down prince William as well
Joe, Louisville, Ky
As an American and something of an Anglophile, I find this unfortunate. Given the proud history and traditions of HM armed forces, I find it hard to believe that serving men and women in your country aren't treated with more respect. Please tell me that this is a highly atypical incident.
Bob, Seattle, USA
The British people fought Hitler for almost 3 years before we Americans arrived. I am appalled at how that Hotel has treated this soldier...and I am grateful the UK still has a few Churchills in society to stand up for this lad.
Greg L. Winchell, Marysville,WA., USA
Absolutely incredible that some feel so comfortable taking advantage of the freedom that is provided by those in the armed forces. That hotel does not deserve to be given the patronage of a member of the military. Shame on them!
Kristen, St. Louis, USA
Why do they have the right to refuse anyone service? I wonder what was the problem beside the fact he was military? Thats an unusual policy. Good luck with that.
I worked at a hotel in Canada a few years ago where the British Soldiers came up from the base to stay and party at our rooms. It was fun
Paul, New York City, USA
I am returning to Afghanistan for my third tour soon and will again give thanks to our righteous British, Canadian, and Australian colleages helping us fight those who threaten Western Civilization. I hope all in Great Brtain stand behind those in your country who sacrifice so much.
Nelson, Tampa, FL, USA
My uncle rode his B24 into the channel fighting to save Britian from Hitler. What a waste of his life. Britain, you;ve given your pride and birthrights away in the interest of political correctness and progressive ideology.
Your soldiers are welcome here in America.
Rustin Chrisco, Bentonville, USA
I salute and thank Corporal Stringer for his brave service and his sacrifice for his country and for freedom loving and freedom enjoying people everywhere. Thank you sir, and God bless you.
Judith Huggett, Longwood Florida, USA
In the U.S. it is common practice for a citizen to walk up to a man or woman dressed in military garb and to say, "thank you for your service to our country."We owe our ability to go along in our daily lives to those who would sacrifice their lives for our freedom.Let's shut down that hotel.
Lainie, Malden, USA
What has happened to Great Britian! As a proud nephew and grandson of men who have served in the British Army I am saddened by the apathy of (some) of its citizens deplorable disposition toward your heros who have sacraficed so much. Good people of Great Britian, do not stand for this! God Bless!
Dave, Washington D.C., USA
Our armed forces protect our freedoms. One freedom is the right to protest.A protest outside aforementioned hotel? Yes.
In China soldiers are admired and protected by law. Living permanently in Mianyang we experienced how soldiers are heroic. After the earthquake they fought nature herself and won
Ralph Johnson, Mianyang,Sichuan, China
Corporal Stringer, this American was appalled and saddened to read about your experience. It angers me a veteran of your caliber had to endure such apathy and indifference. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. God Bless you and your family!
Jay Crawford, Kansas City, USA
i am a former American Marine and i think its horrible that our brave British allies are treated this way. God forgive that the American and Royal marines ever sneak a party into this hotel. repair bills would be astronomical!!!!!!!!! ooorah to the Corps! both American and Royal!!!!!!!
victor, huntsville al, usa
I can not believe a business establishment would treat a wounded war veteran in such a callous way in his time of grief and need. I can't believe they would treat anyone that way. I am ashamed that they are an "American" business.
Jim, Baytown, USA
this is sad...It IS different in the US. There were a dozen british marines at a Baseball game in Phoenix yesterday. They were treated as quasi-celebs there, with handshakes, beers, backslaps, and pictures taken all round. They are heroes as well to many here, and we appreciate them as brothers.
chris, Phoenix, USA
How sad that a hotel would go to such lengths to deny a room to a soldier that puts his life on the line every day. Shame to the hotel, and I hope that they are boycotted into bankruptcy.
Tabitha, Kansas City, USA
"regrets any upset" is similar to "to anyone who was upset" meaning they do not know what this hero is upset about or more likely don't care. this employee should be fired, the management should be fired, the hotel should be fined and have its license revoked for discrimination. an apology is due.
brian miller, springfield, usa
I find this to be utterly disgusting. The very people who allow the Metro hotel to operate under free capitalism are being shunned from using their facilities!?
Andrew, Tal., USA
Commenting as an American - it is true, we respect and honor our military and are grateful for their service. We would give up our room or share it if we were to have seen that. And we will air this story on our net radio show - shame on the Metro Hotel and bravo for all who are speaking up.
melinda , merced, california, usa
In addition to contacting and boycotting the hotel, I would urge concerned persons to contact and boycott listing partners, such as travelocity. That would help focus the hotel's attention on the issue.
John, Fort Bragg,
Think I'll book a week in this hotel, and cancel at the last minute.
alan, lanark, uk
Simply make everyone aware of the story and they'll go bankrupt. Pathetic actions and a half-hearted attempt at reconciliation. Show how much they "care" by allowing any military home on leave free stay for a year. For the specific soldier lifetime free stays. Maybe-maybe, then, they have a chance.
Rick Schultz, Milford, OH, United States
its so sad to hear this.. may god bless u and ur family!!
rudy, los ebanos tx, usa
To "James" (claims UK soldiers are destructive partiers): Perhaps they drink to cope w/ the lack of respect they get from their fellow citizens they are sworn to protect & lay down their lives for. Perhaps it's time for the Brits to restore their soldiers' honor? Where are the UK's yellow ribbons?
Kim, NYC, USA
I thought this was a hotel in San Francisco. I thought that San Francisco was the only country in the civilized world that did this to men in uniform.
Lee, Las Vegas, United States
Please let us know what we can do to make sure that this Hotel chain knows how unhappy we are! This is so wrong! I am so grateful to our American Hero's and I am so sorry that Corporal Stringer had to experience such ignorance!
God Bless America and God Bless our soldiers!
B. Poston, Puyallup, U.S.A.
"Makin' mock of uniforms
That guard you while you sleep.
Is cheaper than them uniforms,
And they're starvation cheap."
--Rudyard Kipling--
Thomas Bates, Kansas City, USA
Holy cow! Why, I'd make it a point to never patronize a hotel chain in my lifetime if someone made this a policy! It's DISGRACEFUL!!!!
Debra Baldwin, Birmingham,
I wonder where the receptionist got the idea that members of the military were not welcome. If there was a written statement saying so, then the hotel itself should be fined heavily for it. In that case, the receptionist is a scape goat.
If the idea was the receptionist's, she should be sacked.
William Smith, Fall River, MA, USA
That's why we live here.
Rick, Los Angeles, USA
Everyone I know is outraged at this incident. Members of the British armed forces are well trained, professional, true friends of Americans in battle for a hundred years and they've more than proven their courage and honor. IF this hotel was in the US, I doubt the building would still be standing
Thomas, Santa Clara, USA
I hope that the family of corporal stringer reads this. SUE SUE SUE. This could ubble into a multi million dollar lawsuit. Its time that the people abusing our troops and suing for every minor infraction are put in court as defendants.
boib, georgetown,
How sad that a hotel would do such a thing. That soldier was fighting to protect the UK and its way of life so that establishments such as that hotel could stay open. Tell the soldier and his family to move here to the U.S. where they'd be welcomed with open arms.
Rob, West Chester, Ohio, USA
I can't believe that the hotel only issued a statement saying all were welcome and that the receptionist made a mistake. Metro hotel should be boycotted and soundly admonished for this. Thank you to our brave soldiers in both countries.
Jean, Swartz Creek, USA
Dear Times on Line:
Of course we have our own traitors and communists in this country, but at least they can't get with doing that despicalble act to one of our soldiers. This so-called hotel should be burned to the ground. It is very sad as to what has happened to Great Britain in Margaret T.
walter, missoula, usa
That is deplorable! The British Government should bring the hammer down on this hotel and whole company that owns them. I am ashamed they call themselves American Amusement! Your soldiers are Hero's and deserve to be treated like it. God Bless all of our soldiers!
martin kaldahl, missoula, montana
Greetings:
As a Vietnam Veteran, this rings through as an echo of the treatment thrown in our face as we returned home.
I find it very sad that our cousins on the British Isle are subjected to the same bigotry, more than thirty years later!
Lynn Riggs, Santa Fe, USA
I tell you truly, if this had happened in Houston, this hotel would not have a patron for a month...if EVER. Our military and yours are the kings of this world.
Phillip, Houston, USA
It just amazes me that some business's have such a SNOB attitude towards the very people that are sworn to protect them. This is disgraceful and the Metro Hotel should be fined or be forced to make a sincere public apology on the Tele. If this happened here there would be protesters demonstrating.
Mark, Orlando, USA
Mr.Stringer: you are a true hero and a good friend to your fallen comrade. Shame on Metro Hotel for denying you a room for the night. I am so sorry that you were inconvenienced for the night and with a broken arm too.
God keep you safe and return safely to your family.
sheila, Toronto, canada
Kipling wrote a poem about how the British have always treated their soldiers like, to be polite, Lepers.
It is sad to see that nothing has changed.

Thank you for your service to your country... and to humanity. It saddens me that a company with the word "american" in it is involved in this. You have my respect and gratitude.
Jim Phillips, Huntsville, AL, USA
Dear Corporal Tomos Stringer, your mother is right, in America you are a HERO, and make no mistake we honor your service. Metro needs to do more to smooth over such a hellacious PR error. God Bless Corporal Stringer, and his family.
Robin, Huntington Beach, USA
Treating soldiers as if they were, in effect, criminals as reprehensible. More so this person returning to bury a fallen brother.
I searched a US business index for this 'american amusements' company and was not able to locate them. With luck, let's hope we don't here from them in the future.
Rob, Chicago, USA
To this British soldier,
I would like to extend my heartfelt sadness that you were treated in such a manner. How low, how despicable. I realize that this is an isolated incident, but from what we have experienced here in the states, this kind of behavior from the Left hides just below the surface.
Chris, Tulsa, OK
my heart dropped whenever i read this. it was appaling and i'm not impressed with the apology from the company. as an american, we do love our soldiers and i want those in the UK to know that we love your soldiers, as well. i'm so grateful for their sacrifice and their courage. we love you guys.
s powell, ft worth, tx, usa
more and more the world seems undeserving of the freedom soldiers have fought and died to provide for us
Steve, Blanchard,
I've heard stories before that have made me ashamed of my country, I've seen things happen that made me ashamed of being British, but after reading about this, and a few of the comments from British people here, for the first time I feel this country is really worthless.
Alex, London, UK
This is a horrible event that took place and I hope this hotel is bought out and restaffed since those who did work there and knew of the ridiculous policy sat back and did nothing to stand up to do the right thing...and give that amazing soldier a place to rest his head. God Bless!
Sam, Austin, TX, USA
Jeers to Metro Hotel and its owners. Fire the desk clerk and give this true British hero a year's free lodging for him and his family.
Cheers to Corporal Tomos Stringer. On behalf of so many whose lives and safety you put your own life at risk, I salute you and thank you and your family.
Robin Howard, Warsaw, usa
It is a terrible way to treat people who put their lives on the line serving their country. It is typical of the left-wing, military-hating socialist/comunists that are all too common these days. Boycott the hotel and make sure they know the price they will pay for their policy.
Roger Bacon, Miami, USA
This hotel should have to do more than apologize. This story is absolutely sickening. Thank you to this soldier and the whole British and American Armies.
Kim Erdman, Pine Grove, USA
Metro should understand that word moves quickly and that businesses can be made or broken by that word! I pray every day for our Military Personel and our Allies safety!
I'm ashamed of you Metro.
Anne, Graham, USA
Send the hotel management to Afganistan till they understand what this soldiers been through.
Boycot this hotel chain
Adrian Impey, Hartlepool, UK
UK
As you can see the American People do care about British Soldiers. This is an embarrasment, If this company is U.S. Based, I will spread the word to friends and family and hopefully they will see the pain they have given to those Brave Souls (U.S, UK, Canadian etc).
K Lofton, Greensboro, NC, USA
I have been looking for any further information on this company because I want to make sure I NEVER support them in any way, however, so far everything I see about them suggests that they are a UK company and not Amreican owned, the American part is only in their name. Still looking though.
Steve, New Jersey, USA
As a young American sailor stationed at Holy Loch, Scotland in the early 1970's, I never experienced anything like the Cpl. Stringer incident. The Scots were very friendly and always made this Yank feel right at home. But that was Scotland. Maybe County Surrey should change its name to County Surly.
Steven Dill, Louisville, Kentucky, USA
I think everyone should boycott this hotel and others this company owns. I do not agree with what has happened in Iraq but all service personal have my full support, if they turned up at my private home they would find a hot cuppa, meal and a bed if needed.
God bless all our serving men and women.
James Vaughan, Parkes, Australia
Bet Obama Husein got a room, he is Europes real hero and will make the hotels in the USA also ban Military.
I am embarrased for everyone. The Hotel should have it's business licence yanked and closed by the authorities till a court date .. My heart and love goes to the hero soldier. We love you.
Barend Bendorf, Ojai, CA
"I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer, The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here..."
TOMMY - by Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936)
Alastair, Manchester,
As a business owner I have personally called all five area offices, instructing they are not to do any business with whomever are the owners of Metro Hotel.
Not trusting newsprint as to the Metro owners, we will verify and then boycott all their properties permanently.
Houghton Coleman, N York,
Having experienced the violence and destruction wreaked by soldiers out on a binge I sympathise with the Hotel's wish to protect itself from such behaviour. A broken wrist in a cast is not much of an inconvenience nor is a nights sleep in a car, especially for someone used to active service.
James Kirk, London,
I am disgusted that a soldier, a soul representing Queen & country and acting on behalf of our politicians, is refused at a 'Hotel'. Our men and women, out there defending our country's interest and our liberty, deserve better than to be thrown out of a 'Hotel' and forced to fend for themselves.
Lily, London, U.K
Imagine what would happen if the hotel had this same policy but instead of towards the armed forces it was directed at muslims or any other religous or ethnic minority, they would be prosecuted and rightly so.
Tony, High Wycombe, England
The fact of the matter is London is so short of hotel space that most people who share the sentiments expressed here won't be able to put their boycots into practice. In London, you could be offered a dog kernel for 70 pounds ($140) and take it. The hoteliers know it too!
Charan Muzaya, London, UK
This is plain old fashioned discriminiation. There are laws to protect people from this sort of thing, regardless of race, creed, color OR profession. Litigation would be the best way to teach a lesson to the offenders.
Joe, New York,
i don't know what american corp owns this hotel but england should ship them back to the united states and we will make them sleep in or parking lots . god save the queen and good bless america brothers in arms . from elliot osher in the usa
elliot, white plains, usa
Have to give them something as the Government of the US treats and uses them like toilet paper...
Leon, Bellaire, Antrim
This story is appaulling! The Metro Hotel needs to make public amends. Keep pressuring them to do right! They need to do something that honors their soldiers! I cannot imagine how he felt. Maybe their freedoms need to taken away so they can appreciate what has been sacrificed for them!
Ruth Sluder, Fairbanks, In, USA
The hotel's conduct has been reprehensible. The fact that this soldier was denied entrance as a matter of policy illustrates how morally bankrupt the hotel's management and staff are. I am also very ashamed that this is an American owned chain.
Ken , Killeen, USA
This is appallingly atrocious and disgusting. It seems like every week we get a story out of the UK of soldiers being disrespected and not appreciated. Even France seems to have more respect for its service members. After reading this, I really do fear for the future of Britain.
Seth, San Francisco, CA, USA
Outrageous! It is hard to believe that any business would refuse any member of the Armed Services from any country. As a wife and a sister of a service members I am disheartened by this. Uniformed men and women go through so much and to be treated with such disrespect is beyond me. Shame on them!
Mandy, San Diego, USA
There should never be a reason good enough for anyone to ever stay in that hotel again! God Bless Cpl. Stringer and all the rest in military service. We in the U.S. are proud to continue to call Great Britain a friend and very much appreciate their contribution in making this a safer world.
Marcus Schwab, Lake Havasu City, USA
Oh! the compassion of the left. What fine human beings they are.
Ron, Seattle , USA
An absolute outrage, these Guys and Girls are fighting in the worlds hell holes so we have the freedom of speech we enjoy!
The added indignity that this chap was to attend a colleagues funeral was bad enough but I have also heard similar stories when attending a nearby hospital for injured troops!
Dave Farmer, Broxbourne, England
Whether or not it's company's policy, it's their responsibility to train employees. Disrespect to the military should not be tolerated in any form. Understand this...without the people who have fought for freedom past or freedom present you, or we might have been speaking another language!
Robert (Retired Military), Rome, USA
Simon, I can tell you what is wrong with the UK, 15 plus years of Labour Party rule. The Labour Party and their very liberal followers have almost distroyed your once great country. We are having the same problem here in the US, except our Labour Party is call the Democrat party.
Shane, Florida, USA
A soldier of the queen. She should speak up. As regards comments about hired killers thank God that he or I do not have to rely on such cowardly people for our defence. With regard to it not being the hotel's policy the problem in this country is no one takes responsibility.
Lest We Forget
Rick, High Wycombe,
How in the world can this be "a simple mistake" by one lone receptionist? I say the pervasive environment of the hotel management filters down to the staff and there must be a negative bias against military persons with the ownership of this establishment.
How disapointing.
Rick, St. Louis, USA
it was a shame that the hotel employee didn't have the authority to set aside a policy that clearly was not adopted with this young hero in mind. The hotel should now turn this around by honoring the soldier, his fallen colleague and his family. God bless him, his comrades and Great Britain, ..
Allen Smythe, NYC, USA
I've heard that the City of San Fransisco refused the US Marines use of the Golden Gate Bridge to make a recruitment commercial earlier this year. That, and these other stories are enough to make any patriot flaming mad.
Roger Powell, Waco, TX, USA
Disgusting. I'm a vet who will never want to stay at this hotel
Larry, Tulsa, USA
As an American coming to England in October, I will NOT stay at the Metro Hotel or any hotel owned by American Amusements. Shame on the the hotel, the clerk, and the company for not honoring the military of any country but especially their OWN country. THANK YOU to all the soldiers of the world!
Kathy, San Juan Capistrano, USA
I'm an American and I've visited England before. I Loved the country and the people. Your people made me and my wife feel extremely welcome.
You can be certain I or my family will not be staying at this place next time we visit England.
Randy, Columbus, United States
I have to agree with the mother of this soldier. These guys need to be drummed out of business whether they are American or not!!! this kind of garbage has to end!
Laurel, Santa Rosa, USA
Absolutely shameful. They can open their doors to make MONEY because men and women like him that risk their lives for our freedom. This hotel should be BOYCOTTED forever. What a disgrace!
Al, Cushing, USA
Tell you what Laura, let's hope the duty receptionist who made a "mistake" got fired by the hotel management. This is an unforgivable error in judgement that caused the hotel a whole lot of trouble, and probably cost them a large amount of lost revenue. The Soldier should get a free week's stay.
PTParks, West End, USA
Cpl Stringer's mother is right; in the United States, most of us do treat soliders as heroes, and that goes for the soldiers of our allies as well. The treatment Cpl Stringer received is disgraceful, and I'm happy to see the support of the British and American public. God Bless the Soliders!
Mike F., Redmond, WA, USA
" The English they're a sorry lot "
allen, ny, usa
I would like to know if there is anything we can do to make sure this type of thing does not happen again. I don't know of a metro hotel around where I live, but I would sure like to be able to do something to express my distaste.
Allison, Eden Prairie, MN, USA
Perhaps the local licencing authorities should review the hotel's licences for. e.g drinks or whatever else it needs to stay in business. Who approved a policy that no service personnel should stay at the hotel ? That miserable individual should be "outed" !
david, Ligneyrac, France
If an American company owns this property, then I suggest that they determine whether such a company policy banning members of the armed forces exists for its hotel. If it does, then not only immediately apologize to this British hero and repeal the policy but, then, fire the policy's implementor!
Robert Infinger, Charleston, South Carolina, USA
What a shame. It may well, though, have been one thoughtless receptionist. As an American who flys business class pretty often, in the U.S., at least 50% of us give up our seats for coach flying soldiers. A small way to say "thank you". Try it or some kind act. It is appreciated..and deserved.
Tricia, Dallas, TX
As an american veteran of 40 years of military service, including Vietnam, Iraq, and the Horn of Africa. I am disgusted by the actions of this hotel and corporation I am also researching this company to keep from doing any business with them or their corporation. I hope thereis an investigation!
Mike, Jacksonville, USA
I am an American who will proudly pay for this man's hotel room anytime he is here in America. I am proud of his service for your country and your freedom. Men like this should be honored instead of vilafied.
Randy, Houston, TX, USA
It doesnt matter if it's the policy, it's wrong. You wouldnt ban musicians just b/c some bands can gt wild. Its disgusting what happened and karma will catch up. And no matter whether you support military action, he is putting his life on the line in service to his country.
Valerie, LON - NY, UK/ USA
Not only should this hero get a room, but it should be ay no cost ! Our heros on both sides of the pond deserve more. Had this person been Muslim, the government would have appologized to several nations by now. I bet you Sir Winston Churchill would have words for this ungrateful hotel Chamberlain!!
Terry Miller, Atlanta, USA
As the son of a Royal Navy Officer in WW2 and a former member of the United States Air Force (who had a tour in the UK), I am absolutely appalled, and astonished that a man who serves his country could ever be treated in such an infamous way.
William Kirk, Tallahassee, USA
Corp Stringer, From a father of an American Airman and an American ally, THANK YOU for your service to your country. Were you to find yourself in Northern California, you'd have my home to stay at as an honored guest. Rest assured sir, these people will NEVER hold a dollar that I gave them.
Paul M., Redding, CA, USA!
I think they should appologize on tv to the soldier and the armed services and make a hefty donation to hospital services for injured and handicapped soldiers recoperations! I don't think sueing is the right thing, unless they don't change there ways.Too many law suits already.Thank You Vets!
james , seattle, USA
This could only happen in the UK - what is wrong with us, and when did we stop being proud to be British? What a disgrace.
Simon, Oxford, UK
This is SHAMEFUL....do they not realize that because of this soldier's service they are allowed to operate? DEFINITELY BOYCOTT this HOTEL! I know you get random disregard for service members over here occasionally in certain parts of the country, mostly 99% of Americans do appreciate our soldiers.
Jane, Atlanta, GA, USA
I'm an American and I am disturbed by the practices of this hotel. This story has made its way to the news outlet here in the US and we are all calling for a boycott of this organization on this side of the pond.
I'm thankful for Corporal Tomos Stringer service.
mike, philadelphia , USA
What an outrage!!!!
This soldier, a true hero, should be compensated for his treatment by this hotel.
GOD bless him and his Country men for their service.
B Remusat, Orlando, FL, USA
Calm down you silly reactionaries. It turns out the duty receptionist made the mistake and it's not hotel policy.
I do wish you people would step back, wait and listen to what really happens and the causes before launching your vendettas/boycotts and "violence", JBarr.
Laura Roberts, London, UK
I would suggest that we all boycott this disgrace of a hotel.
Peter Thomson, Canterbury,
Weak minded liberals in the US try to do the same thing. Freedom is under fire everywhere, and when a young man offers his life for his country, it is time to stand up and honor him. I am so mad at the hotel that dishorored him I can't stand it. I appreciate our militaries. My own son is overseas.
Doug Williams, Oklahoma City, USA
Shut them down for a month and see f they chage their tune!
Larry, Gaither MD, USA
As an American Vetern I am appalled that this business is refusing a member of their armed forces a bed for the night. If the Metro is American owned, I as an American, apoligize to Britians Armed Forces and the People of the United Kingdom.
Vic Kingsley, Thousand Oaks, Ca, USA
This is what Obama and friends would have us turn to if it is up to them. It is a liberal region and this is how liberals view the world regardless of there location. I can not believe that a hotel would refuse to put up an injured soldier that is looking to get some rest while on leave.
ERIC, Sioux City, UNITED STATES
I can understand why they ban them. Have you seen the way Soldiers behave in Hotels?
Getting drunk, picking fights, I can understand.
Clive Rosenberg, London,
I suggest a ban on Metro hotels. I for one will never use it.
The quicker they go out of business the better
Paul, Bristol, UK
please follow up on this story and how we can show our support to this soldier who has sacrificed so much. I also echo what A. Strickland said as well.
SB, USA
Sandra, Lees Summit,
Cpl Stringer is a true hero & should be treated as such. Mr Hindenburg's comment is untrue. In the US, the Hotel in question would be out of business within a month. Scratch that.... it wouldn't happen in the US. In the US only the leftist loons, would do such a terrible thing to a hero. Thanks Cpl
Dale Williamson, Peoria, IL, USA
Hmmm...as an ex-British soldier, albeit of vintage years, it's quite common in the Surrey/Hants/Berks area to find discrimination against the humble squaddy. Why? Well after years of drink fuelled trouble and fights with civilians over girls it's the easiest solution. Not right, but understandable.
Pu Li, Guangxi, PRC
What a disgusting display. I'm doing some internet research to find out what other businesses those people own so that I can make sure they never get a penny of my money.
Eric, Park City, USA
I'm now on a mission to visit as many review sites as possible.
Phill, The Wirral, England
You must teach this hotel a lesson. The only thing they will understand is a huge hit in their revenue.
Boycott the hotel and put them out of business once an for all.
john, boston, USA
Very classy. Well done to the Times for publishing the details of the hotel.
Cronan, London, UK
Giving a room to a hired killer, possibly with a gun in his possession? I can understand their reluctance!
Gareth, Brighton, UK
I say shut the entire motel chain down for the disgraceful way they treated a member of our Armed Forces who himself was wounded in the service of his country so that idiots like this can discriminate against our troops in uniform.
No questions, just make the owner sleep in his/her car.
Ben from CO, longmont, USA
Has there been no official explanation from the hotel? I'm wondering if this was not the work of one disgruntled employee. It doesn't make business sense.
Former US Marine
Will S, Calabasas, CA, USA
When terrorist get around to attacking this hotel perhaps the soliders should just stay away also. Let them defend themselves.
Stormey, Baltimore, USA
i fly quire often in the US and on almost all flights first class passengers give their seats to members of the military.when are the good people of the UK going to stand up and say enough is enough.
Maury Gibson, EL PASO, USA
As an American soldier who has worked with the British, I'm outraged. I have seen nothing but honor and valor from the Brits. I'd serve beside them at a moments notice.
I cannot believe that a Hotel would discriminate based on a profession... Especially a job that is so noble.
Carlton, Jacksonville Beach, USA
Socialism has made Britain soft and uncaring.
Rudy, Baton Rouge,
From my perspective, your country is totally lost. You have given up your sovereignty to foreigners and politically correct advocates. Soon, you will lose control of your country to Islamic interests. I see no courage among your politicians since Maggie.
J. P. Stakun, Zephyrhills, USA
Absolutely disgraceful..again we treat the Armed Service appallingly. I for one will now boycott this chain of hotels and I hope everybody will do the same. My son, in the Armed Forces went to America and he was treated like royalty. They know how to look after their own. SHAMEFUL.
kirk, Rotherham, UK
We need to helpp this soldier sue this Hotel, if this is not discrimination than what is???????????? Support and respect our troops.
william rivas, los angeles, u.s of a
I hope the company that owns the hotel is not American. Please publish what else this company owns so that I can boycott it here in the states.
Andy Strickland, Memphis, USA
Good Caption for that photo!
JT, Sheffield, UK
this is an outrage, if this is not discrimination than what is?
support and respect out troops...
william rivas, los angeles, u.s of a
Outrageous!! Is this how the British treat their heroes??? Come to the States, mate. I run a hotel in Myrtle Bech,SC, and I`ll give you a room, and won`t charge you a dime for it!
D. Risner, Myrtle Beach, USA
No. In America they propagandize about soldiers being treated like heroes. Many soldiers who return still do not get proper medical and mental health treatments. The glorification of a soldier's service is only made in conventions (the most recent being the Republican convention yesterday).
Joseph Hindenburg, waltham, USA
This is disgusting and sad. Who treats wounded soldiers, or any soldiers fighting for freedom, in this vile manner? I'm outraged and I don't even live there! Mr. Stringer, Thank you for your service.
From a friend across the pond.
Charles, Plano, Tx, USA
Um, first rule of journalism, get both sides of the story. Has anyone checked with the hotel to confirm this was actually their policy?
This sounds like an absurd beat-up.
Dale, Perth, Australia
As a twenty year American veteran three years of which were served in London I find this type of behavior unbeleviable. British troops have fought and died next to Americans for close to twenty years and to have one of them treated in this manner in their own country is repugnent to the extreme.
RHBrauer, Warner Robins , usa
The Metro may be facing it's Waterloo.
Peter, London,
He's absolutely right. Here in the USA no soldier would ever be discriminated against in this fashion. If this is allowed to stand is is an embarrasing indictment of the country's culture and people as a whole.
Kevin, Omaha, USA
As an american but, also as a military veteran I am ashamed that an american owned company would do this. I will be sending a comment to their home office on this subject
terry riley, kennett, mo, US
As an American, that hotel that refused
service to this brave soldier will most
definitely NOT get my business, now or ever!
karl anglin, los angeles, United States
I would advocate violence as a thinking man's response to this situation.
JBarr, Dallas Texas, USA!
