Prince William and Prince Harry roared off on the first stage of a 1,000-mile motorcycle trek across southern Africa yesterday – and immediately rode into controversy.
Despite admitting that the eight-day off-road trip would be an “adventure”, the princes denied that it was a rich boys’ jolly. They are part of a group of 80 riders who are raising £300,000 for children’s charities.
Harry, 24, said: “It’s not just a bimble across the countryside, that’s for sure. It’s going to be very challenging and we’re expecting to fall off many a time.” William, 26, added: “It’s a mixture of adventure and charity – the key being, the money raised goes to three brilliant charities.”
Riding Honda CRF 230cc motocross bikes, the princes will follow goat tracks from Port Edward, in KwaZulu-Natal, which they left yesterday, to Port Elizabeth. The riders aim to raise money for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, Unicef and Sentebale, a charity founded by Prince Harry that helps Aids orphans in Lesotho.
Friends of the princes are riding too, and their royal protection officers will also be among the party.
