The Armed Forces laid on a flypast and parade to say thank you to the people of the Wiltshire market town Wootton Bassett for honouring fallen Service personnel. Since April 2007 they have lined the streets more than 100 times as funeral cortèges have driven solemnly from nearby RAF Lyneham, where the bodies of Servicemen and women are repatriated from Afghanistan or Iraq. General Sir Richard Dannatt, Chief of the General Staff, wrote in a letter: “It is the things that cost nothing that are the most important – a friendly greeting in the street, a prayer in church. But the gestures shown by the people of Wootton Bassett surpass these at every level.”

I am proud to say that I live in Wootton Bassett and I have attended several of the repatriations. I cannot begin to describe how moved I have felt at each one and my heart goes out to the relatives of the repatriated servicemen. I also attended yesterday's parade and it was a sight to behold.
Helen, Wootton Bassett,
What fantastic people.
As the parent of a serving airman I can only say thank you which goes nowhere near portraying my profound gratitude.
Paul, Brighton,
our soldiers and airmen and sailors deserve all they get well done maybe we should all take a leaf
deborah ruffell, croydon,
Some said the battle for Europe was unwinnable in World War Two considering the odds stacked against the allied forces and yet the forces of good emerged victorious. The reason for this was a common understanding that free choice must prevail over the forces of Totalitarianism. Wake up France!
James Alexander Johns, Plymouth, England
Well done to the people of Wooton Bassett, people need to remember that these are British service men and women, shame that this attitude is not carried throughout this country.
We should always be proud of OUR BOYS/GIRLS in uniform, they are the best in the world, they need our support....
Andy Hill, Bognor Regis, England
Having not grown up in Bassett it is now the place I am very proud to call my home, so when someone comes out with a callous comment (Stewart) it angers me. I have been to many of the repatriation ceremonies, and not because there is 'nothing else to do' have some respect please.
Gill, Wootton Bassett, UK
Stewart in NZ, what a cynical comment. Don't know what New Zealand did to deserve you, but they are welcome to you. What the good people of Wooton Bassett are doing is most heart warming.
Rob, West Midlands,
No matter what your attitude to the Forces. They cannot pick the wars they fight. It is the fist of any Government. When I look around at some of the youths today hanging round on street corners, causing trouble, drunkeness and ignorance. It's times like this it makes me feel proud to be British.
kirk, Rotherham, UK
Wooton Bassett says thanks 100 times compared with government ministers who have never said thanks. Typical.
Matt, Henley,
The Armed Forces perform a job which puts their lives at grave risk. We should be proud of their commitment to defend our country rather than tarnishing them with the same brush as the politicians who decide where to deploy them. Good show Wootton Bassett!
Khaled, London,
Every so often, something happens in this country which makes me proud to be British, An act which rises above the realms of the selfish majority. Thank you to Wooton Bassett for keeping that tiny flicker of hope going.
Chris, Rochdale, UK
Not only countries Bob, also a government.
Albert Hall, kettering,
I used to live in Wooton Bassett. To be honest there's not much else to do there so a parade through the town would be a good day out.
stewart, Nelson, New Zealand
Wootton Bassett are to be congratualed for their gesture. It;s just a pity they have to do this for a war that is unwinnable and a gross waste of our men and women in the armed forces for countries that don't give a damm.
Bob Crichton, Pnaissieres, France
