Archbishop tells US Anglicans to repent

A LEADING African primate last night became the first conservative evangelical to break ranks over the Windsor report, published on Monday in an attempt to heal divisions in the Anglican Church over homosexuality.

The Archbishop of Nigeria, Dr Peter Akinola, condemned the report as patronising, for failing to demand “heartfelt repentance” from the Anglican churches in Canada and America over same-sex blessings and the consecration of an openly gay bishop, Gene Robinson, in the United States.

Dr Akinola said that these provinces had pushed the wider communion “to the breaking point”. He added: “It is surprising that the primary recommendation of the report is ‘greater sensitivity’ instead of heartfelt repentance.” His statement makes clear the depth of division in the Anglican Church.

Dr Akinola visited the US this month to explore the possibility of serving as an alternative bishop to disaffected Episcopalians.
