J K Rowling, the Harry Potter author, has made a £1m donation to the Labour Party. The gift was announced by the party as it began its annual conference in Manchester today.
“I would like to thank J K Rowling for making this generous donation and for helping us in our work to make Britain a fairer and stronger country," said Ray Collins, Labour Party General Secretary.
Ms Rowling, whose fortune stands at £560 million in the Sunday Times Rich List, is a personal friend of the Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah.
But the author said in a statement her donation was chiefly influenced by Labour's work on child poverty and Conservative Party plans to ease the tax burden on married couples. Ms Rowling famously wrote her first Harry Potter books while a struggling single mother.
She said: “I believe that poor and vulnerable families will fare much better under the Labour Party than they would under a Cameron-led Conservative Party."
The donation will come as a big fillip to the Labour party and its beleaguered leader Mr Brown at the start of the conferenmce. It's debts are now nearly £18m. But it is understood Ms Rowling has indicated she does not want her donation to be used simply to reduce that sum.
Ms Rowling said in her statement: “Gordon Brown has consistently prioritised and introduced measures that will save as many children as possible from a life lacking in opportunity or choice. The Labour government has reversed the long-term trend in child poverty, and is one of the leading EU countries in combating child poverty.
“David Cameron’s promise of tax perks for the married, on the other hand, is reminiscent of the Conservative government I experienced as a lone parent. It sends the message that the Conservatives still believe a childless, dual-income, but married couple is more deserving of a financial pat on the head than those struggling, as I once was, to keep their families afloat in difficult times.”
Mr Brown said later: “I am delighted that J K Rowling, who is one of the world’s greatest ever authors, has made such a generous donation."
The announcement of the donation was the second boost for the conference after David Miliband, seen by many as Mr Brown's main rival for the Labour leadership, issued a call for party unity.

Rowlings is supporting a party which wants to increase poisonous NO2 levels in W London. This is a serious health risk for all the children and adults that live near Heathrow.
She should give her money to charity instead of seeking self promotional headlines.
Andy H, Twickenham,
Is that how much it costs to buy a title???
From these parasites???
Oh dear..
Better off giving it to Save the children pet..
Eric, newcastle, uk
J Rowling..What a waste of your money.
If you really cared about poverty you should have given your money to one of the many more deserving charities that deal with poverty first hand.
Instead you have given to a wasteful labour party/government.
Gareth Williams, Swansea, UK
How sweet! One purveyor of fantasy bails out another.
Mike, Huntingdon,
She can pump in as much as she likes but at the end of the day. Its to late to bring the voters back.
In 1997 Labour came to power shouting from the roof tops that the Tories had lost because they had not listened and lost touch with the voters.
Labour have made the same fundamental mistake.
Thompson, chorley,
She's overrated anyway. Terry Pratchett's a million times better than she is. A million pounds to Labour is a complete waste of money, try a charity. Oops, I forgot, Labour's in need of some charity!
Matt Roberts, Dudley,
What she should have been saying is that you should keep it in your pants until you can afford to support any child before you breed. For Gordy to say she is "one of the greatest ever authors" show that he, as ever, is a poor judge. She is like Jeffrey Archer a good storyteller but no more.
Nigel Gronvy, London,
Typical Nu Labourite - if she is so keen on equality etc. why does she send her children to private school. Her elder daughter went to one of the best state primaries in Edinburgh but when she started to make money that was not good enough for her.
Henry Topfer, Auchterarder,
£1 million to NuLiebor or to our soldiers maimed in Iraq/Afghanistan like money raised at Twickenham yesterday? The latter have been really hard done by by this shameful 'government;, unlike unmarried mothers.
What planet does JKR live on?
Peter Grimes, London , England
One flash of inspiration in creating a children's book does not make her a great author, neither does it make her a great judge of character or a wise spender of money. If she ever writes another successful book that has nothing to do with harry pot head I may well change my mind.
Graeme , warrington,
Why is this an opportunity to pick on single parents. Who says anti social teenagers are the products of single parents, I came from a broken home, my mother was a teacher and lecturer, I was a single parent for a time, my daughter always excelled and is a lovely teenager.
S. Swallow, london, uk
My daughter's step mother brought her teenage son up alone (from birth) on benefits and he is so well brought up. Then you see he has had his mum, not been farmed out endlessly, now she is in a different place and life has moved on. He is a amashing teenager who is a delight.
S. Swallow, london, uk
That's the last time I buy a Harry Potter book! I'm not subbing that bunch of morons at the Labour Party. If she wants to help children, she should have given the money to children's hospitals, play groups, care homes or needy individuals. It will now simply disappear, like Harry, into thin air!
Fran , New Forest, UK
This lady is seriously deluded. As a socialist I despair at this blatant disfigurement of truth. Under Blair and Brown British children have been betrayed in a prolonged manner. Using this governments own figures, children livinng in absolute and abjet poverty have grown even since the last budjet.
John Eadie MacGregor, Doncaster, South Yorks
With so many publishers turning down her first novel, one has to question whether she now has a ghost writer. I personally think her writing is trash, or possibly worse.
Bernard Lawson, London, England.
I'm saddened that JKR gave £1,000,000 to a bunch of thieving useless traitors and wasters. I can understand her wish to help but her judgement is way off because it is clear NuLabour will soon be anihilated at the polls. Nothing can help them. They have totally lost the trust of the British people
Bob, IOW, UK
If she believes she is a real friend of Brown, then she's a fool. Politicians like Brown walk over people to get where they are and use the rich and famous to further their ends. Another champagne socialist, which the rest of us can not afford.
chris, Woodbridge, England
I'm so pleased JK Rowling has done this. How do the Labour haters explain this one. Why would a wealthy person donate to Labour if they are so useless and woeful? Maybe, unlike most of you, she isn't gullible enough to be taken in by Compassionate Cameron's car salesman spin and empty promises.
A Thomas, Lanchester,
'Worlds greatest ever authors'
Another clue as to Browns complete lack of reality.
I certainly wont be buying this awful womans books so she can forward the cause of the single parenting agenda.
antony Graham, southport, England
Of course J K Rowling is both a friend of the Browns, and a master of fantasy.
Kevin, Leeds,
So, is Harry Potter Scottish, then?
Terry, Ankara,
Perhaps Dumbledore will be making an appearence at the conference.
johnny, London, GB
so a strategic gift that is in fact a slap for the Conservatives because she still bears a grudge from her earlier relationship break-down?
Christopher Paul, High Wycombe, England
If Gordon Brown thinks that JKR is one of the world's greatest ever authors it is pretty damning evidence of his lack of judgement. Luckiest or richest might apply but greatest - never.
Andrew Wilson, Bristol,
Please use the money to call a snap election so we can get rid of the Scottish mafia. Rather disappointed in Rowling, thinking Marriage is such a bad thing. Pathetic really.
Ian, Tokyo, Japan
Isn't it the breakdown of the family unit that has led to some of the social malaise affecting the UK today?
Mayowa, London,
She would have got better value from the money if she had donated directly to one of the small childrens charities or one of the many good causes.
David, Runcorn, UK
I bet this is tax deductible.
Tom Wright, Reigate,
I hope this is AFTER TAX!! One million out of her bank account, and not tax-deductable.
Millie Alfred, Ronda, Spain
"One of the world's greatest ever authors" - more evidence that Brown's judgement is fundamentally flawed. What he should have said was, "One of the world's richest ever authors." There's a difference between "rich" and "great" - although New Labour doesn't seem to appreciate that
Ian, London, UK
we have 'child poverty' because Mr Brown has done nothing except increase taxation
Mike, Sole Street, England
Rowling is trying to recast the mistake of single parenthood into a virtue and a' yooman rite' - nice message for a young audience JK - stick to writing fantasy please, we don't need a neo-liberal greed driven sermon - you and your vast wealth are part of the problem not part of the solution.
Winston Smith, Edinburgh, UK
i dont like this woman, i congratulate her on her success with her books, but she seems stuborn about her time being a single mother. Why shouldn't married couples have tax reductions? we get ripped off in this country full stop and need all the help we can get!
Alan, Surrey,
Surely she could have helped children without interfering in the democratic process. Maybe she is not affected by government incompetance but most people cannot afford more idiocy. Rowling needs to ask if eating the seedcorn is very clever? A coherent long term plan would be better.
JohnW, Oldham,
You! like the offensive party you support and other affiliated millionaires and billionaires are out of touch. Your ilk have hoovered up vast and inappropriate amounts of cash, now there is none left for the rest of us, tread carefully when virtue becomes vice and you march to the old tune.
Winston Smith, Edinburgh, UK
Fool! The problem with this country is that there are two many single parent who cannot control their offspring who join gangs because the feel alienated. At least when there are 2 parents the problem is shared and halved. Brown government have taken more disposable income & squandered it
steve tea, manchester, cheshire
If I wanted to help children I would have given the million pounds to a childrens charity. But with £560,000,000 in the bank, if I really wanted to help children, I would give £50,000,000 or even £100,000,000. Come of it JK it`s nothing to do with helping children, you`re just sucking up.
C. G.
Cliff Gale, Hull, England.,
I was a single (divorced) parent who never received a penny from the government but managed to work full time, found a day nursery for my child and also another single parent to share the rented apartment so we could pay the rent.
JK Rowling obviously had never heard of doing for oneself!
Chips Westwood, Sarlat La Caneda, France
She clearly lives in a fantasy world
Peter, London,
What a silly woman. Obviously living in la-la land... I definitely won't be spending any money on her books.
Debby, London,
Since child poverty is defined by the government as RELATIVE they can happily claim success while at the very same time driving us all into ABSOLUTE poverty.
Steve Bush, Cirencester, UK
Labour policies on poverty encourage benefit dependency and penalise those who try to improve their situation without recourse to the state. Conservative policy is to break this dependance on the state and give people back control of their lives.
Peter, London,
Who is this "Baroness Hogwarts" ?.... ooops.......that is next year....silly me.
Tony, Derby, UK
What a fool. She is helping support the party that has done more to destroy our way of life as possible. Must be nice living in ivory towers, away from the commoners.
Adnerson, Leicester,
It's just a sign that the wonderful but one trick pony JK has let the adulation of the world go to her head. It's a shame but at she finished the books before realising that she could change then world.
Eleanor, London,
Going by the previous comments only five percent seem to approve of JK's actions so I doubt it will have much of an effect other than keeping Brown and company out of the bankruptcy courts before the next election.
Give it up Gordon. They are all hinting you're a looney. Staying is just proof.
Dugald MacMillan, Livingston, UK
Harry or JK who Gordon Brown rewards with the inevitable knighthood? Harry surely then he could embark on a completely new series of adventures. (Harry, not Gordon!)
He could invent outlandish plots to take away all the nasty banker's mistakes and bury them deep in a world of make believe.
A.M.Williams, Stafford,
More money in the Nulabour expenses trough?
J.K. would have been better in donating this amount to charity. She certainly would have been more respected by the public, more so by the people who cough up their hard earned dough to buy her books.
I suppose a peerage is in the pipeline now.
Paul , Coventry, England
Labour should have really targeted people in real need.
What did they do? Gave benefits to anyone that could say "Incapacity Benefit" I'm not entitled to benefit but I'm not a liar.
Its given to druggies, alcoholics, malingerers etc..
Billions are being wasted, its a disgraceful waste of tax.
Graham, St. Albans, uk
As with Nick Clegg, why not ask her what the weekly pension is for a (ex government staff excluded) married couple compared to the benefits received by a non working single mother of three children
Tom Mein, Chorafakia, Crete
I wouldn't be surprised if the Labour party decided to celebrate - by spending the whole lot on a really good firework display!
peterj, Aberdeen, UK
Who made her judge? Wake up Ms Rowling just because you are rich do not belittle the rest. For the record I am a Single parent and have NEVER supported Labour, I work hard & no I am not on benefits! Labour have ruined this country if I could leave I would.
Sharon, Manchester, UK
typical ignorant celebrity.
why should married people automatically pay more tax? is it somehow morally superior to raise a kid on your on? are kids better off without a dad?
im glad im not a harry potter fan and have not by proxy stuffed money into the stupid socialists hands.
will, grimsby, uk
Dame JK: why not simply offer to pay lots more tax on your own personal wealth? Ridiculous though that would be, it still makes more sense than pouring £1 million into a black hole.
Neil, Galloway, Scotland
She doesn`t know what it`s like to be hard up ,at least she got family allowance. When my son was born, I didn`t.
This is politics JK, not child welfare. If you really wanted to make a difference you would have given it to a childrens charity. And with £560,000,000, that`s two weeks interest.
Wow!
Cliff Gale, Hull, England.,
I agree with Rowling's comments on the Tories there, but i still feel giving money to the Labour Party is about as useful as a car without an engine. Oh and for the record i bloody dispise Harry Potter.
Martin, Ipswich, UK
She's rich enough to be a Socialist now !
John N, Warminster, UK
I reckon £1 million in JK's life is about a £1 in ours. She probably pays her accountant that to help her stop paying tax.
Helena , Dunfermline, Scotland
I am sure the Harry Potter series will light my fire throughout this winter.
If Ms Rowling wants to aid child poverty I can not think of a more ineffiecient method of doing so than donating to the next opposition party. She shows little intelligence in her decisions.
Edwin, Bucharest,
I agree with her. Labours' policies towards single parents helped my mother and family find our feet and gave us a better standard of living. Under the Tories, we got nothing. They seem to think all single parents are scroungers. I would never go as far as donations to the party however.
Sarah , Belfast, Northern Ireland ,
I'm surprised she was able to pick a side, when neither Labour nor Tory is prepared to say boo to a Europe where the prevailing orthodoxy has it that the way to end poverty is to give huge handouts to the landed gentry, small ones to working farmers, and to dump products on the developing world.
Tim, Shanghai, China
Rowling revealed her 'liberal' sympathies when she declared Dumbledore to be 'gay'. What a manipulative statement and so potentially damaging to children who read her books. Now she wishes to assist New Labour's continuing undermining of the traditional heterosexual family. Shame on her!
John, Cardiff, Wales, UK
Who will get custody of Harry while she is in the phychiatric home?
David Allen, Marietta, USA
I'm surprised there wasn't a hammer and sickle flying from Hogwarts now.
Jack, Fareham, UK
Ms Rowling's donation to the Labour party adds further weight to the argument that so far in her in career she's only had one good idea.
Peter, bath,
Shame, one of these american authors can't do the same here.
James McCullough, Manhattan, New York, United States of America
Arise Lady Rowling! Oh I forgot you're not supposed to give away titles as reward for political donations - silly me.
John, Aylesbury, England
As much use as a bucket on the Titanic
Phill , The Wirral, England
I hate Champagne Socialists. The line from Pink Floyd's Money sums them up perfectly: "Share it fairly, but don't take a slice of my pie".
Ms Rowling may well have struggled as a single mother but that does not make her a saint. I'm proud of the fact that I support a wife and three happy children.
Tony, Stowmarket, Suffolk
This government have squandered the countries financial reserves, giving them more to play with will not make any difference to child poverty. Why not give direct to Dr.Barnardo's to make a real difference, then write another comic and stay out of real world politics.
Timothy Aitken, Bedford,
Both Labour and Tories operate in the interests of the rich, I would have thought the massive increase in the wealth gap over the past 20 odd years would have proved that point?
Owen, London, UK
I suppose if I had a million to waste this is more fun then setting light to it,or is it? This seems a little like trying to raise the titanic to see if you could fix the hole, if there were to be a general election tomorrow Labour would be confined to the opposition benches for the next 10 years!
Dave Farmer, Broxbourne, England
Laurie, of London Labour is not the party for fairness and equality of opportunity. They tax middle england hard to pay for the so called child poverty in this country. New borns are given £250 at birth, this should be scrapped.
F. Simpson, Leics,
Arise Dame JK Rowling!
John, London,
"Mr Brown said later: I am delighted that J K Rowling, who is one of the worlds greatest ever authors, has made such a generous donation."
Is that a joke! Selling shed loads of books doesn't make her a great author only a popular one. I think Calamity Brown just lost the literate vote.
Phillip Brown, Westbury, Wiltshire
Is Labour now a charity?! She could have given the money straight to some really needy people in the UK! People whose lives have been destroyed by Labour, can't get jobs, can't get healthcare, can't afford to rent let alone buy a home, can't pay the bills. Hasn't she noticed these people in the UK?
LJ Jackson, Reading, England
I'm glad that I have not bought any of her books. I already pay enough stealth taxes under these villains.
keith, Beziers, France
Putting political differences aside there is a wealth of references from the UN, to the IMF, World Bank, The EU, etc that have all over the last few years noted that New Labour have in fact put back the tide of child welfare improvement. The social divide is wider now than during the Victorian Era.
Paulo, London,
There's a lot someone with £560 Million could do to help eradicate child poverty, her donation will do nothing towards that aim.I'm a single, white working male who earns just over the levels to get any benefits,I just pay more tax and had my pension raided to pay for other peoples, fairness?
Dave, Plymouth,
Appropriate really, as Jk just like Nulabour lives mostly in the realms of fantasy.
steve , swansea, UK
One of my child's fears when young was that they would be like their school friends, Mum and Dad living apart. Children born to married parents with a good family life who DO NOT get everything they want have a much better chance of NOT living in poverty. Stop denigrating marriage and commitment.
Mrs S Warburton, Burnham, England
It doesn't surprise me in the least to discover Ms Rowling and Gordon are friends. After all, they both spend their working lives in a fantasy world. As for the donation; one would think the 1 million pounds would be better targeted at a charity than the Labour party debts.
Jonathan, Oxfordshire, England
If benefits had been different in Thatchers day, would JKR still have written HP, and been where she is today?
One of the morals in HP is that it may be hard to tell to tell what people's motives are. Snape is portrayed as wicked. But, right at the end, we see what he did was for Harry's own good.
John, Coventry,
Why didn't she give it to a children's charity if she is so concerned about child poverty? - blatant electioneering.
tone, cambridge,
I think that JK is right. Although I recognise that labour bashing is currently in fashion, I think that they are still the only party committed to fairness and equality of opportunity.
Laurie, London,
JK Rowling is of course able to give any number of her millions to anybody, but she must be suffering from delusions if she honestly thinks the population, and children in particular are better off now than they were before Labour came to power. Where has she been? Of yes, the ivory tower.
David, Hemel Hempstead, UK
"One of the world's greatest authors" - more evidence that Brown's judgement is fundamentally flawed. What he should have said was, "One of the world's richest authors." There's a difference between "rich" and "great" - although on past behaviour New Labour doesn't seem to appreciate that.
Ian, London, UK
She has just bought her peerage!
Bob, London,
It's a shame shes got nothing better to do with her money.
Robert, Hull, UK
How have the lives of poor & vunerable families improved under Labour? They create overly-complex & inefficiently managed programmes & lottery money is being diverted to the olympics. Under Labour, the consultants who create or administer these programs are better off not the intended recipients.
David, London,
I tackled my Conservative councillor at this year's local elections about C's still furthering such discrimmination against single parents AND their children. He pretended not to know anything about the proposals, took my number, but never rang back. Dishonest, gutless amd contemptuous. Take note.
Julie, London, UK
J K Rowling your clueless, anything that encourages the family unit is a blessing, one of the main reasons the fabric of society is unravelling is because of the systematic assault of the family.
Roger , Epping,
Well at least Browns got a job to go to, in 2010, as her butler.
ronnie, bucks, UK
I knew she wrote fantasy, but I did'nt know she believed in it.
Robert, Derby, UK
only the very rich can afford this govt. It is alright for her she can afford the taxation, actually she could afford healy's 98% tax regime. The rest of us however cannot. She would have been better giving to people who really need it insteadof a political party.
karl, toronto,
|She is not one of the worlds greatest authors, perhaps one of the worlds most popular, but all she has proven by her gift is that she is not very bright.
Steven Katirai, newcastle Upon tyne,
What is wrong these days with being married, or hetrosexual, or male, or white?
By all means help those that need help, but also help married couples stay together - why persecute them for having a life that is 'working'.
Simon, York, England
Either she's under the imperious curse or Warner Brothers can forget the last two flms.
Seriously Jo - you've got this wrong. Gordons putting more and more people INTO poverty.
James, Glasgow,
