Sea eagles used to be common in Britain, but they were driven out by farmers, the last native sea eagle being shot on Skye in 1918.
Their reintroduction began in 1975, when four Norwegian sea eaglets were released on Rum. Over the following years a further 82 were set free, but it was not until 1985 that a pair managed to breed. Since then it has been a steady success story, with about 42 pairs nesting along the West Coast.
The East Coast of Scotland, remains a challenge. Last year 15 Norwegian eaglets were released in Fife, followed by 15 more last month. At the same time, complaints by farmers about eagles taking their lambs and chickens have increased. Hard evidence is difficult to find. Sea eagles mainly eat fish and other sea birds. They sometimes eat lambs, but usually as carrion.
Although Scottish National Heritage, the Forestry Commission and the RSPB believe the threat to lambs is small, they have promised to listen to farmers. They hope, however, that the sea eagle will become as revered in Scotland as the bald eagle is in America.
